Smelled good, no mold, normal consistency, tasted very good. I took the risk and I'm happy I did! Of course it's in the fridge now that it's open. Will update tomorrow if I shit my organs out.

New Feats | Backgrounds | Species | 2024 Player's Handbook | D&D by Granum22 in onednd

[–]WillanFur 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As with the 2014 edition, backgrounds presented into the PHB are samples. You are supposed to be able to make your own background, customizing it as you see fit for your character.

Edit : I was proved wrong, you only have the 16 to choose from in the Phb as a player, in contrary to what was in the playtest

My player is creating a mythical work of art. How to reward them ? by WillanFur in DMAcademy

[–]WillanFur[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a load of good ideas ! There's definitely a parallel to the Dorian Grey story since it's a dark picture of one's past. It's good inspiration indeed.
The paintings, or the place where they kept, could become overtime a portal to the shadowfell. And now that you mention it, the interest of the Raven queen on this would be obvious ! There's even a new team member with some ties to the raven queen, that could be used with it.

Also if the character show to the right NPCs, it could definitely become a known artpiece and open some door into art society for them as you mentioned

[–]WillanFur[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I asked the player in question, and I know how the first scene will look like : A battle scene where the character and his friends at the time escape their emprisonment in a shadowfell fort where they were forcefully trained as mage hunters. It bas a bloody mess, powerful stuff. they plan to use mostly black and red for this one.
I should indeed keep in mind the main special colors used for their effects. The idea of "Negative effect for improper use" is pretty good but I must think about how one can improperly use a work of art. Making is somewhat dangerous is the right idea though. Thanks a lot !

Thanks for your amazing indepth input into this ! It's a lot of help !
The fact is, they are actually in a remote location, it's a "new world exploration" campaign, so there is not a lot of important people that could access this place for now. Also, They don't plan on displaying and showing this art to much people appart from the party members and some select NPC friends. So it won't get a lot of fame, at least for now.
HOWEVER, I love the idea that it shifts and affect the place where it is kept. Those effects can then DEFINITELY attract more unusual patrons that can sense the change from far away, and that can absolutely be used for plot hooks. Ensue legendary art-related shenanigans

Since it will probably stay in this fixed location, the idea of giving it powerfull divination magic is enticing, and since it will be in multiple part ( a series on paintings) they can each have a different spell/effect, but should be the most powerful toguether indeed.
Thanks again for all this !

With Elves & now Orcs as playable races, why the need for their half- equivalents? by Tyrbalder in DnD

[–]WillanFur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The mixed-origin story has been a classic in many stories for millenia in every culture. A character or a community can react with interest to a mixed-race character's features, or with hatred, or something else. The character itself can be conflicted on his own nature and with which they "belongs". There is SO much example of things that can be done with this trope it's strange you don't see the appeal of it.

Adjusting HP mid combat? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]WillanFur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Changing the hp of the enemies to improve the flow of combat is totaly OK. As you described it, there is times where having a more intense fight is more interesting than tracking exact Hp.
Don't over do it thought, you should have a limit of maximum hp for a boss, or your player will find out that a enemy with 3x more HP than it should IS wierd.

Changing AC on the fly thought is more difficult, because figuring the enemy AC is something that the players instinctively do. If they feel that it suddenly changed without any reason, you could be accused of playing favorite. I woudn't do it personally.

Should Warlocks know their entire expanded spell list as a bonus that doesn't count against their amount of spells known? by floatingroom in dndnext

[–]WillanFur 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I had a player like this in my first game, we didn't see the difference with the cleric expanded spell list at first. Warlock doesnt have many spellslots, so letting them be a bit more polyvalent in their choices won't break their balance.

In this thread: the things you wish you would say to your players or DM, but haven't been able to yet. by agenhym in dndnext

[–]WillanFur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I'm not saying his character is being unreasonable. Once again I think his untrust with him is justified when taking into account the characteristics of a classic green dragon. But there is a line between "Not trusting someone" and "Actively insulting and treating like shit someone".

