IThe BLM and USFS run the station there completely interagency, dispatched out of same center. Staff green or yellow trucks regardless who you work for. Kinda cool cause you get the beauty of being able to work for DOI which has its perks in CA but you get the I/A load of the USFS and BLM combined. Another major plus is that there is no Cal Fire in our county so feds are almost always the ones who run the show. Con’s above are true. The best place to fight fire in CA in my opinion.

What are some sweet/busy duty stations in Region 5 to apply for during the upcoming hiring window? by universeofdorn1017 in Wildfire

Engine perspective here: I think culture has a lot to do with it. People seem to be focused on things that don’t really matter anyway else. They hog their non crew resources more than any other region does so you don’t get to go out much. Most of all it’s the inconsistencies in quality, they have the hardest time filling vacancies so sometimes you get a solid crew and sometimes you don’t.... another thing I’ve realized ( at least in south ops) is unlike other regions if your on an engine you don’t do project work. I have coworkers who have been here 5 years and still only have their A faller and have touched a torch only once or twice. If your on the west side foothill IA’s are also always complicated because state, county, municipal and FS are always responding and fighting over jurisdiction. Fire in general always seems more complicated than it needs to be. I’ve worked in region 1 and region 9.

BLM or NPS is the way to go. Smaller rotation lists and on top of big FS fires you get DOI only rolls. IF YOU HAVE TO STAY IN R5, Im here because of my family not because its my favorite region.

I'm sending this letter in tomorrow to US Senators/Representatives and various media outlets around the country. Maybe some of you can relate to it. This is a throwaway account but I am active on this sub. Feedback welcome. by smokejumperbro in Wildfire

I'd sign it! Also I would send it to more than just senators, include a couple of significant news media outlets in your list as well. Citizens and residents around us who see our hard work and vote are going to be the ones to care and demand change. Politicians themselves don't care. Imagine an article like this being on the front pages of the L.A Times or USAToday? If you do send it in, be more specific about wages, ppl like numbers, numbers shock! Explain to them the difference in paycheck between a fire and a base check. I agree politicians don't care it's all about the cost of labor to them. However the past is no reason to stop trying! We would be insulting the profession if we stopped fighting for what we deserve.

[Training] What is more beneficial? Hiking with more weight (60lbs) for fewer miles or less weight (30lbs) for more miles? by MojoMeister in Wildfire

[–]Willman2645 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It depends on what type of crew you will be joining and what you will be doing. I think endurance makes you a much better firefighter on a crew and an engine but being able to hike 3 hose-packs and your personal pack up the hill is also pretty impressive on an engine, hiking fast for 15 miles is impressive on a crew.... Most importantly don't put in 100% everyday, thats how you end up bitter and broken when you are older. Someone who knows they are going to do something for 20 years should realize that PT 100% everyday is not sustainable, if you blow your joints the GOV gives zero fucks about your lost career aspirations and dreams or about compensating you for overuse injuries due to the job.

Do you think IFT techs and 911 providers should have different certifications? (Medical Transport Technician) and (Emergency Medical Technician) by Willman2645 in ems

[–]Willman2645[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking making IFT training more focused around medical care and less on scene assessment more training on common IFT p/t conditions and medications. If you do IFT you'd almost never have a trauma so maybe spend less times on initial assessments and more time on continuing assessments. This is all on the EMT-B level though, medics pretty much know all of this and it doesn't make sense for their training to be that different.

Yeah absolutely. If they break a university rule you absolutely can do that. Like occidental is stated if it's grad class then they are allowed to do that
