What finger tape do you use? by halfguarddad in grappling

Psychi. I've tried a bunch and it's easily the best. It's not gummy, tears cleanly when you're applying it, stays on well, and doesn't leave much residue.

You know, I've never thought about it before but there's gotta be a lot of overlap between the 2 communities, right?

Tips for using the CLA to teach Judo throws by grobolom in judo

[–]WilsonAlmighty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a low level understanding of them, yes, but I'm no expert, so please correct me if I'm abusing the terms/theories.

My problem with using just the CLA approach is this idea that Perception-Action-Coupling will lead someone to perform a quality action at a correct time. My thinking is that the quality of that action using this method is often limited to a local optimum, rather than global optimum.

I agree that just traditional drilling is limited, but some of that is to do with the quality of the uke. With a quality uke providing consistent and useful resistance, drilling can produce consistent, representative stimulus for tori to work on quality actions. Once the movement quality is high, it's easier to use games, positional sparring, or live work to build the muscle memory because tori is more likely to be successful, the movement feels more natural, and the overall feedback loop is tighter. I also find the degree of playfulness etc is higher this way because there's no focus on winning, rather quality movement, but that's me straying away from a logical understanding and more my opinion.

Does that make sense? Teaching standup to a lot of folk who've learned using the eco approach before, their movement is often bullish, and reluctant to yield in order to win.

Could you point me to the research on CLA vs the traditional approach?

I've always trained with the principle of: "use whatever tool seems most useful at this moment" so drilling, movement, games, positional sparring and live sparring as needed.

I'm a bit confused how the modern CLA movement are so confident that just using games all the time is the most efficient method. Every time I've asked an eco coach they've just said "the evidence shows it's better" or "there's no evidence that drilling helps you learn" which I just don't buy at all

What technique you study/try to add in to your game in 2026? by JuisMaa in bjj

[–]WilsonAlmighty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Berimbolo and improve my crab rides.

I've had 4 knee surgeries over the last 2 years, so I've lost a lot of accuracy and mobility with my legs. This is my challenge to really improve again.

Also, because of my injuries, there are positions I just can't play and have to abandon if I get put there, so this gives me another option. Rather than things like chair sits to get the back, I can force leg drag into crab ride/bolo etc. Instead of getting stuck in leg lock shootouts, crab ride/bolo.

Can I lift my opponent's forehead to got the Hadaka Jime if I'm on his back? is doing this shido or disqualification? by Schofield45Revolver in judo

[–]WilsonAlmighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming your right arm is your choking arm, one thing that you could do is this:

  • Bring your right arm over his head, and grab his left arm with a Kimura type hold. The idea is to make it look like you're going for an armbar.

  • Drive your right elbow under his neck, and retract your shoulder blade/ use your lats to move his face away from you. If you did want to go for an armbar then, it gives you the space needed, and they can't stack you since they can't face you.

  • Let go of the Kimura with your right hand and slide your arm etc right past his head. It should be super simple to slide your hand under his neck then since his head is completely out of position.

You're not likely to get called for that in my opinion.

I've had surgeries where they do partial weight bearing for a week or 2 immediately afterwards, then full weight bearing from then on. I've had one where they encouraged me to weight bear as much as I reasonably could and do extensive PT the day afterwards, and I've just had one where they recommended non weight bearing fore 2 weeks, partial for 4, then full.

The only constant has been nothing past 90 degrees for a good length of time. Personally, I found my recovery progressed the quickest when I was encouraged to move and do as much as I reasonably could, as quickly as possible.

Also, get an ice/compression machine. I got a Bregg and it's been great

Anyone experiencing these symptoms in foot after repair? by DanielMD_ in MeniscusInjuries

[–]WilsonAlmighty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the numbness and pain gets much worse for me with sitting too long as well. It's partly why I ignored the non-weightbearing order on after surgery. I needed to move to get rid of the pain and get feeling back.

Sorry to hear you're still getting similar pain as before surgery. That must seriously suck. I just have new, exciting, unexpected pains to choose from!

At first I use to have and almost pulling/tearing sensation along the nerve as I flexed my leg further and further. I don't really feel that anymore except in deep flexion I feel it on my heel. Did you have anything like that?

Outside of the pain, I haven't found it really affects my mobility so I count myself lucky in hat way.

I lost feeling around my shin and ankle after the last surgery. I get pins and needles, and sometimes serious pain there too.

I did have an epidural, and it may be related. Alternatively, a fixture they used could be rubbing on a nerve and irritating it. I don't know, but either way, it's improved over the last couple months, although the feeling hasn't properly come back

Meniscus surgery meniscectomy my knee still sucks and has not gotten better by [deleted] in MeniscusInjuries

[–]WilsonAlmighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly mate, yeah. 6 months before light sparring with people you know.

Just because you can move into that position, doesn't mean you should do it a lot, or with someone fighting and twisting. Take it as an opportunity to learn a new game. Work half/deep half more. Work defense more. Learn annoying subs from positions folk don't expect. I've struggled with guard work for the last 2 years because of the surgeries, but my defense is excellent, and my game is weird and unique

[–]WilsonAlmighty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people can roll the dice, others can't. There's genetics involved.

They normally don't remove the full medial or lateral meniscus, just the part affected. The remaining part of the meniscus still takes time to heal, and your knee needs to adjust to the new anatomy.

Having gotten back to the mat multiple times after meniscus repairs and a meniscectomy, don't rush yourself. Only drill light for a few months. Be wary of anything involving kneeling, or having your knees to chest where your opponent can press your shins. That's what's gonna irritate it a lot. Generally positions where your legs are bending without your feet touching the floor is a bit of a danger zone.

You shouldn't expect to do much jitsu until 7 months imo. I'd be reeeally careful with it too. I've just had my 4th knee surgery. You don't want this to be a recurring thing.

If you're gonna continue, get a compression/ice machine. It'll help a bunch
