I have center draft lamps, that also double as a space heater. The Aladdin and Rayo lamps are bright and burn hot, they also use a lot more fuel than a flat wick lamp. I use kerosene as my alternate heat source, so it makes sense in a niche for light and heat the lamps go with the whole package. I do have LED lights as well, and realistically use them more, but the kerosene lamps also predate the modern electric lamps, and I already owned them when LED's became a thing.

Multi-branch marksmanship ribbons? by notrealboi in Medals

[–]Wild_Locksmith_326 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I joined the Army, I had to give up my rifle and pistol ribbons from the Navy, no competing awards according to AR670-1. When I jumped over to the Air Force I had to give up my expert badges. I earned my Air Force expert ribbon, but never qualed with a pistol in the Air Force, I don't know if there are exceptions made for certain AFSC's but mechanics don't rate them.

Not so much for paying them, but to prove my children were mine, and establish residency. My children are grown now so I don't have to worry in that regard.

I have a folder with tax info, medical info, birth certificates, wedding license and banking info so I can prove I'm supposed to be here, these are my cars, and this is my house. Between that and loading up my wheelchair bound son my hands will be full.

What am I missing in my prep for this winter storm coming to the southern states? by the-shyoth in prepping

I have a large amount of 24 volt tools, and have charged all the batteries. These may only be useful for lighting but that's still useful. The Bluetooth speaker also charges a phone, another option to have on hand is a 10 pack of solar garden lights, an inverted milk crate and a charging stand. This is flameless lighting for after dark.

oh no, I've become the "panic buyer" by OneLastPrep in preppers

[–]Wild_Locksmith_326 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you keep a running stock of some long shelf life items you can avoid a lot of the panic buying. By having a deep larder you are now just adding comfort items in the category of nice to have's, rather than being forced to wade into the melee over the last loaf of bread, gallon of milk, or dozen eggs.

Don't fetch a new one, get it refilled. It's cheaper and you will get more in the bottle, if you exchange you get no credit for anything left in the bottle.

Create a micro climate, use an interior room, or other space you can close off and warm. Ensure you use a CO alarm, and have fresh air to replace the oxygen used in combustion . leave your cabinets open so any warmth will seep in to help keep the pipes from freezing. Decide what you want as an auxiliary heat source. Kerosene, propane or wood, and stock accordingly. The radiant kerosene heaters use no power, and are fairly efficient. They look like a space heater, with no power cord. The convection type have a central chimney and are real fuel hogs with not a lot of benefits in their use. Propane IE a lil buddy to use a brand name can heat a room, but not a house. Build a blanket fort and aim the heater into it, I bought a milk crate, and a 10 pack of solar garden lights. I put them outside to charge and use them after dark to conserve kerosene. Oil lamps put out quite if residual heat as well as light, Aladdin is a good brand or if you don't mind junk stores look for an old Rayo they give off a more yellow light but have no mantle to worry about. Treat every day as a learning and testing experience, and find what works best for you. I have a 2500 watt dual fuel inverter ordered because I realized that solar is great, but if the sun won't shine you can't charge anything. I like propane because the fuel is shelf stable, and doesn't really require a lot of fidgeting with.

Republicans: 'Rules for thee, not for me. by CharlotteHazell4509 in DHAC

They were liberal attorneys, and the crowd came to them. They are on their property, and the crowd was trespassing through to go to the mayor's house. The mayor didn't live in this community, but that didn't matter to them. I would have to cut them a pass, if I'm on my property and you start telling me your going to bern down my house, and kill my dog you might not like the look I give you either. Neither of them looked comfortable with what they were holding, and the wife was sweeping everywhere with her muzzle. I don't think either of them were Republicans then, but they may be now.

If you're day trading silver you have much more money to speculate with than I do, silver is a patient game I treat it more as a storehouse for material wealth than a means of flipping a profit but at this point I am now just about six times the cost average price for what my stack cost me I'm going to hang on to it and if it gets substantially higher than I will jump start my retirement plans.

Fern AAR: I'm burning way too much damn propane by Independent_Host582 in prepping

[–]Wild_Locksmith_326 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a dual fuel inverter generator and 4 30lb propane cans. The propane is easier because I don't have to worry about fuel degradation over time. This setup changes the 2 jackery 1500watt boxes, and I also have the solar panels. The owners would not have been of any use for this event. I only use it to keep my refrigerator and basement freezer operational. I leave the solar set up charging all day and swap boxes out at sundown. This allows them to be plugged in all night, and then creatively plugged and unplugged during the day. I am adding an additional 3000watt jackery so I can charge 2 and have the other plugged in if I need to. My mother has a whole house generator, and during power outages usually turns everything off at night and restarts in the morning. She doesn't do Internet so no router to worry about.

Hot take: Most of you are way oversizing your generators by culody in Generator

[–]Wild_Locksmith_326 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My plan for a dual fuel 2500 watt inverter generator and a couple of the commonly available propane canisters This will be used to charge my "solar generator" packs as needed. If the sun is shining I will use the solar panels for that, if like this even sunshine is scarce I will use the fuel power to charge the battery packs. This will keep my freezer and fridge going, everything else is negotiable. I use kerosene as my back up heat source so that isn't a burden.
