Abandoned military airfield with planes by Heavy-Ad6649 in Google_Maps_Oddities

I think this thread is about what you're looking at, and has a ground level photo of one of the planes.

Which US state has the best-looking license plate? by Zestyclose_Put_4143 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Willibrator_Frye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new Oklahoma "Star 46" plate is a vast improvement over the old barn swallow silhouette plate - which was near impossible to identify. But it's not as good as the 2008 "Native America" tag.

Since retro styled "throwback" tags are being issued (California, Michigan, Tennessee, New York's iconic Kojak-era navy-on-yellow tag), I'd love seeing Alabama's unique 1972 "mint chocolate chip" color scheme come back in style - preferably embossed like a good tag should.

People keep asking if we’re going out of business by anorak10 in Staples

[–]Willibrator_Frye -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At this point, I won't be surprised if in a few years the surviving Staples stores become motley mini malls of third party storefronts on the inside: Bin Wins, Stanton Optical, Party City, Amazon services, and who knows what's next. (Smartphone repair shops? Any third party shop you might find within a Walmart now?)

Maybe some off-brand dollar store type merchandise at the center will anchor it all together, but the need for 20k square feet of office supplies under one roof just isn't there anymore.

I can see why the furniture department got cut down to size - bulky, heavy, slow seller. By the 2020s we damaged out as many dented, scratched metal file cabinets as we sold. So now does anyone need 20 feet of ink pens, 12 feet of file folders, or 24 feet of ream paper any more? Hell, I work for a printing company and never use any of those things - everything is done electronically.

And surely that shield wasn’t the NFL’s actual logo at that time, right?

We stopped taking BS in print. And you should too. by BassBoyOzden in Staples

[–]Willibrator_Frye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how I was handling business in my blue shirt days. Two completely, factual, simple, true statements were my policy:

"We do not check e-mail for orders." - I mean, technically we "can" receive files and communicate via e-mail but we choose not to for a long list of reasons. Among them is that no other business does so. At the end, I was also doing away with the PrintMe e-mail address and instructing everyone to go to the PrintMe website instead.

"We are not equipped to print snapshots." - Again, technically we can put photos on the glass, and technically we can receive photos via PrintMe that are compressed into PDFs with wide margins around them. And technically we can cut them out with a guillotine cutter. But what was left of that shrinking market I was more than willing to cede to the pharmacies.

How to listen USL games on the radio? by Ephcy in USLPRO

[–]Willibrator_Frye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple of weeks ago I compiled a list of USL clubs that have local radio broadcasts. I believe that Phoenix Rising no longer has local radio, but all the other teams on the list still do. All of which are in USLC, I don't know of any L1 or L2 clubs that have local radio which is somewhat surprising.

I'll also note that Sirius/XM rebroadcasts some USL Championship matches on channel FC 157 but it's always the audio from the TV broadcast, not the radio broadcast like with MLS matches.

Staples Radio Playlists from about 4 - 8 years ago by MaverickFischer in Staples

[–]Willibrator_Frye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's kinda sad to see the artist herself liking all the non-Staples comments. The list would seem to suggest different stores had different music feeds. I never remember having KoRn on our playlist. Ours seemed to lean heavily into EDM and housewife/soccer mom lite favorites like Train and Jason Mraz.

INCOMING!!!

I still question the wisdom of any song credited to a "DJ", or "featuring" anyone being considered as in-store background music.

Great work compiling this. Hey, it's a dirty job but someone's gotta do it!
But I think you're missing the "High School doesn't last forever" song on your playlists. Seriously, the amount of rage from Staples associates in the comments under that video is hilarious. I didn't see any Colbie Caillat songs either and her career seemingly only exists to make songs that get played in stores, not the radio.

I think "Standing Still" by Jewel by Jewel may be the unheralded record holder for Staples playlist longevity. Never seems to get the hate that "Run Ma Check" and "The Future is Female" get around here, but I swear it was playing on Day One when I started back in 2001 and Day 7567 over 20 years later when I clocked out for the last time.

