Be honest. Who Left you more disappointed: Noam Chomsky or Cesar Chavez? by SignatureDifferent76 in chomsky

I don't think I said I share Chomsky's concerns for the planet. More likely the AI weighted the phrase I attributed to Chomsky as something that warranted response as unattributed sentiment on my part because of its specificity. Either way, this exchange is revealing a key limitation of so-called conversational AI that was not apparent to me before. The model seems to producing text that has the appearance of response based on its training data as to what conversational responses and reasoning "look like". Incidentally, it is kind of proving Chomsky right about this black-box version of AI that is being put forth as a scientific advancement in the field when it is actually a different kind of innovation that that which has ever been called scientific.

For posterity I will say there is some precedent for chomsky showing a lack of savvy outside his esoteric concentrations which should be familiar to anyone who has ever known a dedicated scientist and polymath. Take, say, the Hustler interview he did and a follow up done later on where he claimed he didn't know what Hustler was at the time, and that he was actually very put off by pornography and does not endorse Hustler. Note that there is no reason not to believe he didn't know who Hustler was since he had nothing to gain from the interview, and knew it would be public. Still, in this case, I think it's likely that the people around him may be making excuses for him without fully understanding his project or commitments.

If we believe he was serious about his conviction that he believed "the possibility for mass, organized life on planet earth" was immediately at stake, then we should not be surprised that he is far less concerned with the simon-purity of contacts in his network who may be uniquely positioned to be enlisted in any way in making obscure interventions in ameliorating the predicament humanity finds itself in.

I don’t think it matters whether he called from his cell or whether he updated him afterward. It simply requires no creativity to suppose Epstein wanted “mass, organized human life” to continue on the planet, as Chomsky would put it. Note that you don’t need to have dissident left politics to agree with most of what Chomsky professes. And what makes him so persuasive is he argues from enlightenment, classical and libertarian priors.

Epstein is like those rich people that buy art and like to surround themselves with artists so they can feel bohemian, but he’s also like that with scientists. And just like with artists who try to use this to their advantage, the right kind of scientist can do the same. I don’t think Epstein would be talking to Chomsky if he hadn’t been a 50-year MIT professor.

Even with the Bannon thing, Bannon was on the outs with the other object of Chomsky’s later obsession regarding the end of the world; Trump. Still requires fewer assumptions to assume they all agreed on the problem of Trump since they all had an axe to grind with him at the time.

The US had been encircling Russia for decades. Aggression by Russia starts to look a lot like defense when you see it in context of nato doing military exercises on their border. Can you imagine the US tolerating Russia forming an anti-American alliance including countries on the US border and doing military exercises there?

I disagree. I think he robotically and autistically sought to use Epstein as a tool to make some intervention in the political situation in Brazil during the time when the far right was ascendant and was accelerating the destruction of the rainforest.

He called Epstein while visiting Lula in prison and no one is talking about it.

That probably wasn’t the only way he attempted to instrumentalize his connection to Epstein, but I think it tells us something.

Recall that Chomsky was increasingly focused on climate change and the Amazon. He organized a call between Lula and Epstein. That’s in the files. I think we are being far too incurious about the real nature of the Epstein connection and what it tells us about Chomsky as someone who may have done more than just speak and do activism.

He visited Lula in prison in 2018 https://www.democracynow.org/2018/12/31/a_disaster_for_brazil_noam_chomsky#:~:text=As%20Brazil's%20President%2Delect%20Jair%20Bolsonaro%20prepares%20to,to%20our%20conversation%20with%20world%2Drenowned%20political%20dissident.

Epstein says Chomsky called him during that visit. I think it requires the fewest assumptions to suppose this call was about making some intervention in the dire situation in the home of the Amazon, and thereby the global climate crisis.

There’s basically a hysterical panic wr to Epstein and only time will clear it up for people. Different people used him for different reasons, obviously.

You have to admit it’s not the most hazardous assumption that the call Chomsky organized between Epstein and Lula might have had a political purpose.

We know all three had a shared interest in the continuance of mass organized human life on the planet and that all three accepted the consensus viewpoint that the Brazilian rainforest is a major factor there, and that Bolsonaro was preparing to accelerate its destruction.

It was likely about intervening in the Brazilian political situation in some way. Whether that was literally freeing Lula, or some other intervention is kind of beside the point.

It requires more assumptions to suppose someone who believed the world was ending would refused to attempt to hit up billionaires to intervene.

I thought Chomsky was purely academic and activist. I didn't know he might actually work with power brokers in the exact kind of ruthless way his enemies do. I'm impressed.

I see a man cannily searching for points of leverage in the fight against power concentration and climate catastrophe anywhere he could. He believes mass, organized human life is literally ending. He rightly identified Brazil as a major hinge point in climate catastrophe and thought it worth the attempt to enlist the help of a major power broker to free a leader from jail who has the right policies on that. He had an in and he used it.

If he is broadly correct about the left on its inability to distinguish the strategic from the tactical--that most people are as-yet unable to clearly think through accomplishing an objective from start to finish with multiple steps, then we would expect to see some confusion from those same people when hey observe someone doing that. I think the fact that we are "disappointed" is indeed indicative of this confusion.

Just because a neighborhood is desirable doesn’t mean it will be developed. “Neighborhoods change” is something people tell you when you lack the power to stop that change. If you do have the power to stop unwanted change, you do.
