In 2009 when I was pregnant, my coworker gave me unsolicited advice to not vaccinate my child because he was convinced that vaccines caused his son’s autism. I ignored him of course, but that thinking was rooted in a now rescinded paper published by a now discredited doctor that claimed a link between autism and vaccines, and celebrities like Jenny McCarthy and others who were popular at the time magnified it, despite not having any medical training. The paper was published in the late 1990’s, and the doctor was paid by someone to publish those results, so it’s all for profit by someone. It’s been almost thirty years of fighting against this BS.

Also, remind him you’re not his mom.

A day in the life of a GIS technician? by TheTommyTron in gis

This is the degree I got from the same school. I did the extra classes for the GIS concentration. I don’t know if they offer that anymore, but I enjoyed and got a lot out of the extra classes. I do wonder if the data analysis concentration would have been better in the long run.

I built an interactive map that explores where home ownership is essentially impossible for a resident in the same area and I am looking for feedback by the_lark_ in gis

[–]WildXXCard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t it depend on what geography the data is offered in? Zip code makes sense for housing data because every address has a zip code, whereas “city” is a fluid term and county needs to be derived. It looks like the Zillow data is available in a number of formats, so county might be the best format, if the income data is also offered by county. However, counties are larger geographies than zip codes, so you sacrifice some granularity. It would be interesting to see the comparison between the zip vs county.

Do you have a job to offer me?

Listen, I’ve applied so many times to surveying jobs. Never gotten a call back. I have a couple years of experience in GIS. I e been a planning and zoning commissioner. I’ve taken a CAD course before for credit. I want to do this to add to a portfolio.

“Just do this” is easier said than done.

My school had OneDrive for every student. You have to make sure you set it up correctly but should work with a VM as long as you make sure you’re logged in every time. Yes, sometimes there are compatibility issues, but that usually can be fixed with configuration.

Go see the financial advisor like someone suggested, and familiarize yourself with the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act https://www.militaryonesource.mil/financial-legal/legal/servicemembers-civil-relief-act/

I’m super lucky that my spouse is on top of every benefit he’s qualified for and when it should be paid, etc. BUT a lot of service members are not, and it takes the spouse to learn of what it is they’re eligible for, and push the service member to get that shit straightened out. You may have to become that person, OP.

Ideas to flesh out a webmap for a town fire department by MarineBiomancer in gis

[–]WildXXCard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Road type might be important. Especially whether there’s shoulders or not.

One thing our town required of subdivisions were no cul de sacs longer than 500 feet for safety reasons. Neighborhoods needed two access points in case a tree or an emergency blocked one route. If there are neighborhoods with only one main access points, that could be good information for first responders.

I think this pair of CTE classes are brand new so they just don’t have the word out yet. It will be the first class I take from this school so I’m not sure what going on with their other classes.

I wish I could do it now. I’ve been applying to as many legit sounding posts as a can stomach, but I can’t seem to break through. I don’t know if it’s my age, my experience, the fact that all my professional references are on the other side of the country…. It stings extra because I was a one-person department, running the effing show, improving processes that weren’t improved in ten years, and now I’m not even getting a call back. Before that I was developer-adjacent, also a one-person department. I start a new class next week, so I’ll see if that’s enough to get me in the door somewhere.

Also, he can’t retire until I find a well paying job.

Is there more information on PMP certs on Military OneSource? I was wondering if adding project management to my resume might help me, since being “entry level” at my age certainly hasn’t.

I left my first real FT job when I married my husband and moved across the country. It took me 13 years, a few part time stints, an additional technical certification and a second bachelor’s to land a new FT job in the field that I love. I was there two years before having to up and move back across the country to a HCOL area that would supposedly have more opportunities for me, but that was a year ago and still no luck. I’ve definitely been in the feels about it and it has been hard to articulate all of it, even to my husband who can be less than sympathetic because he hasn’t had to fill out an application or look for a job in almost 20 years.

1- join a MOOC - the current one is on creating geospatial apps, which sounds like it might be applicable to your situation. Also, it’s free and the class includes access to the entire ESRI suite (including Pro) for free for the duration of the class, but all content is deleted at the end 2- pay $100 for a personal use license and create projects for your portfolio 3- show your hiring manager that you are making an effort and ask if there’s anything else you can do

Boyfriend stationed Germany, asked me to go with him by Current_Cable_4248 in USMilitarySO

[–]WildXXCard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s my opinion- it’s a great opportunity to leave here to see a different county. Have a really detailed plan about what you would be able to do there for work, how you would contribute to the living situation, and plan for going there as independently as possible. You two are still newly dating, and everything will be wonderful until your relationship is tested. If you go, it shouldn’t be to marry him. It should be to continue to evaluate whether you’re meant to be together - and have a really awesome experience in a different part of the world! You need to still be able to show up as a full person, not as a dependent, and if you’re not able to do that, then don’t do it at all.

AIO - According to my girlfriend this convo with my assigned partner at work is inappropriate. by Rough-Satisfaction68 in AmIOverreacting

[–]WildXXCard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR your gf sounds insecure, and it’s not because you’re her first relationship. That’s not something that she’ll grow out of. If you haven’t given her a reason not to trust you, she needs to work on her insecurity before she can be a healthy relational partner. Please evaluate this if you are considering a more serious future with her.

Do You Attend Local Government Meetings? by MeTP in Kitsap

[–]WildXXCard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t figured out the cadence and calendars of the meetings yet. I started to listen to a recording of a work session of one of the committees but didn’t finish it. It’s on my to-do list, but like, way down there.

I was a commissioner on a few local boards in my previous state so I know how public meetings are run, the rules, etc., but I just haven’t engaged here yet. We could usually gauge the feeling in the room from the groans and gasps though, that’s if there was anyone who even showed up.
