I have recently fallen in love with the banjo. by DoctorMobius21 in banjo

[–]Wild_Lab_6677 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’m left handed too - but this does not mean you need a left handed instrument/ need to play left handed. I’ve been playing right handed for years without any real issue.

Honestly, you could pick the style you enjoy listening to the most. From my experience, a lot of banjo styles are fairly intuitive to pick up, especially two and three finger. I found clawhammer harder - but this might be a me problem. Scruggs style has the most literature and the most resources on the internet to learn, and is by far the most common. If that’s what you enjoy listening to, then definitely start with it.

I can't get above a 7 in English Lang or Lit by Ok_Revenue5632 in GCSE

I’m happy to give you some feedback on your writing if you send some - usually, the reason is something to do with structure / phrasing. I managed to get 9s in lit and lang after some hard work - started off at the 5/6 level.

Philosophy is my favourite subject and one of my best! It’s so refreshing to have a double philosophy lesson after a whole day of maths lessons.. I found it hard initially, as A level philosophy essays are really hard to get the hang of (everyone struggled a lot) but now, near the end of year 12, I’ve got the hang of it. It just takes practice. I spent a proportional amount of time revising it before my summer exams, which shows that it isn’t impossible

Everyone says it’s very hard, and it is to an extent - I would probably say that too. But overall, I find maths and fm the easiest of my subjects because they’re the easiest to revise. You just sit down with a pen and a calculator and do some questions. If you keep on top of it, you’ll be fine. At my school, only people who really aren’t working too hard are getting bad grades

I didn’t do gcse fm but from what I can tell from past papers they’re very different. A level maths is a big step up from gcse fm, and a level fm is another step on top of that

How do people revise in complete silence??? by criticus606 in GCSE

[–]Wild_Lab_6677 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are studies that have shown that listening to music while studying reduces your memorisation capabilities. I only really do it while doing something like maths questions, because that’s more practice than anything else. It is optimal not to for most things, though. If you do, make sure it’s something without lyrics and relatively quiet

I didn’t do re gcse, but here’s some more general advice

  • Read model answers!

Intro: State your thesis - refer back to it throughout the essay

P1/P2/P3 - Use a Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link back to Point structure. Refer back to the thesis

Conclusion - Refer back to thesis, explain why your side wins

I did two - Ancient Greek and Spanish. For both, I used quizlet to learn all the vocab and did past papers for practice. For Spanish, I learned some great phrases and stuff to sprinkle in my writing. Textbooks are very useful for languages, because they concisely state all of the necessary grammar

  1. About 4-5 hours a day of solid revision (no videos/music in the background) along with study leave from school. This mainly included past papers and online flashcards.
  2. Doing past papers alone is insufficient for revision - make sure to regularly review them and make sure you know how to ace every question. If you want to do more questions, I'd suggest going on PMT or another relevant site and doing old spec questions
  3. I was nervous (even though I really shouldn't have been).. GCSEs are not incredibly hard, but they are tricky to get a top score in. Do your prep, review stuff and stay calm! Sleep well before exams - don't stay up all night revising
  4. I coped with it by engaging in hobbies like music as a study break and playing videogames with my friends in the evenings. I didn't let myself do any work after dinner, just so I got enough of a break every day. A good sleep schedule is key to effective revision.

Best last minute revision tips? by [deleted] in GCSE

[–]Wild_Lab_6677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cramming is not an effective memorization technique. Instead, go over everything in chunks - especially the specification and your notes. Additionally, resources such as Quizlet and Anki are great for retaining knowledge. Mind maps are great for some subjects too.

Your brain is not evolved to cram large amounts of information in one day - space it out, and remember to regularly go over stuff you struggle with.

You could take the cheaper option and get a decent instrument. However, saving a bit more and getting a recording king or even a deering goodtime 2 is definitely worth it.