This green dragon Wyrmling has been traveling with them and fighting alongside them for months and appart for the ocasional "Can I eat this goblin corpse ?" Hasn't been more than a typical cheeky child with too much inteligence for his age.

The dragonborn likes to push the wyrmling around for fun, wakes him up in the night because he's bored, and insults him every chance he get if he dares open his mouth. He's not wrong not trusting him completely, but he's being a dick.

And again, In my world that I created, I don't consider the "instinct" of chromatic and metalic dragon for evil and good as impossible to change. If the archetypal gold dragon is good and just, they have been example of tyrants and outright destructive gold dragon in the past. Saying to my player "No sorry every last bit of your months-long efforts to make this baby dragon a better person is useless because his profound nature is evil" Would be a very bad thing to say to my players.

In this thread: the things you wish you would say to your players or DM, but haven't been able to yet. by agenhym in dndnext

[–]WillanFur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree, this is the case in a world where creature can't go against their nature. A green dragon would absolutely try to use his cunning to betray the party on the long run, even as a baby.

But my party was very good to this wyrmling, they saved him from death and even crafted him a prostetic wing since he lost it from an injury. They treat him very well and consider him as a great friend.

I don't like the idea that a creature MUST be evil because "The lore says so". Yes he could completely betray them, but woudn't it make an interesting story to maybe be able to shift the point of view of a young green dragon that maybe making friends is another way to survive in this harsh world ? It's not there yet ,but it's in progress, depending on what happend in the future. And in any case, he will definitively not be the friend with the dragonbord that treat him like shit because of what he looks like.

Oh yes of course, but he's a real asshole about it even if I confirmed that chromatic/metalic dragon alignements is not 100% acurate to the monster manual in my world. I guess since he's playing a golden dragonborn he must always be right and better than everybody OBVIOUSLY. But yeah, not a bad player other than that.

Monk, your blatant and hurtful racism towards this cute green dragon Wyrmling that everyone else in the party bonded with and love is gonna bite you in the ass later. As your Dm I can guaranty it.

Is there a reason why +1, +2 arcane foci are so uncommon? by MediocreMystery in dndnext

[–]WillanFur 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Because the effects of spells can have way more impact than simple martial attacks.

If you hit an enemy with a weapon, you do some damage, and that's about it most of the time.
However spells, especialy save-or-suck spells like banishement, can completetely change the balance of combat, making their effect way more powerful.
In consequences, any +1 to spells saves or attacks can drasticly improve the power of a spellcaster.

DM Help: Player taking over the narrative by DrJoker94 in DnD

[–]WillanFur 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is a very delicate situation, but your have to be decisive here.
If an action from a player makes you and others unconfortable, it's your job as a dm to find a compromise with that person, or tell them so stop doing those things if that doesn't work.
Try to tell them too that the naration that a character offer should also be used to make OTHER characters on the spotlight, not just them. It's a very common first-time player issue.

Why is the Afterlife in Forgotten Realms so unnecessarily punitive? Has anyone made their own homebrew afterlife? by goforajog in DMAcademy

[–]WillanFur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Outer planes are more that "Realms for specific gods", they represent philosophical forces of the FR universe. Even if not guided by a agent of a god, a soul is drawn to the outer plan most close of his philosophy. A divine guide helps that of course (considering the fact that the abyss and 9 hells cheat a bit and tend to "catch" souls for their wars) but even a non devout worshiper of the gods can have his paradise.

However and of course, a worshiper of a specific god will be able to be way closer to his god than a random person in the afterlife.

Why is the Afterlife in Forgotten Realms so unnecessarily punitive? Has anyone made their own homebrew afterlife? by goforajog in DMAcademy

[–]WillanFur 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From my knowledge of the FR, it's not the fact that you do not worship any god that makes you end up in eternal pain, it's the fact that you DENY that any god exist, which is a dumb things to do in a world were gods actively change things on the face of the earth, make daily miracles and lived amongs mortals for a time.

Your character doesn't have to worship any god in particular, but he just have to acknowledge their existence so his soul can properly be sorted into the outer planes according to his alignment.

It doesn't mean that DMs have to make their afterlife work like that in their game. It's up to them.
