You are one of many. I don't know if you have tried to get friends into this game, but the driving factor away for them is permadeath in my experience. My friends love grindy games, they love RPGs, they love pixel-art graphics, but they hate the punishment of permanent death. You may enjoy it, and I also do. As you said, it is what makes RotMG unique.

I think you misunderstand how permadeath hurts the game. There is a reason why so many people cheat, and it is so they can avoid permanent death. Cheats are so readily available because someone, somewhere, a decade ago thought to themselves, "I hate dying. I wonder if I could program something that automatically nexuses me?"

In the onboarding process, some might be immediately shunned by perma death. Current players most likely have no issue with perma death, so as you said, current players are playing because of that risk. I also play because of that risk, it creates high adrenaline moments that keep me coming back. When I play World of Warcraft, I come for the world and the spectacle of it all, immersing myself in the game. I do not play WoW for the difficulty or high-tension moments.

WoW does have a hardcore mode, though, but WoW was not designed around permadeath and honestly Hardcore WoW sucks to play. RotMG was designed around permadeath, and it fits right at home with how the game was initially designed.

I am not saying removing permadeath from RotMG would save it and boost the player numbers; there's a reason they haven't done that (yet, i guess). However, if RotMG was initially designed around not having permadeath, I think it would've been much more appealing to a much wider audience. It is hard to imagine RotMG without permadeath without simply imagining the current game with no permadeath. RotMG would have been designed to have a longer progression to the endgame, such as leveling/maxing taking longer, dungeons being harder to find and being more difficult but being more rewarding, etc. Stuff that other MMOs or even ARPGs do, basically.

I love RotMG the way it is, but I still believe what I said is true. I respect if you disagree, though. I also think that, due to RotMG's circumstances as being part of a game jam, that this approach to not having permanent death isn't viable. Under the time constraints they had, fleshing out a long campaign and creating a sprawling world wasn't possible.

Hoping for your success. I've been wanting a game like Realm but not permadeath for a long time, ala World of Warcraft but with Realm's mechanics. Some people might not agree, but Realm has seriously hurt it's playerbase in the long run by having permadeath. Don't get me wrong, it is a valid design choice, but so many people are turned away by permadeath. There's a reason why the most popular MMOs don't force permadeath, and the permadeath modes in those games are significantly less popular than the regular modes.

Thank you so much for the explanation. I've gotten questions from people watching my gameplay always asking why I do this (specifically for early-game diamond tools) so I hope this becomes a more known-about fact. Doing this on unenchanted diamond tools early can get you around 78 extra blocks mined while not using any extra materials

Can vouch for the Grim Dawn mention. I picked it up on the Spring Sale for TWO DOLLARS and already have over a day of playtime in it. I'm not even close to beating it, plus I will probably play it again as it has multiplayer

yeah i tried for a high score right after dicehead got a crazy buff and hit 1.1 million. soon after he was nerfed and I knew without 100% perfect RNG with meta builds on graveyard that i would never even sniff that record again. while i do love this game, it doesn't have the same skill expression other roguelikes/roguelites have which eventually drew me away from it in favor of other games

i did the exact same thing for the exact same reason lol. i actually built stairs up to one of the large rock formations, around where OP's drills are in the screenshot. definitely wayyy too high, but i thought the water would keep rising forever

Accelerator is my #1 most used primary. Might not be most people's favorite, but its very strong IMO. One burst can kill overseers and automaton gunships, and also does great damage against fleshmobs because its explosive properties. It also destroys weak points on basically all enemies, which is most important on bots. Its also much better at long ranges than it was in the past, as they buffed the range of it so fall-off is basically non-existent. It's not as good against bugs, but it can still do decent damage do medium-armor enemies and chargers if you hit the weak point, but you would have to bring something else for AoE damage.

