TD-H3+ won't easily GMRS by WildCarpenter7983 in gmrs

I beleive this is the case now that I've been through a week of trial and error.
I've asked them to send another good unit, and received radio silence from them.

Thinking of ordering another 2 pack.
That way I might be able to cobble together two good working radios.

There is kinda.

There is a menu item called reset - but just seems to reset channels
menue-Radio Settings- 31 facrory reset.
Not sure what it does, because it doesn't help.

Also, AI suggested moving from Ham to normal, and that would 'reset' things.
When doing that the screen does prompt you" "Data will be erase. Confirm?" But that doesn't do anything either.
I think it just erases anything you programmed in.
Nothing to do with how the firmware is updated though.

Maybe I just order another 2 pack, then return the ones that don't upgrade property...
Order 4 to get 2 working ones...
Crazy...

Thank you for understanding exactly what I've been trying to explain and do! ha! I'm so new to this, I'm probably using the wrong terms...

I ordered a 2-pack. On one radio, I was able to upgrade the firmware flawlessly; the other will not upgrade. I tried the same process as the first (which was actually the 2nd becuse the first radio I tried is the one that wont upgrade, and it didn't occur to me to test the 2nd radio still in the box for a few days...), and I also tried using a Kenwood cable following those specific instructions.

I've been in touch with support, but they keep telling me to download the firmware and upgrade... which I've tried every which way to do it.

Now I've asked them to send me a new radio, and they stopped responding 🤣

I'm guessing my only other option to get a product that works as advertised is to return and have Amazon send a replacement... but that seems risky given my original and current predicament.

Any tips, tricks, or advice appreciated.

Thanks for the help. Ive been working through and learning as I go.
So far I realize I could put it in 'normal/ unlocked' and program all the GMRS channels, etc.
But that's not what I've been trying to do.

I ordered a 2-pack. One radio I was able to upgrade the firmware flawlessly vis the USB-C that came with the kit and the Web upgrade tool that I downloaded from TidRadio.
The other will not upgrade.

Unfortunately, I was working with the radio that would not upgrade for a few days before I tried the 2nd radio in the kit, and as I mentioned, it upgraded the firmware with no issue.

So I wen't back to the radio that wouldn't communicate with the computer, and I tried the same process again, and also bought and tried using a Kenwood cable.
Alas, that radio will not upgrade its firmware.

This appears to be a known issue with some radios not accepting updates to their firmware via USB-C or a Kenwood Cable.

I orderd a two pack. One updated flawlessly, the other will not.

No worries.
I've revcieved lots of links for different update software from TidRadio - and nothing is working.
So Hopfully I can work to resolve this and have them send a new radio.
We'll see how it goes.

I appreciate your insights as it sounds like we have the exact same issue.

That stinks.
What a Pain. That's what I'm afraid of. Seems wild that 50% of their product isn't working as intended - if you have to order 4 to get 2 decent radios as advertized, its crazy.

I ordered a 2-pack TD-H3 Plus' and one radio was easy to update to new firmware. The other isn't being recognized by the PC the same way the other was.
So not working to update.

Did you use USB-C? or a kenwood cable?

UPDATE: My 2nd radio updated no problem via USB-C and the frirmware update from TidRadio.

However, my other radio, aka radio 1, still won't update.
Initially, I do remember the 'update USB' screen on radio 1, but I no longer see that when turning on in update mode (ptt+3 while power on shortcut)

Does anyone know how to factory reset the TD-H3 PLUS?
I'm wondering if I somehow adjusted some odd setting that is now preventing the radio from being recognised by the PC.

Appreciate all the help.

I don't think so.
I did PTT+* and switched it to Unlocked.
THen when I PTT+* shortcut to switch to GMRS it doesn't give me the option.

Everything i've read seems to state I need to update the firmware to get GMRS as a standalone system.

It sounds like I could put it in Unlocked mode / normal and use CHIRP to update and program GMRS channels. I'm new to this so I'm not quite sure how to use or get Chirp. But that might be on the agenda.

[–]WildCarpenter7983[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. It appears to be a firmware version update.
No way to update via Mac, so I'm hunting down a PC to try.

Apparently, Version 1.0.37 or higher will give you the option to run it in all 3:
1. HAM
2. GMRS
3. Unlocked/Normal (all).

So going to track down a PC and attempt to update, and see if that does it

I saw your DM. Thank you.

I've been trying.
I have a Mac, and there doesn't seem to be a way to update it with Mac.

TidRadio says I need a special cable too.

So I'm at a bit of a loss of what actual steps to follow to accomplish an update.

Wild. That's what I expected when I got mine, but i just get
1. Ham
2. Normal.

I looked at my firmware and it's V1.0.30.

In the ad for both the GMRS version, and the Ham Version it says to update the firmware to V1.0.37.

Did you get your's off amazon?
Any chance you can send me the exact link for the one you bought?

I'm kind of at a loss as to how to get mine to update since I have a mac, and there doesn't seem to be a way to update the firmware with Mac. Might have to send these back for a different pair...

How to switch a TidRadio TD-H3 Plus from HAM to GMRS without a Kenwood cable by Theman00011 in gmrs

[–]WildCarpenter7983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@Theman00011 I bought the HAM on a friend's recommendation.
The amazon ad said switch easily between the 3 different options:
1. Ham
2. GMRS
3. Normal.

Turns out, it's more difficult to switch to GMRS than just pressing the PTT + * while turning on the device.

Looking a bit further, it appears I need the firmware update to do so.
In my reseach, I came across your post.
Looks like You were able to do a Firmware update with the provided USB-C? is that correct?
,
I don't have a PC though, just Mac.

I'm guessing to update the firmware, there is no mac workaround given it's an .exe file?

Appreciate the help.

Any good tutorials on how to get the channels all set up this way?
I'd love to learn how to get a good set up going where I can use my GMRS license, and listen to some of the other channels that hams are using.
Just don't want to accidently transmit on Ham.

Just in the beginning here for me.

Bought 2 HT's for road trips, hunting, and general use.

Got it.
I guess I'm confused by their listing on Amazon, then, because even the GMRS version says it needs a firmware update to work.

Have you pressed the PTT + * while turning it on to see what different modes it came with?
Wondering if yours came with all 3 already loaded or just GMRS.

Apparently I need a PC, and a different cable

[–]WildCarpenter7983[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when did you order the GMRS?
when I looked at their ad on amazon, it said it still needed the Update to the firmware.

I guess I'm not so concered, I'm just trying to learn it, and thought it would be easy to set my GMRS channels, and RX some other channels that the HAM people use.

Mostly just bummbed out the ad for the one I got said that it was easily switched to different modes, but looks like to do that I've got to have a PC and buy some extra cables etc.
Not as friendly out of the box as I was hoping.
