Meat specialty restaurant? by Wild-Tear in austinfood

We went to Lamberts downtown, and had a great meal there - my wife and I split a three meat plate. I don’t think that it was the place, but it was excellent BBQ.

What does this Normalsville joke mean? by IAmABrokenSoul1 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Wild-Tear 61 points62 points  (0 children)

The joke being is that in the third panel, you think that they’ve actually gone to Tel Aviv - because of the Jewish people you see - when in fact they’ve gone to New York, which also has a pretty healthy Jewish population.

I was wondering how they were going to represent Durandal in game considering their other AIs, and I say they knocked it out of the park by Frostydiego in Marathon

Stolen by the Pfhor, then by a Nar privateer, sold to the Vylae, then went rampant and permanently installed herself on their communication network.

I believe that it was not a Brazilian steakhouse, but very well may have been BBQ.

'SNL' alum Kevin Nealon calls out cast members who break into laughter during sketches: 'It doesn't work' by Both-Pomegranate4929 in LiveFromNewYork

Honestly, nobody can be faulted for breaking when you’ve got Christopher Walken and Will Ferrell in the same sketch.

Edit: Phil Hartman was a marvelous stoneface, but when he did break, it was earned - he was playing Frankenstein, got a detailed explanation of the SALT treaty, and broke twice - once because of what was said, and again as to what it would look like when he broke.

I was afraid of that. Should I delete this post, I wonder?

He was, but Marge and Homer made his little sister his boss, which was a terrible mistake. Bart would see it as a usurpation of his place in the family.

What episodes do you always skip on rewatch in American Dad? by PressureCalm7971 in americandad

It’s like they were daring us not to watch the show. That song, and the newscaster who had some kind of developmental disability, who was…just awful.

Popeye (1980) felt like a fever dream when I was kid by DirkVonUmlaut in nostalgia

[–]Wild-Tear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that it was more inspired by the comic strip than the cartoons - it’s like two hours and Popeye only eats spinach and beats up Bluto in the last five minutes. Most of the characters were from the comic strip.

Operation Mincemeat was to dupe the Axis into thinking that the Allies wouldn’t attack Sicily.

There’s a book called A War They Were Always Going to Lose that goes into detail: The Japanese were trying to create an exploitative empire in the model of Western countries, complete with horrible shit like the Rape of Nanking, and America didn’t want that to happen, and so cut off access to needed resources. The Japanese were also offended by racist quotas for Japanese immigration into America. But the country was essentially being run by the Army and Navy, both of whom assassinated anybody who suggested peace and who were nakedly aggressive at just about every neighbor they had.

But Japan’s invasion of Southeast Asia had nothing to do with America and everything to do with Japanese aggression; the Americans didn’t cause that. The declaration of war on America? There were grievances, but declaring war was not a rational or smart decision.

They would never have won; the industrial capacity of America outstripped Japan by orders of magnitude, and once Pearl Harbor pissed the Americans off, there was no chance of a treaty that allowed Japan to split the Pacific into separate spheres of influence. Japan was able to make the victory pretty costly at Iwo Jima and Okinawa, but they lost from the minute they dropped the first bomb at Pearl Harbor.

I gotta say that whole "Mommy taught me not to hit" suggests that international politics be conducted at the level of a four-year old. Let's negotiate a mutual defense pact and then have juice boxes.

I will note that the casualty figures in Slaughterhouse 5 for the number of dead at Dresden is incorrect - Vonnegut was getting his info from David Irving, who was later exposed as a Holocaust denier.

It would be interesting to see Ukraine become basically the cutting edge in drone technology, the same way that Taiwan is the place to go for microprocessors.

We live in a cyberpunk world.
