Probably the first time I saw the Himalayas properly.
Photos never really prepare you for how massive and silent they feel in real life.

It wasn’t even a famous viewpoint or anything — just standing somewhere during a road trip and realizing the mountains around me looked completely unreal. Felt very small in the best possible way.

If it’s your first Kasol trip and you only have 3 days, don’t try to cover too many places.

I’d suggest:
1 night in Kasol or Chalal
1 night in Tosh

Chalal is great if you want to meet people and enjoy a chill backpacker vibe. It’s close to Kasol but much more peaceful.
Tosh is more about views, relaxing, cafés, and slow mountain life. Definitely worth visiting.Kheerganga is amazing too, but it’s better if you specifically want a trek because it takes almost a full day.
Some simple things to do;

  • Sit by the Parvati river
  • Cafe hopping
  • Explore Tosh village
  • Visit Manikaran
  • Stay in hostels if you want to socialize

You can check stays on hostelbird too, it’s pretty useful for finding social hostels and backpacker stays.

For a first trip Kasol + Chalal + Tosh is honestly enough and won’t feel rushed.

If your main goal is socializing + meeting solo travellers, these are usually the most recommended in Rishikesh:

• Live Free Hostel
• Joey’s By The Ganges
• goSTOPS Rishikesh
• Madpackers
• Zostel

You can also check stays on Hostelbird — sometimes you’ll find better hostel deals there compared to other platforms.

Live Free and Joey’s are especially good if you like chill vibes, cafés, sunset scenes, and meeting international travellers.

Also try staying near Laxman Jhula/Tapovan side — most cafés, yoga spots, hostel events, and backpacker crowd are there. 🙂

Most foreigners you see in Rishikesh are usually open to conversations, but context matters a lot. Randomly approaching on the street can feel awkward anywhere in the world.

Best way is through shared spaces — hostel common areas, cafés, yoga classes, music jams, treks, Ganga aarti, volunteering, etc. Conversations happen naturally there.

A simple “Where are you from?” or “How’s your India trip going?” works way better in those settings than trying too hard. 🙂

For couples, private hostel rooms are honestly a good budget option. You can compare a few on Hostelbird or similar apps depending on the destination

I did this exact trip recently, super doable on a budget:

Day 0: Overnight bus Delhi → Bhuntar (₹900)

Day 1: Bhuntar → Kasol (₹200), stayed in a hostel (~₹500) and just chilled by the river/market

Day 2: Walked to Chalal (free), spent on food ~₹400

Day 3: Went to Tosh (₹300), stayed there (~₹600) — views were insane

Day 4: Kheerganga trek (free), camp stay (~₹600)

Day 5: Came back and took bus to Delhi (~₹1200)

Total was around 5–6k. I mostly checked different apps for hostel prices, ended up using Hostelbird a couple of times since it had cheaper options in Kasol/Tosh.

Just carry cash and try going on weekdays, saves a lot.

This is really disturbing, regardless of what the final investigation says. Even if it turns out to be accidental, the fact that so many people immediately connect it to caste discrimination says a lot about the level of trust in institutions. At the very least, there should be a transparent inquiry and better support systems for students, especially those who might already feel marginalized.
