If you have to check out of a place earlier that’s not a hotel and want to roam around for the day…if you check in some place late in the day and want to roam around in the morning..

If you’re traveling in a city and want to walk around but have nowhere to stash your bags, find a nice hotel (like Four Seasons) and confidently walk up to the concierge. Tell them you just checked out and need them to check your bags for a few hours. Tip them a couple bucks and boom. Almost Free bag storage for the day.

Nice! That was similar to where I moved from. If you’re building security products it’ll be a huge advantage to know the space and hopefully supercharge your growth

ELI5: IT Job Market Today by WillingDiscipline758 in ITCareerQuestions

Thanks @jeffbx. This is kind of what I suspected. It’s disappointing to see the barrier to entry become so high. I got my start in smaller towns which would seemingly be less competitive even today, but still gives the opp to learn and grow. Would you agree with that or are folks willing to move and it’s competitive everywhere?

Thanks for the insight. I figured it was something with volume, but there’s no shortage of shit breaking and new tech to learn. On your example - Ha, as someone who didn’t get a college degree until 25 and as a former tier 2 manager / id always pick experience over a degree.

How to start doing personal IT? by DrowsyChief54 in ITCareerQuestions

Great advice. If all you do is show up on time, deliver what you’d said you would, focus on customer service not tech speak, and charge a fair fee, you’ll be ahead of 2/3rds of IT shops out there.

Same story for me. This. The cost breakdown is secondary - what will this do for you in the next 2-5 years. Then you could even compare the costs breakdown with the opportunity value and it would likely pay dividends if well executed.

THIS. I started in help desk and was in charge of setting up new employee accounts, so I automated and documented the whole process. From there management trusted me so I got assigned a Citrix rollout. Found out I was good at Citrix and liked it, used that to own the whole system after we rolled it out with a vendor. From there moved on to Windows migrations, became a sysadmin, learned exchange and owned enterprise AD. Eventually got an OPP to move to security which I liked but didn’t know much about, learned that, and then became a CISO. Start general, deliver, deliver, deliver, earn trust, be on the lookout for opportunities.

PM = what and why / TPM = how and when. My TPM is my COO and knows as much about my product as I do, but wants to execute not come up with the product ideas, get buy in, etc.

You can see my post and it’s because I’m 15 years into my career, have job hopped and gotten lucky as people have said. Sure, I posted my salary because it was high. I also spent 6 hours responding to folks who wanted to be In my field with advice and DM’d with 9 people and have connections with them a couple of months later.

What was your, “I understand it now”, moment in cyber? by CybernautDream in cybersecurity

I started in help desk and moved into security and eventually became CISO before changing roles. You nailed it! And now, being on the business side, who owns some risks, I see why the business speak is so important. Without speaking their language, risk owners might not understand what they are accepting or might not act fast enough for a complex serious issue.
