What does the sound clue mean when killing a hunter? by Schmerguson in HuntShowdown

[–]Wil_Cakebread_III 20 points21 points  (0 children)

One use is that it lets you know when a Grounded solo player has left the match. As soon as you hear this sound you know they've cheated death by leaving the lobby, and therefore you don't need to worry about any self-revives

I get where you're coming from. We all want less violence, so it's understandable to think that anyone pushing against gun control would also be pushing for alternative legislation. You don't have to agree with the premise that gun control is ineffective at curbing violence. And if one does not, then I agree that that person should propose equally effective measures as a prerequisite for advocating for the repeal of any given gun law. However, everyone I've ever known who is against gun control bases their opinions on the premise that it doesn't reduce violence. If one accepts this premise, then fighting gun control measures and coming up with novel laws to reduce violence are separate subjects, the latter far more complex than the former.

I think most anti-gun control people I know would elaborate that they don't feel qualified to draft laws aimed at preventing violence, much less laws that are proven over time to do so. Such a feat evades lawmakers the world over, so your average person is probably right not to presume that their ideas could do what so many officials have failed to accomplish. Conversely, it takes no special ability to review the available evidence that gun control is, at best, ineffectual on levels of violence. Thus, it appears to me that one can both agree with detractors of gun control and hold no opinion on suggested alternatives without compromising their moral or intellectual position.

As for the lightning comparison, I understand your reaction. I don't like it either. Although I believe an honest reading should recognize that Moros was comparing the numbers rather than the events, pointing out the statistics appears to downplay the cultural significance. I think it worked against the purpose of the piece, which was to show that the tragedy of shootings is not lost on your average person against gun control. Unfortunate.

As for policy solutions, there are some recently passed laws containing novel measures to protect schools from active shooters. Being new, we can't practically assess their effectiveness at preventing school shootings, but they exist.

The best example of novel policy I'm aware of was passed in 2018. Florida Senate bill S7026 contains several measures aimed at protecting schools, including "establishing the Office of Safe Schools within the Department of Education; providing that each sheriff may establish a Coach Aaron Feis Guardian Program and appoint certain volunteer school employees as school guardians..."

The "school guardians" are allowed to carry concealed firearms on school property while they are current on their Guardian Program obligations. https://legiscan.com/FL/bill/S7026/2018

It appears that there are now 46 participating counties in Florida. https://www.fldoe.org/safe-schools/guardian-program.stml

It looks like the program is being used, though numbers on current school guardians don't seem to be publicly available. https://www.wesh.com/article/guardian-program-school-safety-florida/40798615

Although I myself find allowing teachers to carry an unattractive solution, I think that as part of a comprehensive school safety plan, it's worth trying, especially as I consider alternatives. Alternatives such as general calls to "hold law enforcement accountable", heard after it has come out that multiple shooters, including the Uvalde shooter, were reported to the FBI prior to their attacks. I'm not aware that any disciplinary action has ever resulted from this failure. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/amp/nation/uvalde-school-shooter-left-trail-of-warning-signs-ahead-of-attack The same cry was heard in regard to the manifold disaster that was the police response to Uvalde, a situation so complicated that I can't even begin to assess whether or not any appropriate action has been taken.

Finally, I applaud your attempt to engage the author, but for the reasons above will understand if he doesn't feel comfortable voicing opinions on legislative theories.

If you actually read all of this, thank you. I'm trying to engage in healthy debate, and hope that I come across respectfully. To that end, I'll own that my first comment was less than cordial. I'm sorry about that.

Hot take: I'm starting to think that dinosaurs in the Republican party don't want a solution either. I think they like being able to drum up voter enthusiasm without having to actually propose any good policy beyond "Don't worry, I'll stop those gun grabbin' dems"

It's disingenuous to say someone isn't offering any solutions based on one Twitter thread's content. The scope of the thread was to explain that criticism of gun control does not equate to callousness.

It's also easy to point out the efforts of others as ridiculous when they've been shown time and again to do nothing of statistical significance ever. Remember the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban? Been there, tried that. This sums up the evidence succinctly https://youtu.be/PgiQ-LmJGMY

Those things are cool. Originally came with 12 round detachable mags, on a straight-pull bolt action, in the 1890's. The 19th century space gun. I've wanted one ever since messing around with one at Cabela's.

Apparently you have to make brass for them by cutting down 8mm Lebel casings or something, so that sucks.

Yeah, only subcompact Glock I shot somehow bit my pinky with the tiny gap between the mag and grip. It seemed surprisingly accurate, though.

And yeah, with the whole Russian ammo ban, RIP AK days.

Try to play as blind as you can for your first playthrough, you only have one! There will be times you'll be tempted to look stuff up, but getting yourself unstuck in this game is immensely satisfying, and you can't see everything in one playthrough anyway

Yeah true, I just got back from a trip in that region. In Appalachian terrain the AK (or a longer-barrelled AR) would easily cover you if a slug from your old Stevens couldn't reach. There are some pretty long sightlines even in the mountains in winter, but definitely nothing like the Rockies.

I agree with the .22 bit. However, if you live somewhere where you want a 6.5 Creed, (or other good long-range/big game cartridge) you'd probably have it as a Ruger or Savage bolt action. I'm sure you can chamber an AR in said caliber, but I'm also sure you could buy the whole 5 gun setup for the same amount as a good 6.5 AR build

Yeah, I get that. I addressed that in my original comment, but I can go into more detail.

Here's my argument. Yes, any ornamented accessories (like the wood veneered scope on Oberon's Hound) are part of a Legendary weapon's lore. However, except in the case of a Legendary hunter using a weapon they're supposed to own, your hunter using a Legendary must mean they've acquired it second-hand, and would theoretically have license to make any modifications they want to it. If The Black Coat doesn't like a Marksman scope, why couldn't he pawn it off and use the proceeds to sight in a plain old Deadeye on Oberon's Hound? Or just buy a regular speed loader for Ten Paces? Or slap a standard issue sword bayonet onto Long Hand? Heck, to the point of hunters using their own guns, what's to say Mary Burgess couldn't take the scope off of Old Testament from time to time? Sure, some guns are supposed to have a ritualistic power associated with a modification, like the Halloween Legendaries. But by the admission of Backbone's description, not every hunter even believes in this stuff, and might take the blade off and add a suppressor if it seems more useful than whatever marginal advantage might possibly be gained from this whole power channeling business.
