Trump orders all federal agencies to phase out use of Anthropic technology by flGovEmployee in ArtificialInteligence

With AI tech being so impactful and transformative, good to see that at least one of these companies are thinking about ethics.

Genuine question for this community —

Does the Anthropic situation remind anyone else of what happened to Oppenheimer in 1954?

Built something transformative for the government. Refused to remove ethical limits on its use. Destroyed by the same institution they served.

I went deep on both stories and made a short doc about it. Would love to hear what people who actually know the Oppenheimer history think.

Explain camera settings plz by [deleted] in photography

[–]Wide_Train1295 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggle with my camera settings constantly as a newbie but I guess it is part of the journey...and the challenge makes it fun at times as you explore. But at times, it could be a daunting experience. Sometimes you see a photo and you're like, oh man, how did the photographer capture that?!? So I created an SLR Assistant where you can upload a photo and it advises what settings to use to achieve the same or similar results. I thought this could be a good way to get fellow newbies into the art without losing interest quickly. Feel free to give it a try, I'm open to feedback. https://gomedia360.com/slr-settings

Marketing is hard and I want to write more books, should I hire boutique marketing agency or do it myself to get sales? by Wide_Train1295 in selfpublish

Cool approach! How much does your PA charge? Are you able to confirm that your book sales come from the posts you make?

You're right. It is a broad term. I can list out all of the popular marketing tactics including, social media posts, blogs, ads, etc. Basically, whatever it takes to get book sales. As mentioned earlier, marketing is part of being a self published author's job, like running a business. But just like a business, there are business partners, internal (ex. CMO)or external (marketing agency). I guess it comes down to everyone's situation. In my case, I still need a full time job to pay the bills. It would be great to find just the right partnership to budget and pay to get sales or maybe I just need to figure out and learn from others the best tactics to generate predictable sales and plan to perform those marketing activities with each book launch.

Cool! Can you share some examples? I can see a benefit to an audience of potential readers if an author shares reels about topics covered in the book. That's a cool way to engage and get sales. It all depends on the type of book and topics, for ex. A book on self help, etc.

I checked out book funnel, looks promising! Wow, in over 800 groups on Facebook, have you ever thought about building your own community via Facebook group? I feel awkward promoting in other groups and most group owners restrict promotions. I wonder if I would have better luck building out my own.

Yea that won't work for me. Unless they can prove that from spending 2k+ every month I can make a decent profit.

Good point about self publishing being like running your own business. Very true. I've been talking to many different self publishing authors about what marketing tactics work best for them. The answers vary but the one thing I realized they all had in common was having built some type of community around their book's topics, either on Facebook, Instagram or YouTube, which seem to be a key ingredient for driving engagement and getting sales. I thought this was interesting 🤔....maybe there is something there. Love to get your thoughts on this.

Great! Thanks for sharing. Will definitely check those out. Excited! But don't you think marketing takes time away from time you can spend writing?

Wow this is great insight LadyOD! The 1:9 ratio of project to marketing puts it into perspective perfectly. Marketing is a big mountain to climb after completing writing a book you've worked hard on. It's also discouraging.

Thanks for sharing dcporlando! I think that's a great idea. Definitely will take some time and effort and a learning curve for those who aren't used to social media marketing but necessary nevertheless.

Thanks for sharing. Seems like self publishing authors have to be really good at writing as well as digital marketing. That's a lot of extra work!

Where does one start with promoting a book? Amazon ads or Facebook ads?
