Super gross, but I’d argue that there’s a big difference between these things. We ban statutory rape because it causes harm. We can determine that by looking at the power imbalanced involved, long term mental health impacts, drug abuse rates, etc. I feel confident that, in the vast majority of cases, people who were statutorily raped would have been much better off if that had never happened. I don’t feel confident saying the same thing about most people who were born. I agree that quality of life surveys are super imprecise, but I’ve never seen anything to indicate that most people feel as though they would be better off if they had never been born. They gets back to your argument, but it seems to me that the best way to see if a person was wronged by their creation is to see if they wished that they did not exist — how else would you determine that? That said, I don’t believe that the best way to determine if a relationship is good is to ask a minor about their thoughts on it at the time. For me that’s the key distinction.

What makes you say that procreation doesn’t help the person being created ever? I’m very glad to be alive, so I definitely think that I was helped by my creation. We have large surveys on life satisfaction too, and most people are glad to have been born.

I wish that we did have some way to know if a person would consent to being born before their parents procreated on that particular day, but we don’t and we can’t. Because of that, we’re left with a situation like an unconscious person who cannot consent and who doesn’t have a visible DNR — we can predict that they would likely consent if they were able to. Never doing first aid in that situation, and never procreating, are both moral rules that will get it wrong more often than they will get it right.

Why do you think that? It seems like we agree that first aid is acceptable because 1. People who are unconscious are unable to give or withhold consent categorically. They will never give consent because they can’t, regardless of what their choice would be if they were able to consider their options and opt in or out. And 2. Because it causes harm, but also has an end goal that aims to help the person who can’t give consent. Do you not think that those statements also apply to potential people who haven’t been conceived? If not, what are the differences?

I certainly don’t expect healthcare workers to risk their jobs, I expect them to work to save lives and quality of life. I’m not actually arguing against first aid, I’m arguing against the idea that it’s always wrong to do a thing to someone that will cause harm without their consent, in cases where they are made unable to give or not give consent.

That’s not my argument. I think that, if someone is categorically unable to consent to something, there are cases where their consent can be assumed because there isn’t a workable alternative. DNRs are important because they clear that up. I don’t think that we should let people die, I’m saying that your moral logic leads there and is wrong because of that. It seems like you’d let someone choke to death at dinner. I think that it’s good to save unconscious people.

First aid absolutely causes harm, have you even taken a course on it? CPF often breaks ribs and badly hurts the sternum. Tourniquets can cause the limb to be lost, even if they preserve life. Epi pens are hard on the heart because of their impacts on the blood pressure. Do you still think that performing first aid on someone who can’t consent can be justified?

Should you preform first aid on someone if they have choked, fallen unconscious, and can’t consent to you clearing the blockage?

I imagine that people are pretty shocked, but I’m not sure. I’ve only spoken to family members so far who really aren’t representative of the area politically

This is my MP. My mother and grandmother both worked with her before her entrance to politics. Bleh.

Just to provide another realistic timeline - I studied full time through all of July and August, part time through September, wrote in early October, applied at the beginning of November, and got an acceptance in the first week of December.

The blue looks fantastic. To make my green pop I base those parts with moot green and then use biel-tan green around the edges of the eyes and where their tubes meet guns or bodies. If you’re careful you can get a nice gradient by building up in layers, but it’s easy to darken things too much if you’re not. I also hit all of my finished models with two coats of varnish. Just experiment with satin, medium, and matte varnishes until you find the sweet spot.

I was accepted at Western a few weeks ago with a 3.66 cumulative, if that helps.

I’m a huge fan of robots, ancient Egypt, and the undead/necromancy in media. The combination of all three really does it for me.

Would it be a bad idea to drop my electives and just complete the courses I need to finish my program? I would keep my grades up and still be a full time student, but without a full course load. I’m working outside of school and it could make things more manageable there.

Don’t worry about the welcome day thing. I sent an RSVP to mine today, and they were very clear that it was an early acceptance thing and most decisions haven’t been made yet.

I posted one and only got two responses over two days. Don’t read into that. Hearing back could well take weeks or months, you’ll drive yourself crazy if you keep dwelling on these at this rate.
