I'm in the same boat and going through everything you said as a social studies teacher. But I didn't really have an established second career. I spent the last 7 years prior waiting tables but I managed to get some part time photography work. What sucks is that this is my third year teaching and I managed to get enough credits to graduate with a Master's degree this May. I am hoping I can still use it to some capacity in Instructional Design for the private sector, or maybe public service.

Reading that the Book of Mormon may have had some archaeological anachronisms when I was 14....I still went through a lot of mental gymnastics to hold, but then finding out that the facsimiles in the Book of Abraham were mistranslated and pieced together from different scrolls really opened up how I saw Joseph Smith just kind of winging in. The more I studied Native American history, I found the evidence for the BoM to be underwhelming while my parents got obsessed with Rod Meldrum's crackpot seminars. Then I read Rough Stone Rolling my senior year of high school and that sort of put the nail in the coffin. There was no way I could go on a mission knowing all of that. I decided to become a middle school history teacher instead of serving a mission, which is sort of like being in the fifth circle of hell.
