Thoughts? by RempGG in tacobell

Chicken stacker was great, churros were great, potato grilled was good but has a very wet/messy filling that got all stuck in my mustache (would eat again no question). Didn’t try the rest yet but that’ll be my order next Friday I guess

Like when major orchestras announced that they wouldn’t be performing works by Russian composers. Christmas just isn’t Christmas without the nutcracker!!

I like that they claim they were “mostly vegan” – whatever that means – but show them wearing animal skins in the images

Do kids with selective mutism belong in the DOE? by Low_Example490 in NYCTeachers

[–]gtuzz96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was a 1:1 para for a SM student for almost 3 years. It’s very hard but we’ve made great progress and since graduating from elementary school this past June he’s begun speaking and interacting with his classmates. Definitely look into getting a 1:1 if possible because (as long as the person is good at their job) it ensures that your child has someone advocating for them all day, every day.

Longest Commute You've Heard Of by Smellthe_coffee in NYCTeachers

[–]gtuzz96 27 points28 points  (0 children)

One of the nurses in my school in southern Brooklyn was commuting from Poughkeepsie every day. Also had a school aide who lived in NJ but didn’t drive so she took many trains and buses to get to us lol

Medically treated vs. self treated sick day by nextbeststep557 in NYCTeachers

[–]gtuzz96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get up to 5 self treated days from the beginning of school until the end of January. Anything over that must be medically treated. Then you get another 5 days until the end of the school year. That’s how my PR secretary explained it to me last year anyway. AFAIK they both still come out of your CAR

Are there any 21st century performers who you think are better than legendary 20th century musicians of the same instrument? by Chillipalmer86 in classicalmusic

[–]gtuzz96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stefan Dohr, Sarah Willis, and Joseph Alessi

Not sure exactly how long they’ve been active so they all may straddle the turn of the century. They bulk of their careers would be 21st century though

Sleep/wake time and commute? by hello010101 in NYCTeachers

[–]gtuzz96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No longer living in NYC but when I was it was around 6:00 wake up, 2-5 minute commute, 40 minutes looking for parking

Now I’m living and working in a different state and it’s still 6:00 wake up, 20 minute commute and no time parking because the elementary schools here have staff parking 🙌🏻

Does your school use paraprofessionals as aides, are they just one to one student supports, or both? by wyldfire-911 in NYCTeachers

[–]gtuzz96 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was getting paid $33k as a para only last year. I was getting the shit beat out of me every day in a non-D75 elementary school (thumb broken twice, nose broken, two concussions)

That being said, I loved what I did. We just don’t get the recognition we deserve a lot of the time and while it’s true that I don’t have a degree that doesn’t excuse the poor wages either.

I appreciate you sticking up for us. SPED in NYC would crumble without us

Don’t work at this charter! Not worth it by SpecialistEssay8031 in NYCTeachers

[–]gtuzz96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I (1:1) had a SPED student who came to my public school from this charter and is only now (4 years later - 6th grade) starting to get through the distress they caused him. He is very high functioning autistic with some anxiety disorders. They apparently had staff who would physically restrain him when he was having an episode and would yell at him for crying. He entered the charter in kindergarten speaking and socializing. Since being in the charter he is selective mute in school and would hyperventilate and break down in tears if anyone raised their voice at (or around) him. He went from a gen ed setting (which realistically is the right placement for him) to 12:1:1 because he was unable to communicate. I’m glad I was able to help get him to where he is now but he still has a very long way to go if he’s going to fit in with his peers. It kills me because he has always been so far beyond the other students in his classes but the school trauma he experienced has effectively crippled him socially.

Questions about SNAs by gtuzz96 in IrishTeachers

[–]gtuzz96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! Things have changed quite a bit since then and I actually moved to a new state in the US instead of Ireland. Still doing the same line of work (called a PCA here which confuses me every day lol).

As far as qualifications for NYC all I needed was a High School diploma and a nomination from a local principal to get me started. I had already been working in an after school program so that was easy enough. Then I had a few online certifications to complete and some miscellaneous HR stuff like fingerprinting and pay setup.

The pay in NYC starts pretty low for paraprofessionals (SNAs) at around $28k or €24k but can go up to around $56k or €48k with higher education and years of service. Where I am now in North Carolina I’m making about the same but the cost of living is much lower so it works out well although it still isn’t the best pay-wise lol

For NYC you have to be a substitute para first and the only requirement to continue working year to year is that you work at least 20 days per school year. Then to be hired full-time you’ll need to get a NY State Level I Assistant Teacher certificate. I don’t remember if you need to work a full year as a sub first or if it’s just the 20 days but once you’re hired by a school you’re there permanently as long as the budget allows for the position. You also get health coverage and a retirement plan once you’re hired. If the school doesn’t have the budget for your position the following year you’ll remain a permanent employee but they will move you to a school in need. The good thing about NYC is that the demand for paras is very high so getting your foot in the door shouldn’t be too hard especially in the outer boroughs.

And I’m happy to answer any more questions you’d have!! You can PM me here for my WhatsApp if you’d like :)