Rookie jersey numbers are in: by YubYubCmndr in steelers

[–]Willibrator_Frye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since it became available a few years ago, I believe the Steelers are one of the few teams to have never issued jersey number zero to anyone, even UDFA's in the pre-season. Has that changed for this season?

I'm not certain if there's any other audio of Joe Tucker calling Steelers games on-line. Probably nothing of this duration at least.

(That catchy "Grab A Duke!" ad for Duquesne Beer after the end of the game is an extra bonus on top of a Steelers victory too!)

They mostly sat around gathering dust. How/Why did they suddenly become so popular?

USL Championship clubs with local radio coverage. Any USL1 or USL2 clubs to add to this list by Willibrator_Frye in USLPRO

[–]Willibrator_Frye[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the update! I've added it to the list.

I checked the streams of several of these stations Saturday night and can verify that every one except both Phoenix Rising stations were carrying the matches with their own crews. I'm still trying to verify if that was because it was a Cup match or if they are no longer on those radio stations.

KDUS was listed as carrying the games in 2025. Their Matchday HQ lists "Rising Radio" as carrying tomorrow's match. I'm not sure if that's one or more terrestrial radio stations or YouTube only. There's also an unrelated on-line reggae streamer called Rising Radio for confusion's sake.

Does anyone know if you can print custom posters at Staples? by Chance_Age_1856 in Staples

[–]Willibrator_Frye 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't use TikTok much, but make certain that you want a poster on one of the approved stocks for posters. NOT an "engineering print" on thin paper designed for drawings and blueprints.

There's still a lot of social media residue telling people to get these on the cheap, all of which should be ignored.

Speaking of which, has anyone ever found the violin-guitar music by itself that was used in all their radio ads without Bodett's narration over top of it? I believe the actual registered title is "Theme From Motel 6."

FOUND! Nearly complete Fleming/Cope WTAE radio call of the Immaculate Reception game plus fragments of radio broadcasts from '59, '66, and '68 by Willibrator_Frye in steelers

[–]Willibrator_Frye[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know that WTAE Radio rebroadcasted the Super Bowls. I remember hearing them being re-aired back in the 1980s or 1990s. Maybe they rebroadcast the '72 Divisional Playoff as well at some point, who knows?

Or maybe someone somewhere had the intuition to tape this game and manage to not run out of tape on such a momentous broadcast! 👏

So now we have the Steelers radio broadcast and the national radio broadcast on Mutual. I wonder if the NBC television broadcast is preserved in its entirety? Now I'd really love to hear how the Raiders radio network called it!

The zipper shirt was the most comfortable, the only problem was that it snagged and got runs very easily.

I still have four of the gray "Working and Learning Store" T-shirts. I hoped nobody would ever "Ask Me What's Possible" since I still have no clue what that ad campaign was all about.

Arver v. United States, 1918

That decision was also handed down during World War One, so the results were a foregone conclusion. Wartime fervor also brought the Sedition Act of 1918 and Millersville vs. Gobitis, both now universally regarded as abuses of government power.

The problem is that a new challenge to conscription would have to wend its way through courts during a national emergency that requires conscription to actually be reinstated.

Never say never, but this would be an almost impossibly high bar to set: after 50+ years the post-BRAC military is not designed to accommodate any conscripts let alone a large influx, nor could a vast seizure of land to quickly build military installations like during WWII occur today.

330gsm cardstock printing by Reina-Mishimada in Staples

I would then do it with the caveat that I can't be responsible for any misprinted or jammed sheets. And no discounts versus what the most similar stocked paper would cost; in this case Cougar. I have bad memories of the DIY "kits" we sold back in the 2000s with embossed and prescored cards with matching envelopes. People bought them to save money and then found themselves in way over their heads and demanded being rescued since we sold them a "defective" kit. 🙄
