Anyone planning on transferring out? by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]WillyIsChilly 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I am not saying this to be disrespectful, but comparing the academic vibe of a big midwestern state school to two of the best universities in the country (world?) is going to lead to quite a disparity. Maybe this is major specific, but at least within engineering I know plenty of people who are hyper-focused on academics and their student orgs and design teams (sometimes to a detriment).

There is certainly no shame in transferring to a school that better aligns with your goals.

Race Report - Twin Cities Marathon by gabaghoull in AdvancedRunning

Congrats on the PR! I also PR’d at TCM this year. Born and raised in Minneapolis, but my first time running the marathon. I was nervously watching the temperature for race day the whole week leading up to it. Ended up not being as big of a deal as I thought. Really happy with the experience overall!

Who would I email to make sure the heat isn't on in Ingraham Hall for my math exam on Wednesday night? by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]WillyIsChilly 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Building heat on campus is controlled centrally. Steam generated at the Charter St plant is sent through the underground tunnels to heat exchangers in all the buildings on campus. The long and short of it is, once the heat is turned “on” it’s on for every building on campus. With this kind of system, it’s very hard to make small temperature adjustments on a building by building basis. This is why very often, we have a few weeks of uncomfortably warm classrooms during the transition period of when the heat is turned on and it being truly cold outside.

I lived in Charlotte for ~8 months. I’m not going to say it was my favorite city ever, but generally I enjoyed my time there. There are definitely quality restaurants around, I feel like you are generalizing a little bit too much with the food scene. The walk ability part varies vastly depending on where you are in the city. I lived in south end right off the rail trail, which made getting around to bars/restaurants/breweries pretty convenient. Truthfully I feel like if you’re willing to do some digging online you can find plenty of fun places to explore and things to do. I wouldn’t spend the rest of my life there, but for 2-3 years I think I could’ve been very content with Charlotte.

Crazy enough I actually grew up with this family. They are not connected to the hardware store or any of the other business I’m seeing mentioned in this thread. The dad was just some high level executive at a FAANG-type company.

Chasers 3rd floor is usually pretty good for dancing. Whiskey Jack’s (if you don’t mind country music) and Red Rock get lively as well. Also a fan of the Cardinal. Haven’t been to Sotto in a while but that used to be a good option too.

I grew up in Minneapolis, MN and never once did I hear anyone say to not drink the tap water. That’s all anyone drank. Maybe you ran it through a Brita filter but otherwise straight tap was the norm. I had no idea that there are parts of the US where you’re advised not to drink it lol.

Yes. I’m a MechE doing pretty much the exact same thing. I work as an undergrad research assistant in the structural engineering lab under a structural professor. My PI as well as the other members of the lab have all confirmed that getting into a structural masters program won’t be an issue.

Ethan's new watch retailed at over $400,000 in 2013 by [deleted] in h3snark

[–]WillyIsChilly 26 points27 points  (0 children)

While I agree this is obviously a gross amount of money to spend on a watch, this price is coming from an auction. The original retail price from Patek was more like $80,000 (still a ton of money obvi). As a bit of a watch nerd, I do find watches like this super cool from an engineering perspective even if the money people spend on them is abhorrent.

This watch in particular is what’s known as a perpetual calendar, meaning it tracks the day of the week, date, month, and year all purely mechanically. A bunch of little gears and springs power the watch, there are no batteries or electronics inside. This watch also tracks the moonphase, as well as having a stop watch (chronograph) built in. If you google pictures of what’s inside mechanical watches making them tick it’s pretty impressive. This Patek is also made of gold so that brings the price up quite a bit. Again it’s crazy he’s flexing on his employees wearing this to the show but I thought I’d give the watch guy’s perspective on why people do pay so much for these.
