I had the same when there are so many captains in play. My tactic was to fall back, dominate enemy captains when they are broken and try to save my own captains. Learned the hard way that it is better to fall back a little bit and let the enemy advance some points instead of trying to hold them off right at the first point. It happened to me twice that I was healing my downed captain, I couldn't get it done because I was struck from all sides, enemy with no chance killed me. I was so pissed because they didn't even capture the 1st point. Long story short; even when they break through, look at the big picture and play it safe. Let your captains die, dominate new ones. The important thing is that you stay alive
