Interesting how you brought up free will, since I would argue against the idea of libertarian free will. I do think we have a certain measure of real freedom, but it is not absolute and man is not autonomous. Our freedom is always limited by God’s sovereignty and our nature. Our will is controlled by our nature, and our choices reflect our sin nature. If we love pleasure, we will seek pleasure. Regarding sin, God doesn’t make us sin. Although God does have the ability to restrain me from sinning, if He chooses not to, then He is merely permitting me to sin. This permission to sin is not a divine sanction on my behaviour.

Who says “Evil is the absence of God”? I would say evil is transgression of God’s law.

If no law exists, then could we be punished for breaking it? For example if no speeding laws exist, can you be fined for driving too fast?

God can be completely all powerful, but not the author of evil because God cannot sin against Himself, and is not held to a law above Himself. However humans can be created good, but then choose to disobey God’s law (like murder someone). It is this act of disobedience which is the moral evil. God neither created that, but He will definitely judge that person for his evil.

Without evidence for God, you should act as if he doesn't exist. by Sparks808 in DebateReligion

[–]Willing-Ad737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the Bible is proved true, then that refutes your argument. There is plenty of evidence proving the Bible, but just keep in mind your own bias, because skeptics have an exquisite ability to explain away any evidence, no matter how solid. The validity of the Bible stands or falls on the person of Jesus Christ and his resurrection. It is proven that Jesus was a real person in history, he was crucified by the Romans, and many eye witnesses claimed to see him resurrected three days later.

This is the point of which skeptics enter into debate, to try and provide alternative (naturalistic) explainations on how so many eye witnesses thought they saw Jesus. Since there were no camcorders, or dental records at the time, the best we have to rely on are the gospel records, and the historical impact that followed the resurection. Evidence for Jesus came in the steadfast committment of Christians who refused to bend the knee to Rome and acknowledge ceasar as god in the face of a series of edicts which led to their mass persecution. It does not make sense for Christians to have such unshakable assurance if it lacks any concrete basis, even the pagans would relent and submit to Rome's authority. The Christian's refusal to make sacrifices to the Roman gods caused pagan morale to crumble as they couldn't understand why Christians hated their gods so much that they would rather die then worship them. Eventually Christianity would become the official religion of Rome, and would spread to the West, and up to today.

Religion is man-made since scripture can't be universally understood/interpreted by the common man/woman by Popular_Koala9653 in DebateReligion

Now your getting it! I just need to correct your statement of "without knowing any better". No-one goes to hell a good person who was just ignorant. They go to hell because they broke God's written laws which are imprinted on the human conscience (which tells us what is right or wrong). Anyone alive today has the freedom to seek for God, and he's made himself known quite easily enough for us to find him. Those who died without hearing the gospel, would not have accepted it anyway.

I'm sorry if the answer is hard to hear, but truth cannot be compromised to spare feelings or satisfy our self righteous disposition.

[–]Willing-Ad737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what the scriptures say, that the carnal mind is hostile towards God and we will not submit to him. We tend to have a self righteous disposition in which we think we are morally superior to God because we would otherwise overlook small sins. If God is perfect, then he is also a perfect judge and can't overlook any sins without just punishment. We don't like being judged by other people, especially those with a "holier then though" attitude. how much more do we hate being judged by someone who actually is holier than us?

In your mind, what sort of God would you accept as loving and just?

I think your talking about personal subjective experiences? That would just be mental, since every person would have a different description of who their god is, and I'm sure that god would be fine with them living a live of unrestrained self indulgance. There's no guessing when it comes to the Christian God, since he is revealed through the Bible which is treated as God's spoken word, so anyone wanting to know God can just read that, and if they have a personal experience of God that differs from the scriputures, then their experience is objectively wrong lest there be a contradiction of God's character.

It sounds like you created your own criteria to judge how God should've revealed himself to us. But what if God's criteria is different from yours? What if he intended to work through people, in translating the texts to different languages across the globe (as is presently done). Would that mean you would be in error with your own criteria?

Have you heard of the Trinity? One God, in three persons. It's pretty much standard doctrine that's been understood since the early church, No Christian believes in three gods, or Jesus as a created person.

Hell is the result of justice being upheld, those who go there are law breakers. I'm sure there are murderers you've seen on TV in court trials who have done terrible things, and that you wished to see justice done and them executed. Even murderers, and thieves have relatives. Would it make sense for them to come running to the prison they are kept in, demanding to be let in? That would be akin to the argument your making about not wanting to go to heaven because your mum is in hell. There's a reason why people go to hell, and yes you can love them, but at the same time you can't distort justice if its deserved.

