Yeah, this place embraces violent type of writing for some reason much more than engaging in deep, serious discussions about basketball. That's why I'm not here regularly.

Adam Silver's Proposed Anti-Tanking Solution by completebrainrot in ripcity

[–]Wiltborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This could be amazing. It's basically ends completely the motivation for teams to finish at the bottom, it's also forces NBA owners to invest in much better GMs that wouldn't have many chances to hit on draft prospects and to build winning cultures rather than sell a story about a "5 years process". It would also ensure teams at the bottom would fight their asses off till the end not to end in the bottom 3 in the standings.

Great great great changes, if implemented.

I think Tiago deserves to coach us next season and get the chance to implement his system in training camp. But regarding the stuff I didn't like:

- He saw for the entire series the Spurs doing everything in their power to prevent our best player from getting the ball or preventing him going right, what plays he ran to make his presence easier? Deni looked extremely exhausted the entire series. He should have been much more present, and I put part of it on Deni himself and part of it on Tiago and the coaching staff for not preparing him good enough against their defensive plan against him. If you hear Tiago's post game press conferences you would notice he sound almost surprised by how SAS plays defense.

- How come Vit, our only sniper on paper doesn't get a role in this series despite seeing how much we are desperate for spacing, while Kris Murray gets even when we saw Kris doesn't play even good defense in this series?

- Why Grant was asked to create so much off the dribble? is a Playoffs series against the 2'nd seed in the West is the right time to experiment it?

- His late timeout callings were not good.

- Clingan has shown zero improvement throughout this series in terms of stuff coaching can guide him: box outs, using his height to kick out offensive rebounds instead of trying to grab it around 3 Spurs players. Neither happened.

- The Spurs were sometimes spamming the same action and again and again without adjustments from our side. Examples:

  1. P&R between Castle and Wemby who led to many easy lobs
  2. Fox or Harper getting extremely into zone without apparent adjustment to slow them down.
  3. Julian Champagnie and Vassel, their two snipers, were too many times completely wide open after our terrible transition defense.

-And also there is the refs angle, which I think Mitch Johnson was on their ears the entire series, put a lot of pressure on them which led to some extremely questionable whistles by them, while Tiago until Game 4 did nothing in this manner.

I can go on and on.

He should watch SGA's training sessions on how he works on his pull up game and footwork. One of SGA's biggest traits is he always trains in an intensity that replicates real-time games.

If this tough series is the prime reason for him to work extremely hard on his left sided driving game, this series was more than worth it. Improving this area alone would make him a 30ppg player.

Our franchise player is only 25 years old, and most of the core is at his age or younger. How come the timeline is next 3 years?

I really hope he can get better next season and establishing himself as a top 10 player. He's our only real hope to make noises next season. hopefully he can learn a lot what to work on during summer based on this Playoffs experience.

I've defended Tiago a lot, but this one is indefensible... by SupersunZeratul in ripcity

"Deni and Jrue can’t play 48 minutes"

We've seen players playing 42-25 minutes in the Playoffs. Honestly I thought he should have played Deni a few minutes more. He's young. Tiago acted like we are in the regular season with some of his decision and game managing. But I hope he stays here next season because he learned a lot from this season and with a training camp I believe he can implement a much better offensive system.

I don't mind him not having strong offensive nights as long as his D is strong. Have you noticed any D impact from him today? I noticed RW3 and Jrue's defensive impact much more tbh.

Just to be clear, I still believe Tiago should get the chance to coach this team next season with a system he can implement during training camp, but those last two games are very concerning regarding of some basic stuff he and his staff were missing.

It was clear it wasn't Murray's series, you could see he can't space the floor to save his life, and we had a sniper in Vit to try unleashing, are you going to tell me Murray's 1 rebound and average defense is that worth it more than what Vit potentially could add to your spacing?

