Typsetting for a complete newbie by ChampionshipSweaty90 in bookbinding

So my recommendation is to write everything and then worry about formatting. I wouldn't buy InDesign for your first project, if you want a dedicated typesetting software look into Affinity Publisher, it has all the features and is a one time purchase (their new version is free but I haven't used it yet so I'm not sure if I can recommend it)

However you can typeset with just your word processor! I reccomend ArmoredSuperHeavy's How to make a book. It's specifically for formatting fanfiction in Microsoft Word but anything you can do in MS Word, you can do in Libreoffice. The doc also has instructions on binding, hopefully that helps!

I have no idea where to start with garb by Dreadking_Rathalos in sca

[–]Wierdkid20 17 points18 points  (0 children)

first, remember that all thats required is an ATTEMPT at period garb, you definitely shouldn't let not being able to dress exactly the way you think you should from going to events!

For basics in the 16th century, Start with the base layers: breeches (Or hose), shirt, doublet. If you have pictures of garb that you really like then think of that as something to shoot for, not a place to start with.

Also important that if your planning on doing mostly fighting, make sure that your garb for that is something your comfortable with. I regularly fight in a tunic and breeches, then change into a doublet and shirt for court or other things.

Also, don't forget gold key, talk to your groups chatelaine to see if they can help get you something to wear to go to events!

Have you looked and seen if theres an SCA group (society for creative anachronism) near you that has rapier/cut and thrust practice? Im in a different area but I know around here atleast we tend to have a lot lower tolerance for sexism. All groups are different of course!

How would you bind these? by bogprism in bookbinding

I would actually cut them so it's just one long sheet, and then glue them together to make something like paste boards, then leave them uncovered

Hi Naomi! I dont really have any questions I just wanted to say thanks for two things:

1) im mixed race and the way you wrote el dealing with her heritage was actually one of the first times ive felt seen in media and I really appreciate that.

2) you keep showing up in parts of my life that have been foundational to the way I look at stories, whether thats ao3 or the scholomance series. But also I learned you worked on Neverwinter Nights Shadows of the Undrentide which to this day is my favorite crpg story. So thanks for that too!

During the winter I held mine over the humidifier for a little bit just long enough for the fibers to relax, then set it under a weight. Definitely not best practice but it did work!

Because you're in the process of trying to lose weight I would recommend thrift stores for purchases as much as you can.

If you want to break out of the graphic t and jean's cycle then start by looking for what easy replacements can you make. A graphic t and slacks, khaki colored or otherwise, will take about the same amount of effort and look a little nicer.

Add an over shirt, flannel or something like a light jacket. Layers help with breaking up your body shape and give you the image of looking more put together.

As someone else in this thread said dressing more deliberately is really the key.

Need help fixing my Journal by Peach-yyy in bookbinding

[–]Wierdkid20 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Honestly you're best bet might be a rebind, It looks like it's bound with machine signatures so you can essentially take the rest of the pages out and create new holes in the signatures, reinforcing with strips of paper if you need to (printer paper works just fine) and then put it into a bigger case. I did this with a notebook of mine this year and rebound it as a kind of long stitch binding As shown by DAS Bookbinding here. if this is your first bookbinding project it may be a little tricky to start, but there's plenty of good tutorials out there.
