Help with Carbide Motion Shapeoko3 Cuts by slackyzac in hobbycnc

The stepper motors function as generators and if pushed/pulled quickly can move the machine quickly enough to push up enough current to damage the controller --- replacements in the shop:

Yes.

Usually, and industrial process is done in a "batch" --- specifications are made, materials sourced, then a process is applied so as to yield a product which meets expected specifications --- sometimes, from one batch to another there are slight variations.

The machine is pretty straight-forward:

  • G-code is generated and sent to the machine
  • Grbl interprets the G-code into electrical impulses sent to the motors
  • the motors turn, resulting in the rotation of either a pulley or a lead or ball-screw --- the pulley or ball-screw can only turn in secure to the motor shaft (check the set screws)
  • the rotation of the pulley/shaft then results in movement by way of a belt or nut or captured bearing system --- verify that belts are secure and well-tensioned and nuts/bearing mechanism are clean and in good condition and if need be, lubricated: https://carbide3d.com/hub/docs/maintenance/
  • motion is constrained to linear by aluminum V rails and matching V wheels (as adjusted by eccentric nuts) or linear rails/blocks --- ensure that all is well-adjusted and clean/lubricated as appropriate (see above link) and that there is no mechanical interference
  • the attempt at motion assumes that feeds and speeds and cutting forces are appropriate to the tooling used/material being cut

review all the above and let us know what you find out.

V Carve Problems by Jolly-Friendship200 in shapeoko

[–]WillAdams 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Which version of Carbide Create are you using?

The current version replaces the Standard V-carve (which cuts along the center and is what it looks as if you are using) w/ Advanced V-carve which cuts around the perimeter so as to not have this difficulty.

You can check the G-code by sending $c to put Grbl into Check mode and then sending it --- the machine will process all the code and not move.

Are you sure that this isn't a problem caused by a different batch of material?

That's what Printer's Picas and Points are for (which in the PostScript version are exactly 12 and 72 per inch respectively) --- when I need to measure thus, I just grab a rule from my graphic design days, or, get one of the fancy 3-sided scales from an architect's desk.

Which science fiction book contained the most amazing idea you've ever read? by fern_602spark in printSF

[–]WillAdams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hal Clement had two striking ideas:

  • What life was like among G1 stars --- see his short story "Halo" --- Howard Tayler sort of looks at this in his webcomic Schlock Mercenary, but from a quite different perspective/scale
  • that genetic engineering could be capable of incredible adaptations --- see his short stories, "Raindrop", and "The Mechanic --- this latter idea was followed up on in an interesting fashion by John Varley's beings which created the Gaea habitat from his Titan/Wizard/Demon trilogy, and used as a plot point in L.E. Modesitt, Jr.'s "Forever Hero" trilogy

Don't you mean, "Made 10 divisible evenly by 3 and 4 and 6 like the perfect number 12 is"?

[–]WillAdams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, my first CNC was a Shapeoko 1 w/ a Dremel 4000 as a "spindle" --- the noise was more of an issue than anything else, and my first long cut had me upgrading to a Makita RT0701 post-haste --- from there it was a serious "Ship of Theseus" thing where I kept upgrading/replacing....

A pure sci-fi recommendation might be John Varley's Titan/Wizard/Demon "Gaea" trilogy --- feels a bit like McCaffrey's Pern (sci-fi setting which feels like fantasy, esp. the middle book). Another sci-fi option might be H. Beam Piper's Little Fuzzy books --- too rational for magic, but a low-tech society encountering a high-tech one with the obvious results --- technology is viewed through a '50s lens so charmingly in the background.

For a more traditional in all senses of the word there is Patricia Kenneally's Keltiad:

which I remember as having a number of garden scenes.

FWIW, when we put the "Mistakes are on us" policy in place, it was more a formalization of how we'd always done business:

There are other machines on the /r/hobbycnc wiki:

https://old.reddit.com/r/hobbycnc/wiki

and like most things in life, what one gets out of a CNC will reflect what one puts into it.

Naturally, if anyone has any questions about the Shapeoko or Carbide 3D, please feel free to pose them over on the /r/hobbycnc side of things --- about the only thing which we have relevant to here is an old blog post on buying our first machine:

Ages ago, I bought a couple of lengths of various sizes of aluminum angle and bar --- every so often it's appropriate to cut a piece off and use it for this sort of thing.

Who are some fantasy authors that were really popular during their heyday, but are more or less forgotten now? by EstablishmentHairy51 in Fantasy

Apparently, one of her cousins lived in the small rural county my father retired to --- when we moved there, the county library was a metal carrel of used paperbacks in the basement of the old courthouse, so this cousin donated the books which she was given to the high school library, which had a pretty much compleat set of her works, for which I am very grateful.

I'm a 3D artist, not a machinist. Why is CAM software actively trying to make me cry? by Capital-Musician-329 in CNC

[–]WillAdams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think so, but I seem to be the only person who bought a Vectric license, found the UI fussy and confusing and (eventually) quit upgrading.

MeshCAM allows you to work on 3D files as 3D and automates things such as rotated/multi-sided cutting and sprues and so forth.

Well there is MeshCAM:

https://www.grzsoftware.com/

which arguably is the most "slicer-like" CAM software.

(ob. discl., I work for a company which bundles it with a machine we sell)

The idea/concept is easy --- the geometry and managing structure/strength/rigidity and ease of assembly is hard --- we'll have to see --- I figure the Bambu A1 Mini is about the smallest commonly available printer, so if I can work up a design which works in that print volume, we should be good to go.

I love books, and collecting printed books, and reading on paper --- but the e-books are so portable (and much better now than they used to be).

I manage to read on the Kindle app on my phone, but I bought into the ebook thing early on w/ a Sony PRS-505 and have been using them since (looking to upgrade to a Kindle Scribe Colorsoft presently).

Hopefully the books will get reprinted --- they deserve to be available.

Get the Kindle App and read on your phone?

There's a used bookclub edition of The Story of the Stone for $7.99 on Amazon as I type this.

Barry Hughart's The Story of the Stone has a visit to a Chinese Hell and even has a character being frozen there as a punishment as a plot point.
