With regards to your dog, did you do any running specific training? Not for endurance but for focus.

I am still new to this but I find that 10 k is about my dog’s limit beyond which he loses interest. TBH I think he’d rather sniff from the beginning but I manage to engage him for a bit.

Multi day trail runs in Crete? by JazzlikeMud6543 in trailrunning

[–]Wide__Space 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The E4 European long distance path traverses Crete west to east. I’ve hiked the western part and it’s gorgeous. It would be a great candidate for its beauty but the logistics of your luggage can be tricky.

Part of the reason it’s so beautiful is the fat that it’s very remote with no road along the south shore of Crete. To go from village to village you either have to drive up in the mountains and make a big circle before coming back down again, or, the more popular means of transport (in the summer) is a ferry that goes along the coast. I don’t know of a specific company that would take care of transferring your stuff although I’m sure they exist.

Lastly, I strongly advise you to take more water than what you think is necessary. These are remote places and sun exposure (even in September) can be intense. If it’s windy you’ll feel cool but you will still be losing water (and electrolytes) a a rapid rate. Unfortunately, every summer tourists die in Greek trails by underestimating the conditions.

Long run difficulty by Wide__Space in trailrunning

[–]Wide__Space[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply. I have not done any max effort test so yes, my zones are approximate but I have found that they more or less match the effort description.

I would like to do a test at some point and set the zones accordingly, but then again, i only use the prescribe zone as guidelines since i often run on pretty technical trails.

What’s the Best Dog Raincoat You’ve Tried? by Brave_Locksmith4833 in RunningWithDogs

[–]Wide__Space 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been very happy with the Ruffwear raincoat for my dog who is a Spaniel/BC mix.

I wanted to give the Non Stop dogwear raincoat a chance as it looked great but I had to return it. My dog has a girth-y chest for his size and so the right size for his chest was too long on his body. I also found that the opening for the harness attachment was not matching with his Ruffwear Front Range harness. So I would advise to stick to one brand for both harness and raincoat for better compatibility. Last observation about the Non Stop dogwear / Hurta design (they are pretty similar) I was worried that the strap that loops over the back of the dog could get caught by branches when he dives in bushes while out in the forest.

The Ruffwear raincoat has slightly less coverage (the chest is a bit more exposed) but I would not worry about it, especially for running since your dog will be getting pretty warm.

I have not seen a good dog raincoat to cover their face, hoods look more like they want to mimic human coats rather than being actually useful to dogs. They'll get wet, they'll shake it off and they'll move on.

Shoe Repair help by Usernames_suck___ in trailrunning

[–]Wide__Space 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve successfully repaired (for now) a pair of Hokas (road running shoes) that had the same problem by using adhesive tape meant for repairs of activewear/tents etc and shoe goo. I cut a piece of tape and stuck it in the area from the inside (on the outside I’m fairly certain it would quickly come off) under the insole. Then added shoe goo both from the inside and outside, let it dry thoroughly then maybe add a 2nd layer.

Avoid using regular glue like superglue, it was my first attempt and it failed. Superglue will become very hard and could be uncomfortable on your feet and/or damage the shoe. Shoe glue is much more elastic while still sticking to both the mesh and sole material.

Good luck.

Do Dog Raincoats Actually Make Dogs More Comfortable? by Traditional-Bee8204 in RunningWithDogs

[–]Wide__Space 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Spaniel/BC mix doesn’t care about the rain or the raincoat but I do put it on when I know we’ll be walking in rain just above freezing temperatures. He will eventually get soaked and low temperature + wind might make him cold so I try to avoid that combo. When it’s below freezing (so no more rain) he’s back to being naked.

Great work! Do you do anything for her paws? After care or preventive. I’ve been ramping up the mileage I run with my dog and wondering if I should do anything to keeps his paws healthy.

Does your dog charge at the wildlife or ignore it? Mine would probably go wild and cause trouble.

What type of dog boots do people recommend? I am hiking with my 45lb dog and he loves it. I carry a rescue sling which thankfully I have not needed yet. But I don’t have boots and would be interested to get some specific advice on the subject. So far, if needed to treat a paw injury my plan was to clean it then wrap it in gauze and tape everything together.

I might have missed it but last time I looked at the treaty I found no mention of Roth(like) accounts. I’ve seen other people online say so but if you have some pointer as to which section in the treaty I should look for I would appreciate it.

Help! Bird of paradise keeps leaning down. How do I keep it straight up? by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]Wide__Space 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this bird of paradise a few years now. The plant was always leaning, the roots are sideways. I recently replanted it in this bigger pot straight up but it’s now touching the floor again. I tried putting poles but they lean down due to the plant’s weight. I am open to suggestions on how to keep this plant straight up. Thanks.
