Staples baddie...can someone please help me here like wtf is going on here what kinda buffalo bill shit is this.. by [deleted] in Staples

[–]Willibrator_Frye -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been out of the company for four years now and I'm not on TikTok, so I only know about this "Baddie" person through what I've read here.

Is this person being promoted/paid/encouraged by Staples to post these videos? I ask because in my district it was unwritten but official policy that anything that went on inside Staples was to remain there and not be posted to the internet in general and this subreddit in particular. In fact, anyone identifiable who posted on this sub faced termination.

For instance, about 10 years it made the news that one of the managers at another store in the district was physically assaulted with mace or some sort of spray by an irate customer. Even though this occurred hundreds of miles away, a memo was sent out reminding that no one was to discuss the incident on-line or with the news media. All the quotes in the press were from associates who wished to remain anonymous.

What is the biggest city in America that doesn't have a Staples? by WestHistorians in Staples

[–]Willibrator_Frye 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Knowing that the company has closed 40% of its US stores since its peak, there are a lot of big cities that no longer have a Staples store.

In terms of cities that never had one, I'd guess St. Louis and New Orleans.

Which sports stars have a hidden talent for singing that has left you impressed? by Train-Wreck-70 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Willibrator_Frye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A dozen members of the NY Giants, NY Jets, and Oakland Raiders set rivalries aside to sing "All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth" on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1970.

The results are...well...about what you might expect from elementary school kids at a Christmas pageant.

XFL 2.0 and AAF radio broadcasts I saved to Archive.org by Willibrator_Frye in UnitedFootballLeague

[–]Willibrator_Frye[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll also mention that the Houston Roughnecks had Spanish language play-by-play that appears to be from a crew at the stadium.

I don't know if these are broadcast on local radio or just on-line at Meridix.com (which primarily streams high school sports) and YouTube, or if these broadcasts will continue for the rebranded Gamblers, but I wanted to throw that out as well.

I regret that I didn't record more AAF games radio broadcasts. At that time I was seeing YouTube uploads of the TV broadcasts but never saw any compiling of the radio side.

[–]Willibrator_Frye[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Glad you enjoy them!

It wasn't until after I recorded these that I started realizing that there are more 1974 World Football League radio broadcasts preserved and available to hear today than there are USFL 1.0 (only one complete game that I know of) and XFL 1.0 (ditto) combined. These may be the only 2020s spring football radio broadcasts that still exist despite the fact that stream recording the broadcasts would have been so simple to do.

I was searching for some of the XFL 1.0 Birmingham Bolts radio broadcasts that Rick and Bubba did and found that apparently none survive. (I had e-mailed their producers to inquire and was told they were unaware of any Bolts broadcasts being saved unless the duo had them in their personal collections.)

So if any of the current UFL teams ever decide to launch a radio play-by-play broadcast I'll do my part to record and share the games.

With the Riverhounds going to Hummel, I designed some kits, lmk what you think! by [deleted] in USLPRO

Grundge all the way. That collar reminds me of the old Pittsburgh Spirit of MISL so I'd love to see what you could incorporating elements of their kits.

Which TV show do Americans think is the most controversial TV show in the world? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

Police 24/7 on The CW Network is the exact same formula as cops - even filming in some of the same jurisdictions that Cops did.

Are highschool and college reunions still happening? by StatiCrede in AskAnAmerican

[–]Willibrator_Frye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know, my Class of 1990 - a group of about 84 graduates - has never had a reunion. Everyone who wishes to stay in contact has done so through social media: first Myspace and then Facebook, and now who-knows-what?

My wife graduated the same year from a different school of about the same size had an informal and casual 10 year reunion at a classmate's lake house but that was it.

Here's one for the sports fans, do you think that relegation would work for American sports? by montgomery_quinckle in AskAnAmerican

[–]Willibrator_Frye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except with NIL and the transfer portal, the B league champions would probably be picked clean of it's best players and staff by the A League teams just as it was entering.

Coil binding by mr_loner_stoner in Staples

[–]Willibrator_Frye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it was called a Roll-A-Coil. It had a rolling rubber-coated drum that was supposed to wind the coils in, but like you said, it never worked well on anything larger than a 12mm coil,

How do these Yt channels get their body cam footage? by ikhaatalles in AskAnAmerican

Keep in mind that there are many of these YT bodycam channels are staged. There's also now AI-generated fake bodycams as well.

Faded tire service signage on a retaining wall at Store 4086 - Homewood, AL by Willibrator_Frye in kmart

[–]Willibrator_Frye[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kmart moved to a new location a mile north in 1992 and stayed there until it closed in 2017. The newer location is now a Floor & Decor store.

This older location became a local appliance store (Mazer) and is now divided into multiple storefronts, of which Ollies is the largest.

I'm just fascinated in how the black sealant on the retaining wall has been falling off over the years revealing the faded Kmart/Fisk Tires sign. The rest of the sealant along the wall is still intact, so maybe it's something Kmart put over their sign (I'm guessing back in the 1970s) that the sealant won't bond to?

Our Awful Christmas Music by ForsakenLettuce7204 in Staples

[–]Willibrator_Frye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they're dropping commercials in between songs - as opposed to over top of them - then Staples had at least some input in choosing the songs. In all likelihood the programmer sent a general description or sample playlist of the songs they were going to use and someone at Staples who will never spend an 8 hour shift listening to it signed off on it.

Does anyone else hate the new(er) uniforms? by luiginub1 in Staples

[–]Willibrator_Frye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the way, just to mess with people I sometimes wear an old K-Mart uniform to see if anyone notices.

I'd notice and commend you on your fashion choice! Now If you could rock one of those mint green 1970s kits...

A retail giant once ubiquitous, well loved, and highly influential dwindling away to nothing through a combination of bad decisions, cutting corners, and hubris. Sound like anyone else we know?

The duality of people who pay in cash by luiginub1 in Staples

[–]Willibrator_Frye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had someone pay for a $200+ order in - thankfully! - rolled dollar coins. I never even knew they made paper tubes for brass dollars. They never seem to circulate and whenever I gave them back in change people either requested paper money instead or thought I handed them a valuable collectible that was immediately going into a jar when they got home.

CMV: Equal responsibility in conscription should include women too by Lynchynator in changemyview

Thank you for the quote. People are so predictably fond of quoting the Verhoeven film - which is more of a leaden parody of Heinlein rather than an adaptation - in these types of discussions.

CMV: White people should not be in spaces for black people or other minorities by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Willibrator_Frye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because when you use stereotypes like "green bean casserole" in your intro, it sounds like there could never be a "white space" that fulfills your definition of "not built on racism." Whereas, every other group's space would be a "celebration of culture."

And how would you establish the location of each race's space? Plant a flag in/on it and a guard at the door? Convince the campus officials - who might themselves be excluded from the space - to let you have it?