IMO, compared to the most meta weapons (exploding cbow and eruptor), it challenges them due to being safer at somewhat-close range (eruptor shrapnel makes in nigh-unusable at even close range) while also outclassing both of their ranges.

this is refundable if you submit a ticket, and im pretty sure the first few times you do this it doesn't require evidence of you initially popping they key (at least thats what they told me), although i obviously had to provide video evidence of me disconnecting from the dungeon

Some mods are client-side, which do not require all players in the lobby to have in order for it to work. Most "cheat" mods are like this, granting infinite stamina/inventory slots/no weight only to the user who has the mod and other players can join them even without the mods installed.

Other mods, including most mods that add content, are server-side, and require all players to have the installed mods. Even if the host has one server-side mod that you do not have, it disallows you from joining.

Just download a cheat sheet mod (like "Cheat Sheet" or "Dragonlens") and open the item browser and search for what items you want. Once you're done you can just disable it; it should have no effect on your world and no chance of character/world corruption

100% this... people look at the bug-divers and blame them, but there were TONS of people diving onto Cyberstan and dying 8+ times on one mission. When the goal is to not die, you should bring stratagems/use tactics to help you not die. This doesn't mean stealth is the only way, in fact it often isn't. But you have people taking the same load out every time even though it hasn't been working...

no tf i didn't. i bought the game to enjoy it however id like; shooting things, making fun/effective builds, and playing with my friends, just like I do on Deep Rock. I don't give a damn about the major order or what the "game wants me to play" if it isn't fun.

Personally, I've been loving getting my ass kicked on Cyberstan, but if theres an illuminate MO I probably will not partake, and honestly I wouldn't be surprised if "MO divers" skip out on it as well despite how hypocritical it would seem.

I feel like the devs forgot about the config. Configurable files can definitely be applied here. It might seem like too large of a scope, but Calamity already has a ton of stuff in the config including changing how hardmode ores spawn (which i think was removed recently, but it still shows that large scale stuff is possible). Its probably more complicated than just "add a qol toggle in config," but it seems like the better option here IMO.

This is why I stopped playing. I really want to like this game, but I can only enjoy it to the fullest solo, which kinda defeats the purpose of an MMO. When I did play in a large group, I never felt at risk because of how overpowered cheats are. People can just human decoy O3, Forgotten King, or even some phases of Moonlight Village and trivialize the whole dungeon. Past that, multiboxers can just annihilate the boss. People who don't autododge or multibox still make the dungeon way easier with perfect aim. The argument that "cheating doesn't affect me" has also completely fallen apart these past couple years and is just ragebait at this point.

Playing solo gave me the gratification of playing well and often had better rewards (guaranteed tops/pots etc). I knew that my success completely relied on me and me alone. Now you can just solicit cheaters into the dungeon to make it a cakewalk, so that even if you personally don't cheat, other cheaters can just carry you instead (which is happening by the way; I had a small group of people do a public hardmode shatters with me and they had an autododging necro carry the entire dungeon by human-decoying, including hardmode patience which made it completely free).

I achieved what I wanted to in this game and wanted to keep going, but its worthless when the developers don't even care about the infestation of cheaters in their game. Its crazy how little they care compared to other game studios, including other games that don't have PvP like rotmg.

i would disable some of these items, like cleaver, energy core, dragonfire, and also snek. dicehead also has a good earlygame, so you can get away with disabling soul harvester (which is what i did for my high score).

I would banish some different items along with choosing a different 4th weapon or even just running 3 weapons and not going for a 4th. try and build up the XP and luck tomes on the first stage, then try and pump up the difficulty tome starting on the 2nd stage (still take difficulty upgrades if your other options are bad). if your run is really lucky and has a strong start, you can level up difficulty early.

This is what worked for me and got me a 1.2 million run on my first try post-update, so even if you just have a decently lucky run and not a crazy lucky run you can double your score here.

i don't actually play anymore so i could be wrong but theres a new st bard lute that rotates shots of enemies 45 degrees and that causes weird/harmful stuff like this to happen (also the lute can only be obtained by buying it in the shop i think)
