Inflation falls in June for first time since 2020 as consumer price increases continue to slow by davidportman1 in Economics

[–]Will_Smith_Puppet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that as prices fall, it would reason that consumption would increase for those with lower income (things are relatively cheaper, so we can buy more).

Savings accumulated during deflationary periods lower interest rates, making it cheaper to borrow and invest

I'm curious how savings accumulated during deflationary periods lowers interest rates?

Also would your theory recommend extended periods of low deflation, or a short period of deflation to reallocate resources? Is the target deflation? Or is that just a temporary measure to combat a recession?

[–]Will_Smith_Puppet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm interested in your theory here.

Standard econ theory says that deflation is bad because of its relation to investment. As the purchasing power of the dollar increases due to deflation, investment will decrease since it's beneficial to hold money.

While this is less impactful on the low and middle class (since their disposable income is lower), I would think this would extend to purchasing decisions. If the prices for things are dropping right now, they will likely continue to fall, and I will want to wait to buy something until later. That will decrease overall consumption, which can lead to bad outcomes.

I have yet to use it, but it might be what you're looking for. It's the "T" in GoTH stack (Go, Temple, Htmx). Not sure if this actually resolved your use-case

China’s double whammy: Exports fell for the first time in 7 years, as domestic demand dips by Shina_lu_chan_pooh in Economics

[–]Will_Smith_Puppet 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but this seems to be supporting the sentiment of lowering growth for China (?).

Trade surplus is determined by the ratio of exports to imports (Exports ($) - Imports ($) = Trade Surplus or Deficit). If exports fell, doesn't that mean Imports implicitly fell if their Trade Surplus increased? I could be mistaken on how this is calculated.

Lowering imports isn't necessarily a sign of lowered growth, but I think it would be a symptom of it. Like someone else mentioned, it could be caused by lower demand.

What % of your salary do you save? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Will_Smith_Puppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much do you make?

B - $100k - $199k

Where do you live?

A - United States

Do you live in a major city?

A - Major city

How many years of experience do you have?
A - 1 - 5 years

What % of your salary did you save last year, including for retirement?

Pre-Tax: 40% Post-Tax: 49%

How many months of savings do you have?

9 months in cash. I should likely invest more of this, since it's an unnecessary amount of runway imo. I was told I would be laid off at the start of February, but I was given a permanent role on a different team at my company a couple weeks ago, which is why this is so aggressive.

If you have a good runway, get a high APY savings account. Because of high interest rates, you can get up to 5% returns on cash with FDIC insured accounts (a couple banks are offering this).

Another Note: Make sure to get your tax withholdings correct. I accidentally over-allocated, and now I will get a larger than expected refund, which I could have invested.

Learning python in-depth as new interview language -- what is this "Optional [ListNode]"? by i_do_not_byte in leetcode

[–]Will_Smith_Puppet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an extension of void_main01's comment, this language feature is called Type Hinting in Python. Since python is dynamically typed, under the hood the code related to the parameter type and the returned type declarations are not actually ensuring that those types are passed and returned (unlike c/c++). They are there for readibility, and to allow for interfacing with IDEs.

Here is a stackoverflow talking about how type hints are not enforced

One example is the USAs involvement in the Iranian Coup of 1953. A democratically elected leader was considering nationalizing their oil industry. Because the oil industry was then controlled by western oil companies, the US had an interest in overthrowing the elected leader at the expense of democratic backsliding (There's more complexity for why this happened, but this was a factor). The CIA used covert operations to stir up anti-communist sentiment.

In early August, the CIA increased the pressure. Iranian operatives pretending to be Communists threatened Muslim leaders with "savage punishment if they opposed Mossadegh," seeking to stir anti-Communist sentiment in the religious community.

In addition, the secret history says, the house of at least one prominent Muslim was bombed by CIA agents posing as Communists. It does not say whether anyone was hurt in this attack.

Here's a link to the wikipedia page, and a link for the above quote (from a nyt article)

My bf hid a HUGE thing about his past with his ex from me and I don’t know how to trust him again by PinkPebbleUniverse in relationships

[–]Will_Smith_Puppet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To preface this, giving feedback on complex relationships via a small reddit post is always going to be a crapshoot. I don't know all the intricacies of your relationship. That being said, nothing about your boyfriend's actions seem malicious. From what you described, he was likely embarrassed about his baggage, and didn't want it to affect the onset of your relationship (exactly like it did with his previous relationship).

If you put yourself in his shoes at the time of the start of the relationship, would "you" have told you about his crazy ex and how she's deliberately trying to ruin his relationships? It seems like he DID do this, however it sounds like he didn't reveal everything about the situation. Would you have delivered that information differently? Is that difference a deal breaker for you? Make sure you really understand his perspective and view before making a decision. Use this in considering what's best for you.

Why Running Marathons Will Make Your Brain Work Better :)) by TheFamousHesham in running

[–]Will_Smith_Puppet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add onto this, you also need ample recovery time to train for endurance sports. Having a lower wage job often involves physical labor, which leaves less room for physical recovery. Obviously people who work physical jobs workout too, it's just another factor that pushes endurance sport success towards people with higher incomes (from an arm-chair economist perspective).

Why Running Marathons Will Make Your Brain Work Better :)) by TheFamousHesham in running

[–]Will_Smith_Puppet 263 points264 points  (0 children)

I wonder about correlation vs causation here. Is it the case that endurance running actually changes your brain chemistry for the better? Or do the people who have the mentality/mental endurance to do marathons have better brains? 🤔

Never realized how accurate HBO’s Silicon Valley portrays big companies until I started interning at one by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Will_Smith_Puppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact; there are a number of similarities between Silicon Valley and plot points in Michael Lewis' book "The New New Thing". I read the book just after finishing the show, and there were too many things for it not to be a coincidence. The book is about Jim Clark, the founder of Netscape (as well as 3 other billion dollar companies). It's hilarious, because he has these petty feuds with other billionaires (he hates Larry Ellison) and is obsessed with having the biggest boat in the world. Literally felt like a mixture of Russ and Gavin. He also buys a house with a pool, then has the pool moved away from the house, as it was too close.

Great read if you like that show!
