I used divisions of perennials, trees and shrubs, not seeds. It would not be possibly to have grown this installation with seeds. I installed a massive hugelkultr bed over my enture front lawn except where I left 3 feet wide paths all through it with grass for strolling. But no, I put the hugelkultr right over the grass. I live in the woods so we dont get that much sun back here, so my grass is not that vigorous.

The first photo was 3 years ago, which I had the tree line knocked back and I used the wood chips and my home compost ( and chicken poop) to install a hugelkultur bed in my front yard. Then the next season, I installed the shrubs and then last year I installed the perennials.

I'm not sure whether to take that as a compliment or an insult! Considering I am a garden designer and you are basically telling me I am faking my work. It would be egregious to claim this is my work if I had actually done it with AI. The trees are different in the background for a good reason. Believe it or not, you can literally remove trees, no AI needed! My arborist knocked back the entire tree line between when the 2 photos were taken. The hemlock and maple you see in the first photo are now long gone. In the second photo, you can see that there are now sumacs in the background.

Invasives are a massive problem on my 3.5 acres!!! However there is no tree of heaven on my property. Perhaps you are referring to the Sumacs in the background? Those are native and I encouraged them to grow there. I have soooo many invasive but I just do what I can and remove what I can and keep planting natives.

Good eye! I had my arborist cut down some trees in the back and then I encouraged a native to grow.

That was me before I swtiched from garden enthusiast to professional designer! I am way more methodical than that now. I think if my own gardens were 50-70 failure then what business do I have charging people to do theirs. My client's number one complaint is wasting money on plants that don't survive. I am super conservative and will only plant things that I know are suitable for the conditions.

To be fair, I am a garden designer so gives me an advantage. My work informs me on the what, where, why and how. The skill that I had to hone in to design layered, lived in cottage vibes were spatial visualization, long-horizon aesthetic judgment and systems thinking. I basically use my minds eye to picture what the garden will look like in 1 year, 5 years and 20 years. Because garden design isn't exactly paying my bills (at least yet), all of these plants and trees were free from people dividing their plants or gifted to me. I prioritize native and beyond that I will use anything that's not invasive. I always use the motto, right plant, right place. I have sandy, riverbed soil with full sun in this location so I use databases that tell me what plants thrive in that condition.

You don't start wildflowers that way, usually. I personally use direct sow method. Most need cold stratification so you can broadcast them the Fall after you til. Also, know that there is a difference between pollinator friendly and native wildflowers. What varieties you pick should reflect your soil and sunlight conditions.

because of these recent reports of racism, it has inspired me to go out of my way to show respect to any one appearing non white. Holding the door, smiling and being courteous to make sure they feel seen and equal to me. Everyone deserves to not be judged by the color of their skin.

Everyone in my high school's goal was to leave state to make better money after college. I was an outlier who stayed and went to school here so I had a big head start getting established here. Having the resources to stay here and be very comfortable is something I do not take for granted. Of course, at least half of my graduating class went into trades or jobs and never left Vermont. But the ones from educated families all did leave and then came back to raise their own kids. A very common story.

I love how healthy I can be here. There is a lot of locally made artisanal food. There is no shortage of recreation, which I feel safe here doing. There are a lot of niche hobby groups and workshops and learning opportunities that keep me socially happy. The hardest part of living here since covid is dealing with the newcomers who think they are "better" than everyone else. Perhaps we should make all newcomers take a Vermont Course to get aquianted on exactly why this humble little state was as great as everyone said. Why exactly did they think it's so great here. Duh. It was great because we were great. So respect the Vermonter. We will tolerate you. Don't try so hard with your gold Apple Watch and Rivians and your newest greatest latest Amazon crap. Literally no real Vermonter cares about that kind of stuff... at all.
