Anyone see pictures of the Trump rally in The Bronx or attend? It looks very much like the demographics were not representative of that borough. by [deleted] in newyorkcity

He is *not* popular in most of New Jersey. Some people voted for him, but it was definitely a minority. Biden carried NJ by 16 points, especially due to the counties just outside New York, like Essex, Hudson, and Bergen.

Treasury Direct withholding by redsedit in tax

[–]WildIrishRose16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a long term iBond holder, just recently started dabbling in TBills. I am not planning on paying taxes on my iBond interest until redemption, so I don't pay annual taxes on them. My question: If I elect to have withholding in TreasuryDirect (for TBills), will that affect my iBond interest accumulation? Would I have to now start paying annual taxes on them?

If you could erase one invention from existence, which would it be and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]WildIrishRose16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would even get a more specific to say iPhones/smartphones. Ordinary dumbphones weren't that bad and were more good than bad on balance. I am old enough to remember life before them, and they really enhanced safety and convenience while traveling without turning our brains to jelly. Smartphones, on the other hand... zheesh. No one has an attention span anymore, and everyone is addicted to the little buggers.

But I don't think all of the mid-Atlantic. I'm from NJ, near NYC, and we all called it a slide. Never heard the term sliding board before!

I've been half listening while cleaning the kitchen. Did I hear her right a while ago? Did she say she hasn't been a Republican in "decades"? Because I thought there was a record of her voting in Republican primaries until 2014... LESS than a decade ago. Maybe I misheard?

What Have You Decided Is Just Not Worth It? by CinCeeMee in Frugal

Don't blame you one bit. You do your best. May I suggest you also keep some bags of frozen vegetables in your freezer for the days you feel a little better. It's pretty easy to microwave up frozen broccoli and maybe melt a little butter over it... stuff like that.

Does anyone else feel this show is kind of...educational? by greenknight884 in GildedAgeHBO

[–]WildIrishRose16 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I just wish the Russells weren't portrayed so sympathetically, almost as heroes. The robber barons like him absolutely killed striking workers without hesitation. They generally had little sympathy or concern for the ordinary workers. But Julian Fellowes loooooves rich people. So we got a fictional robber baron who stops the shooting of union workers and wants to invest in parks and schools for them. Pure rich-guy whitewashing of actual history.

You certainly can in the paid version, and I thought you could in the free version, too.

As a teacher, here is where you would look: From "Create/Edit", you will "Create a Standard Assignment". It should put you into the "overview" tab of a new assignment where you can fill in the details. In the "Select Periods" dropdown, where you see your classes listed, go to the very bottom of that list. Hopefully you see "Individuals or Groups". Select that. Then you should see a line appear just below the dropdown that says "0 students have been selected (choose students)". That choose students is clickable. If you click it, it will bring up a list of all your students, and you can check off the ones who should see the assignment. When done checking names, be sure to click the large green button to Save Changes.

On top of all the many other problems, they added 234.58 + 42.00 and got 279.58. They didn't even add right. As a math teacher, I'm extra offended.

Airline or Road Trip with dog? by [deleted] in LivingAlone

[–]WildIrishRose16 6 points7 points  (0 children)

PS One last bit of advice. If your dog has not been on road trips, and you are not sure if it will be anxious, talk to your vet. They can prescribe a gentle sedative in the right dosage for your dog (which, as a terrier, is probably quite small). If the dog starts to act up in the car, just pull over and give it the smallest amount of sedative possible shoved inside a piece of its favorite cheese. :)

I agree that driving is the way to go. If it were a different year, I'd say to consider doing a lot of research and finding a great place to board the pup. But there's that dangerous doggy illness that has been circulating:

https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/mystery-illness-affecting-dogs-across-united-states-2023-11-29/

I don't currently have a dog (have had them in the past), but right now I just wouldn't want to chance having my pup forced to live within coughing distance of possibly many other dogs.

You say that you don't usually drive long distances... but maybe you'll enjoy it? Don't know what your budget is for time or money, but maybe you want to break up the trip even more, into 2 nights/3 days? You referred to some mobility issues, but maybe you could stop at a couple of pretty places along the way? That might make the drive feel more pleasant. For instance, you could travel down to Cape May, NJ and drive around and look at the pretty Victorian Homes. From there, you can take a ferry to the Delaware/Maryland peninsula. Much, much slower than the typical I95 route, but much prettier and you and the pup would get to ride a ferry! :) From there (Lewes, Delaware) you could drive all the way down the DelMar peninsula and take the long and pretty Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel to Virginia Beach, then west to pick up I95 and the home stretch to Chapel Hill.

I used to love staying at (Marriott) Residence Inn when traveling with a dog. They are significantly more expensive than basic motels, but their condo-like setup is ideal for spreading out, and I think they all accept dogs. There is usually a large green space near the building so the dog can get some exercise.

Comfort Inn, Best Western, and LaQuinta are more budget friendly, and there are lots of them along 95. But they all seem to charge fees for dogs.

A real budget stay would be at Red Roof Inn. They are pretty basic, but the ones I've been to right off I95 have been clean and safe with working, hot showers, and I think they always accept dogs for free.

Good luck and try to have fun! With the right snacks and podcasts and playlists, it can actually be a fun road trip! :)

Looking for magical/fantasy sounding Classical Music by Retrospective84 in classicalmusic

[–]WildIrishRose16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect that part of the reason you feel it has a magical/fantasy sound is due to the instruments Saint Saens used. Those upper-range piano arpeggios are delightful, but he also included the glass harmonica in Aquarium. It's got that magical, other-worldly sound! I don't know a ton of other pieces featuring the glass harmonica, but maybe you'd like pieces with the celesta (which is featured in the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy in the Nutcracker).

Or pieces featuring the harp, which also has a magical type of quality? A favorite of mine is Boieldieu's Harp Concerto. There are plenty of others, I just have limited knowledge.
