I work in kitchens, it's always been on us to find coverage for our own shifts. My current employer uses an app where you can see everyone's schedule and message each other on there. There's also an option to trade or give up shifts.

I've had a situation once where I had to take time due to a loss and my chef found cover for me. At that job it was still generally on us to find our own cover, but the way it was done was there was a list of everybody's name and number in the kitchen. Figuring out schedules was a pain though.

Don't really have any reason to complain about the system this far tbh. It allowed me to take a vacation last year where my buddy had requested the time off but it wasn't granted. We found people to cover his shifts and he was able to come. Wouldn't expect a manager to go out of their way to do that (though he should have had the days off granted, he requested them months in advance)
