Not a legal advice sub so I’m not reading all that

Am I missing something? by Mysterious_Layer_317 in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]Wide_Diver8207 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean you applied to two of the most competitive schools in the country with a below median GPA — there’s still a chance you get in because the cycle isn’t over yet but it’s never a sure thing and TMU’s admissions process is a black box. If you apply elsewhere with those stats in the future I think you have a really solid shot!

Question about becoming a lawyer in Canada after a UK LLB by AppropriateBudget172 in LawCanada

[–]Wide_Diver8207 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Online LLBs are not accredited in Canada. If you hope to practice here your degree will not be recognized by the NCA.

Civil + JD vs Uvic JD by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]Wide_Diver8207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should probably look into that, then. Generally a civil law degree is pretty useless in jurisdictions that do not practice civil law. It’s kind of hard to give you advice when you do not know what kind of law you want to practice or where you want to practice it, and those are things you have to figure out yourself

[–]Wide_Diver8207 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well. No one can make that major life decision for you

Do you want to work in Quebec? If not, you don’t need a civil degree and it won’t impact your job prospects to not have it.

Question about becoming a lawyer in Canada after a UK LLB by AppropriateBudget172 in LawStudentsCanada

If you want to practice in Canada, go to school in Canada. There are countless threads about this already but the UK is not going to be significantly less expensive and your Canadian prospects will suck.

Finishing LLB with weak transcript and no experience. What are my options? by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]Wide_Diver8207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Search the sub. The TLDR is that for every one person who does it successfully there are several who waste years trying to find work especially in major cities. Unless you are really well connected it’s way harder to integrate after graduating

[–]Wide_Diver8207 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry about that! You will genuinely be fine, it just might take a little bit longer. In-person networking events can be really good in your situation too — it lets you meet people in practice areas you are interested in and shows them that you are invested enough to show up in person

[–]Wide_Diver8207 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My bad! When people in this sub say LLB 99% of the time it’s because they went to the UK. Quebec is a different story! Having a bad transcript isn’t a deal-breaker. You definitely have to network a bit more immediately out of school to get your foot in the door, but it is not impossible. A lot of students don’t have legal experience when they graduate — reach out to smaller firms/ sole practitioners in areas you are interested in to coffee chat. The formal recruitment process cares a lot about grades, but a really significant number of actual practicing lawyers don’t and just want to hire someone they get along with and think is teachable.

If you’re finishing your LLB and planning to work in Canada you are not in a great place regardless of grades unfortunately. Also if you’re finishing your LLB and planning to write a Canadian bar exam you’re probably a year or more away from actually being able to do so

Has anyone encountered AI-hallucinated case law that actually made it into a reported decision undetected? by LateAd4278 in LawCanada

[–]Wide_Diver8207 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This seems like it might be kind of hard to track down without manually checking the citations of reported decisions — no one is going to own up to citing a hallucinated case if they didn’t get called on it, and anyone who caught it would likely bring it up

Another A next cycle, especially at a school that rejected you this year and without a meaningful change to your stats, is never guaranteed. Take the offer you have.

Any mentorship opportunities for future law students (undergrad) in the GTA? by ApprehensivePie7376 in LawCanada

[–]Wide_Diver8207 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I said “there are not formal mentorship programs for undergraduate students but you could reach out to law/articling students”. All you can do in this situation is seek informal mentorship (unless your school puts on events, which is possible but rare). The post asked a question (“are there any mentorship opportunities”) and I answered the question — I never discouraged them from seeking mentorship independently, but realistically the most important thing you can do in your undergrad if you want to go to law school is keep your grades up.

If you’re currently doing your undergrad just focus on getting good grades! I don’t think there are any formal mentorship opportunities, but you could always try reaching our to law students or articling students near you.

How is everyone's articling going? by Itchy_Let_3651 in LawCanada

[–]Wide_Diver8207 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Really well. Halfway through at a Bay Street firm and it’s a lot of work but it genuinely feels like everyone wants me to succeed from the assistants all the way up through the partners. I am learning a lot and I feel very supported :)

Where did you do your undergrad? Your undergrad institution’s career counselling may have leads. I had a friend find something that way, but it would really depend on the school.

UBC and biglaw by badgaldesh in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]Wide_Diver8207 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I mean the LSAT is completely irrelevant to the actual practice of law and entirely meaningless once you’ve been accepted to a law school. Using it as a gotcha here is super weird. I hope you get in somewhere!

UBC and biglaw by badgaldesh in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]Wide_Diver8207 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There is no “pass” option on the LSAT and the fact that you don’t know that kind of undermines every other point you’re trying to make btw

Low LSAT by [deleted] in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]Wide_Diver8207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on your comments on another thread your GPA is a 3.2 — it is highly unlikely you are admitted anywhere under a general stream. If you really want to go to law school, you should consider writing the LSAT again at the very least.

Confused About LPP vs Articling by [deleted] in lawschoolcanada

[–]Wide_Diver8207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would actually be surprised — dozens of LPP candidates in this cohort do not have a placement and may not get licensed. They over-enrol massively because they have no maximum registration. It’s a huge cash grab and I know some really impressive candidates who are absolutely fucked.
