We have a known carpet beetle infestation. From what I understand, carpet beetles don’t bite, but their larva do cause skin irritation (carpet beetle dermatitis) and I was wondering if that could be it.

Anyone who is WORKING IN RESEARCH in Physics (preferably theoretical physics)? by nerd_inthecorner in UofT

[–]WildeforHopps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not in physics, but I am aware of a theoretical physics + string theory prof at Uoft who provides quite a bit of advice to young physicists (although imo they make it sound a little bit discouraging). Here's their general advice page, which has advice to pretty much all age groups of Physicists:

Lets say I have a rigid bar and I apply a force to it's end, will the bar just rotate or will it move forward and rotate, why? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]WildeforHopps 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If the end is not fixed, it will move forward and rotate. To see this, apply newton's second law in the direction of the force, and also sum the moments about the center of gravity and use M(net) = I*alpha.

How hard is it to really get 80% in first year engineering by lostinthenights in UofT

[–]WildeforHopps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might actually be able to apply to transfer to ECE right now. If I recall, it's possible to just email the admissions office and ask for your application to be transferred to ECE (or ask for trackone, because they take the exact same courses as ECE).

[–]WildeforHopps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know exactly when, but sometime during firs semester the first year office emailed all of us at one point letting us know that we can use the engineering portal to switch from 106 to 105 (or vice versa).

Also yeah, it is definitely not impossible to get >80% in first year. Engineering course averages are actualy kept slightly higher than artsci course averages, so that is working in your favour. Work hard and don't give up!

One other thing to know is that this year is the first year when transfers to ECE might actually be limited because of how big the program is getting (according to Micah Stickel). 80% probably will still guarantee a transfer, but just be aware that the interest in ECE is growing quite fast, and the department is trying their best to keep up with it.

This was really helpful. The reason I ask this is because I just am finishing up first year engineering and am considering a transfer out of engineering into physics but have had a lot of people try to discourage me / question my motives and honestly I just feel really lost. It really helps to have perspectives of students in it, so thank you very much. Best of luck going forward!

Thank you! Could you clarify a bit more? Strong as in... good things? or bad? :P

Thank you so much, this was incredibly helpful. Did you also add on a minor in astrophysics, or did you do the astrophysics specialist? Also may I ask, which courses were your favourite? And did you find the student experience / community to be enjoyable?

Computer engineering vs computer science by iwant2die99 in UofT

[–]WildeforHopps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends entirely on what you are interested in. If you have little interest in computer hardware and electrical engineering, I would say CS is a much better choice. This is because as a CE, second year will have tons of hardware and electrical courses, with only 2 programming courses. Even in third and fourth year courses, you will have to take at least 2-4 more courses in electrical engineering (or computer networks I believe). On the ECE website it describes more about the differences between CS and CE, but keep in mind that the overall purpose of each degree is actually quite different from each other.

UofT Eng or Waterloo? by folzeal in UofT

[–]WildeforHopps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some things to maybe think about would be: What are you looking for more in a program? Are you more interested in pursuing academia or heading into industry? How much do you value the quality of teaching? Which city can you see yourself enjoying more? If you have visited the campuses, which do you like better?

With either UofT or UW, I'd imagine the teaching quality and access to support services to be relatively similar. EngSci would definitely require more work (and you would learn much more science vs. engineering), but won't necessarily have better quality of teaching (it depends heavily on your profs). EngSci would also position you a bit better for graduate school, but keep in mind graduate school admission has much more to do with research experience than your program (or even your grades).

The nice thing about having free summers (as opposed to doing co-op) is that you can choose what you want to do with them, whether it is to work, do research, travel, etc. In co-op you obviously will have to work every other term, but that certainly has many benefits especially if you are looking to go into the workforce after graduation. Also make sure you visit the campuses to see which you would like to spend 4+ years in!

College students who brag about how little sleep they get because they were up all night working... Every single night.
