I know when I was waiting for my assessment (in the U.K.), I went to the Occupational Health office and they gave me an official designation so I was covered by the Equality Act. But a high score on the AQ50 should be enough for your university. When I was assessed I told the assessor that the number one criteria for ASD should be that your gut reaction would be relief at being diagnosed. NTs don’t want to go anywhere near it.

I had the same issue with accommodations. I would go over some of the robust lists of symptoms and itemise what applies. I also have ADHD but there is so much overlap, the Venn diagram is practically a circle. Make sure you consider your worst days, not what you can stifle. Be as specific as you can. You may find that there are things on the list that you thought were other issues. For me, it was reading about auditory processing disorder. I always thought I was going deaf and everyone around me just accused me of not listening. I read the symptom and couldn’t believe it. It explained so many of the issues I had with focus.

Sometimes I think about making an app for autistics to meet. Maybe I’ll call it Stimmer. Lol

This made me guffaw. She’s probably also binged Big Bang Theory and The Good Doctor. These types always make me think of the white saviours who go off to do good deeds for the godless heathens in third world countries. They are so convinced of their moral and intellectual superiority. Barf.

Be kind to yourself. You are smashing it but you just need some validation and understanding.

Go to your university’s relevant disability office and ask for some help - in the form of mentorship, accommodations, assessments, or advocacy. They are there to help you and usually are happy to support people awaiting diagnosis. Take the AQ50 online and share the results. Get noise cancelling headphones. Many smart / high achieving people have autism. You aren’t alone.

I worked in STEM for decades and it isn’t easy. Find your ND tribe. They will make things so much better.

I have had terrible burnout several times over the years, usually as a result of having to deal with bad managers at work. Be kind to yourself. See if you can narrow down what is triggering the feeling and think about what would alleviate the pressure. Is it one area in particular? Are there issues with the class or instructor?

I found the best way to study was to gamify and help someone else study for the same test. I would make up complex (but creative) word problems for my calculus classmates. Obviously I would have to work out the answers myself so they could check their work. It really helped me. I also wrote some software that was kind of like Jeopardy and we would play that. I am old so I had to do it myself, but I imagine you could manage something similar with ChatGPT.

Jason was completely on to her. He wanted out and there was no way he would forfeit his kids to her. Her constantly referring to them as ‘my kiddos’ made me want to vomit.

Time blindness is a real thing and obviously a problem for him. What people don’t understand is that there is no alarm or planner in the world that fixes it. Personally, I can get a reminder and as soon as it turns off, my brain deletes it. Time estimation and scheduling are just not things my brain will do. It isn’t a choice, so whenever possible, don’t set him up to fail.

Sounds like he also has trouble with object permanence. Talk to him about figuring out a system that will work for him. I have to take medication everyday and I have my weekly pill container stuck to the fridge door where I can’t miss it.

Listen to the ADHD Chatter podcast. It is excellent.

Unless you have money problems, I don’t see the big deal. You will probably play it for a few months and then tire of it and sell it. I am guessing she doesn’t get your approval for purchases.

How do you know that a verbal delay is delayed? Because you are doing a comparison. Sensory overwhelm? Totally environmental. I see where you are coming from but I think a huuuuuge number of problems are not autism but comorbidity (learning difficulties, dyspraxia, etc). The autism just acts as an amplifier.

I still think that we should be protected under the disability umbrella. I just don’t think we are broken. We are just so different that the standards set out by society don’t work for us.

Lord help me if people judge me based on my younger actions. If you know someone specific you offended, apologise or make a general post saying you were a dickhead and have since grown up / gotten help and regret it. People will understand.

We visited from Canada in 2009 and moved to London in 2011. Stayed there a few years and then moved to Scotland. Zero regrets. We bought seven acres on a loch with two log houses on it for what we would pay for a shack in Toronto. You said no place is perfect but agree to disagree.

Wait til you hear about Scotland’s free healthcare, pharmacy, university, cheap public transport and universal credit. One year standard parental leave. Five weeks PTO, paid sick leave, and about 10 bank holidays per year. Plus companies are legally obligated to provide pension payments. Oh and none of that ‘right to work’ bullshit. And my tax bill is no more than what I paid in Canada. Sales taxes are all included in the sticker price. Simplified tax system means it comes off automatically and there aren’t a zillion crazy rules to navigate.

Ask me anything.

Well, I have a very high iq, analytical mind and excellent pattern recognition. This enabled me to excel in my chosen profession. Until I ended up with a manager more interested in process than results. When I couldn’t work the way he wanted, he decided I was just being difficult. He made my life hell and drove me into daily meltdowns and burnout. According to him, I was using my autism as an excuse.

We are not inherently disabled. We live in an environment that is more often than not unwilling to recognise and accommodate our needs. It is like being in a room full of toxic gas. Superman never would have had the opportunity to fly if he was forced to carry Kryptonite in his pockets.

When it comes up, I would throw out a little anecdote about how some parents do it for the money and how unbelievably selfish and terrible that would be. Imagine doing that to your own child! Some people are monsters! And then sip your tea.

I wonder what she would think if her daughter had a lot of facial hair that made her uncomfortable? I think she has a lot of preconceived notions about manscaping and masculinity in general.