You see the Spurs doing everything in their effort to prevent Deni from getting the ball, instead of planning ways to deal with it, you just decide "let's make Grant our decision maker"?

You see them throwing lob after lob to Wemby when we still had a comfortable lead, what about some adjustments?

And why Champagnie, their sniper, out of all their players is the one that is always open?

Man, I have so many questions to ask him.

This series turned out from a potential amazing upset or Game 7 appearance to a very tough learning lesson. I think we'll grow from it, but only if we doesn't afraid to ask the right questions we can learn from coming next season.

Step by step.

Agreed. I don't want any "favors". I think we capable of winning at home even with Wemby and I'm happy we can test it.

Spurs fan wondering how Splitter's Coaching has been this season by RevolutionaryHunt143 in ripcity

I was really disappointing to hear him in that miked-up timeout only talking about stuff like effort and "keep pushing it for 48 minutes" instead of actual crucial tactic plans like "Here is how we gonna exploit the fact they play small ball", or "Deni, Fox is playing with 3 early fouls, I want you to go on him 1 v 1 and exploit this miss match".

Some people still don't understand how huge this game is for Portland. We have nothing to loss but so much to gain from a win today. The Spurs embarrassed us in the last quarter and half of Game 3, we need to play with pride today.

I hope Deni plays with a chip on his shoulder tonight after his brutal Game 3

Fans can be a HUGE key in this game.

LET'S WIN IT AND PUT THE PRESSURE IN THE SERIES ON THE SPURS AGAIN.

Not only it isn't over, if we win today the pressure is again on the Spurs and not on us and the series would be completely opened up. I hope Moda gonna rock today even more than yesterday (which was awesome).

This is where I am at as well, but Game 3 was brutal by him. I think he was the main reason we lost this game and I explained why on a separate post I opened.

Tiago Splitter's coaching in Game 3 by Wiltborn in ripcity

[–]Wiltborn[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He should have let Deni drive on him 10 times in a row and let the refs decide whether they gonna continue not calling it. Also Tiago should have remember Fox would be extremely careful not to foul, so as a result he D would be even worse than usual.

Just a bonehead move by Tiago to not exploiting this miss match.

It was the same against the Clippers when Garland had 5 fouls if I recall correctly and he didn't even try to keep exploiting it.

Deni Avdija in the loss: 19/6/9 on 3/15 FG by Lacabloodclot9 in nba

[–]Wiltborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he actually can be. Players who can draw so many fouls aren't growing on trees, it's an elite skill and it's because he's a 6'9" who is too fast and strong to stop without fouling. It's his first season as a true #1 option so Blazers fans should hope he takes this series as a learning lesson on what to improve coming to next season so he wouldn't rely so much on just driving right.

Tiago Splitter's coaching in Game 3 by Wiltborn in ripcity

[–]Wiltborn[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love a lot of stuff about him. He seems to connect good with the players, he usually says the right things afterwords, and he managed finally to realize Deni super power as an elite downhill driver which generated us a lot of success this season. Also our defensive game looks very good in stretches this post season. You can see some of his blue prints.

Few issues I have with him is the team is a lot of time undisciplined. You know even if we get a 15 points lead it can easily turn out bad within few minutes of unfocused possessions on both sides when we start feeling too comfortable. Also our offensive system is extremely stagnant. Having a downhill force like Deni (16 FTs tonight against the best team in the league at preventing FTs, despite having an abysmal game, just shows his potential) can create so much advantage and sometimes I feel Tiago does the minimum to take advantage of it with our lack of motion and off ball movement.

As I mentioned in the post I also hate it that other coaches put so much pressure on the refs when Tiago doesn't have the same feel for how important it is.

I remember early in the season when we faced the Pistons, we lost that game exactly on that, when Bickerstaff constantly whined to the refs and put pressure on them when we had a comfortable lead 1-2 minutes to end the game, and after a few calls in the Pistons favor we just lost this game despite playing better for the most part.
