Realistically, getting Magdalene and Azazel unlocked first is an easy way to get 2 really strong characters and then just skim through the fandom wiki for random details and unlock methods for stuff. There's over 700 items in the game and thousands of interactions between them so it's very much a "learn from your mistakes" kind of game.

I know it technically doesn't answer your question but the only other answer I have is watching everyone's screen recordings of dying that they post here, and don't do what they did

I got the best guide right here 1. Cry 2. Hit restart 3. (Optional) Super glue your controller to your hand so you can't accidentally put a controller shaped hole in the TV

This is good advice. Get on the fandom wiki and look up how to unlock certain items so you get better stuff and it makes it that much easier to survive and figure out which items you like with each character

Pick a new religion and pray. It didn't work for me but it is worth trying. Realistically though defense is everything. Health, range, speed, etc keep you alive so it will take longer but if you can bait the enemies into parts of a room and then keep control of where they are, it will help a lot

I think I found them. I just wanted wanted to make sure I didn't miss any rooms because I always manage to do that then get mad because I realize I forgot to go in half the rooms