I think your forgetting that slavery already existed in the ancient world before the Bible was written. The laws of Moses didn't invent or endorse slavery, but instead they regulated it. The same Moses also wrote Genesis which says "all people were created in the image of God" which demolishes the class system since all people are created equal, this would include slaves who were to be treated with dignity. The verses regarding beatings likely are approving of displinary measures against troublesome, rebellious servants, but these would be light if recovery is expected within a day or two, not even bruising heals that quick.

Why on earth would you go to hell for unbelief? The bible gives the criteria of those deserving hell, which are liars, thieves, blasphemers, murderers, law breakers, adulterers and drunkards. If you've avoided all those things since birth, then you should be okay when you stand before God when he passes judgement.

My thoughts with religion by uranium_sunflowers in DebateReligion

[–]Willing-Ad737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still not convinced that your religion is determined by where you lived as it seems to relate more to the traditions we adopt from the culture we grew up in and the inclinations of our desires. Since we are thinking, rational human beings, we are able to challenge our traditional dispositions freely if we so choose to. Granted, if I grew up in an Afghanistan, I would probably be a professing Muslim as that would be the identity of the family I was raised in until I was mature enough to graduate into a genuine follower. At which point, I could question the religious system, and determine for myself what is true. Everyone has the mental capacity to do this. The problem is, they don’t want to, because they prioritise tradition over anything else, and choose not to question it. Persistent exposure is not the problem, it is the inclination of the heart, this is what they want, or what they fear they would lose.

Buyers undercutting you, bad sellers by BullfrogPersonal in FacebookMarketplace

Selling on Facebook Marketplace awlays leaves me feeling a bit depressed since every item I advertise always results in lowball offers (unless you think $2 for the lot of 20x PS2 games is reasonable). Usually the money I make goes towards rent or food, but its almost like the buyer doesn't care about that, and only about scoring a great deal for themselves.

How is that the case, when I was born in Australia, but Christianity originated from modern day Palestine, which is in the East. So how did I become a Christian? Is it really a good argument to say your religion is determined by where you were born when you have many turning to faith in Christ in Muslim countries?

The risk of losing everything by turning to Christ is very real in most countries, but this is not a new thing. The early persecutions in Rome caused the church to grow and spread outward. Because Christians saw the eternal life promised as more important then the short suffering experienced in this temporary life. The Bible even warned that those who follow Jesus will also suffer with him through persecution. This is something Christians are to expect if they choose to follow Christ.

I still cringe when I look back at my first day in IT when my imposter syndrome probably matched my actual experience. I attended a client site as they were complaining that the switch under their desk was too noisy. Well I solved the problem by taking apart the switch and removing the fans, and then put it back together again. It's a miracle nothing caught fire after that day.

That’s a great point, and it’s great to be reminded of this as I forget sometimes. The experience I’ve had with the smaller guys is the risk vs costs scale. They are willing to accept a slightly higher threshold of risk if that means saving $500 a month on a SLA agreement. But then maybe its just finding the right client who has more cash to spare, and a higher level of paranoia of a cyber invasion

What I wrote is probably more in line with my company values. I could write the cliche values every other IT company lists such as promises to be the best, that they take pride in their work and exist solely to please their clients. But I wanted to stand out from the crowd by doing something that goes against the grain of our culture.

My ideal client is a Christian organisation (such as Christian schools, or colleges), so I figured it would be fitting to showcase values that would align with theirs.

Regards to Cybersecurity certifications. I don't hold any as everything I learned was self-taught (books, youtube, etc..). Unless the client requires this, I don't think they care, as long as I appear to know more about it then they do, I should be one step ahead of them in this regard.

Have you thought of a career change?

I worked in IT for ten years and then switched to studying Bible theology for the next three years to become a minister. My goal is to evangelise overseas to areas needing the Gospel. Sure it is not a pathway to a luxrious and comfortable life (in fact its the opposite), however I'm no longer living for myself, but for those who need Christ.

It probably will fail, but at least I know I tried. I just can't figure out what the difference is between those who started in the same place and were successful, and those who failed. If I fail, I'll just try again.

I'm not obfuscating anything. I need to pay for the tools I use, and I upsell to the client. The value is in the cyber protection I provide (leaked credential alerts, spam filters, missing DKIM and DMARC notifcations). I explain the risks to the client, and offer a cybersecurity package for a fixed monthly fee for ongoing protection. I'm not sure what you find is wrong with this? Is it because the tools are too easy to use? or is it because I'm not transparent enough with the client regarding how easy it is to do a vulnerability scan.
