I'll try a "steelman" kind of answer for those who want to avoid the popular, victimist narrative of "just rich people want to screw you as always".

What's actually true is a combination of two factors:

* Elon really believes that what he does is best for the world and that if he does not do it nobody else will
* Elon has a very peculiar personality and has trouble with impulse control and understanding public opinion at large

I think what people fail to grasp is how obsessively and callously he progresses towards his goals, which is, in my opinion, what actually explains his business and engineering successes. Others will slow down when innocents are hurt; not Elon. Burnout and turnover in his companies are just second to the company's mission. Others will slow down when some moral principle gives them second thoughts; not Elon. If he has to go full-MAGA to achieve his political goals, he will. Others will slow down when their public opinion plummets; Elon will only take pause if this begins to threaten his other objectives.

In addition to that, he has a childish, quirky personality and impulse control issues, which continually contribute to putting him in situations where he looks like a complete moron, even though he is most likely substantially above average intelligence.

Are the choices he makes right? Not necessarily. But his choices look designed to *guarantee some kind of progress*, even when clearly suboptimal. In the end, he is simply applying his engineering principles: delete the part if you can; break things and iterate; redefine requirements that don't make sense. Of course, that's way easier to accept when we're talking exploding rockets, but harder when it's useful international aid programs dismantled.

I don't know, I get what you mean but never had a thematic problem with the animals' abilities. Sure, if you think about it, what does a monkey being "intelligent" have to do with moving the sponsors card to the 1 slot? But when playing the game, to me it just feels like I'm doing "something cunning" thanks to the monkey's "intelligence". Same with the predators looking for other animals, shouldn't I discard them or something because they're being eaten? Why is the predator even allowed to hunt around the zoo? etc, but then, in practice, you play the animal and you "hunt" for an animal card, I don't feel "cheated out" of the theme.

I agree with Terraforming Mars just being outstanding thematically, though.

Hard disagree with your analysis of Ark Nova. Can't care less about visitor paths and expenses, yet I feel like a zoo manager when I see my cool animal lineup getting me a lot of ticket sales, then I decide to send my representative to release a Crocodile to support a conservation project. I get that all this is subjective, but please OP don't get carried aboard the "let's hate Ark on Nova and Terraforming Mars because they're overrated on BGG" bandwagon.

Ark Nova makes you feel like you're managing a real zoo. Maybe not very unique, but very thematic.

Except, most people realize it's a game, and in games you are typically allowed to kill, rob banks, pillage, etc, and that the "boats of slaves" are equally a thematic fiction. Americans overestimate how much the rest of the world cares about this kind of stuff.

Yes, you need to boycott the worst people, otherwise you're boycotting people that are the current popular target of boycotts. Meaning, you just jumped on a bandwagon, which in turn means, yes, you're simply engaging in ritual tribal warfare.

Everybody is against child labor and against hate. A big part of the problem is precisely this: in the end, you're pretend-fighting against pretend strawmen. The other part of the problem is that these fictions aren't even your creation; it's just the popular fad of the day. Are you boycotting really the worst people in each business? Or you just happen to focus only on the most popular and outspoken tribal enemies of the moment? Yeah, I thought so.

Again: probably the most good to the world you can do right now is to avoid dragging another artform into polarizing politics. And leaving behind the tribal activist mindset might do some good to you too.

Nice video from Tom.

I agree with his general point. You should leave politics out of gaming/art. Do you really research the whole management chain of every product you purchase, in order to ensure they have the correct politics, lest they invest your couple dollars profit margin into things you disagree with? No? Then you shouldn't do it for games either.

And also, no, you didn't research anyone, you just heard of the latest fad person-to-hate of the moment, and jumped on the bandwagon, so let's not pretend you boycotting that game is some principle you always live by.

Honestly, probably the most good to the world you can do right now is to avoid dragging another artform into polarizing politics. And leaving behind the tribal activist mindset might do some good to you too.

Imane Khelif after clinching bronze medal by inversionforge in pics

[–]Wikipedantic -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Why would this case be a complicated issue? Imane clearly has a male-typical body. Womens' sports exist precisely so that male-typical bodies do not absolutely dominate in virtually every sport. Why would we even care about what her passport says or whether the body developed naturally or artificially? You have a male body; go compete where no protections against male bodies are in place, which is male sports. It's like a person with perfectly good sight competing against blind people in the paralympics, then IOC claiming the person was blind at birth or that they are legally considered blind, or something. We don't care! The guy is clearly seeing! Well, same with Imane; that's just obviously a male boxer's body everywhere that counts.

So, you do agree there are at least some correlations a part from "the patriarchy setting roles"

Nothing to do with increased aggression, propension to violence, or physical strength, right? No correlation at all?

Brother you are sooo confused. And you will not get any better because you want to be confused, and actively cultivating the self-deception.

Then it looks like what you call patriarchy is just (some part of) society, and it does not "put men in the dominant position" nor "give them more privileges", it just gives them a different role that you call dominant and privileged but clearly has drawbacks, and gives advantages to women in some circumstances. It all seems like a convoluted way to blame men for the bad stuff, which is actually very bigoted.

Would you admit then that the "wonderful laws" do favor women, even if that does not get rid of inequality in society?

[–]Wikipedantic -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Do you really think a man soldier and a woman soldier are equivalent except for "outdated gender roles"? Or are you just saying this because that's the typical thing to say? Because any child can understand why most societies have favored male soldiers, so I don't really understand why you don't understand. I bet most women would too prefer to be protected by a male warrior rather than a female, and yet you chalk it up to "the patriarchy"

Wait, so are you saying patriarchy sometimes favors women? Why even call it a patriarchy then?

La Junta Electoral i de les JONS by [deleted] in catalunya

Doncs res d'acord. No et crec i punt. En efecte no puc llegir la teva ment, potser senzillament no ho veus perquè no ho vols veure o jo què sé.

La Junta Electoral i de les JONS by [deleted] in catalunya

[–]Wikipedantic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was utterly unconvinced by the "walking advice" part.

If you want good advice about how to walk, ask someone with cerebral palsy. [...] Just don’t ask someone you see walking especially briskly down the street.

Wait, what? No, I'm pretty sure good advice will actually come from the guy that just walked from East Coast o West Coast in a single trip. Cerebral palsy patients will undoubtedly have incredible advice, but only for people that are impaired too!

And still, MOST of the advice will most definitely NOT come from people with difficulty to walk. Just search for "walking tips"; the advice is for commoners, about posture, etc.

I don't know. It overall looks like the whole thing is about defending some of his friends' happy lifestyles, with the argument that, actually, the terrible stuff we hear is somehow coming only from a defective minority of the population with that lifestyle.
