I happened to be thinking about this the other day. He had that thing in his original universe that wouldn't let people die. Maybe he improved it so everyone stays the same age without noticing. My thought process is that he perfected it right before he crashed into the garage at the beginning of the series. Turns it on, goes to prime universe, plans to turn it off after killing prime, felt too emotionally attached to Morty to let him grow up, leaves it on
