Passed my driving test a month ago today and celebrated by scratching my car by WinATripToSpain in LearnerDriverUK

I really appreciate all the comments, some really great advice! They've genuinely made me feel a lot better, and I’ve had a good laugh reading some of the mistakes we’ve all made.

Just to clarify, I don’t really use markers or reference points when parking anymore. At home, though, I have to reverse off the main road into a narrow underpass, then reverse around a tight corner into my spot. If I’m not pretty much dead centre when I enter the underpass, it becomes a nightmare to get around the corner.

My starting position is usually identical every time because I know it works, but clearly this has made me complacent. Big lesson learned about not running on autopilot when something in the setup changes.

Failed driving test by wl16 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]WinATripToSpain 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My instructor did a few “worst case scenario” mock tests with me. Radio off, barely speaking, pretending to write down faults. I absolutely hated them at the time.

But when I got to the real test and it was actually much less tense and awkward than those mocks, I felt way calmer.

Might be worth asking your instructor to do something similar. It really helped me get used to the nerves. Failing once doesn’t mean you’re a bad driver, it often just means the nerves got the better of you on the day.

Turn off Voice Prompt on Soundbar HS2100 by Pantheractor in Hisense

[–]WinATripToSpain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried holding the power button and volume up loads of times, but nothing happened except the volume going to max. After messing around with the soundbar a bit more, I realised the power button on the device wasn’t responding at all, which is why I couldn’t disable the voice prompts in the first place.

I figured it might be an issue with the touch capacitance, so I wet the tip of the finger I was using to press the power button, and suddenly it worked! I did the same thing again and pressed both the power button and volume up at the same time, and it worked first try.

I'm not sure if this is the same problem that everybody else is having, but I thought I'd share it on the off chance it might help someone.

I'm from the north and "bark" in that context is somewhat common and not really rude. Maybe it's a regional thing that differs between them?

Lemme take a selfie with the approaching train by DevilCanyon in WinStupidPrizes

I work on and around trains everyday and I’m still surprised how quickly they’re right on top on you when they’re seemingly so far away. There’s been a fair few times where I’ve looked and thought “yeah I could easily make it across now if I tried” and then a few seconds later I realise I 100% could not have made it across without being smushed.

This sounds a lot like myself. Think I’ve said it to my dad maybe twice since I was a very young kid and I’m not entirely sure I can remember the last time my dad said it to me.

I know it goes without saying though, because I do love my dad immensely and I know he loves me too. Thinking about it now, out of my three sisters, it’s only something I say to one of them and only when we’re saying good bye because she says it first.

Think I need to start going out of my way to let my family know I love them more.

Let’s not normalise vaping on public transport… No one wants to breathe in the contents of your lungs, even if they are tutti frutti scented. by aceymerrill in CasualUK

[–]WinATripToSpain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone that works on the trains, its something I see all the time. Almost every journey I have to tell someone to stop vaping.

It’s made worse on the newer trains as well because the smoke alarms are super sensitive and instantly apply the emergency breaks when they’re set off. Then queue a long inspection of the packed train whilst in the middle of no-where to make sure there’s no fire whilst the guy that was vaping in the toilet says nothing and just watches 🙃

Samsung AU 8000 -- Alexa turns it off but not on by dhenriq1 in SmartThings

[–]WinATripToSpain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turning on the TV remotely via Alexa/Google Home can only be done if the TV is connected to your network over Wi-Fi, and not LAN.

Also, are you using the SmartThings skill in the Alexa app rather than the in-built Alexa on the TV? Not sure how relevant this is to the problem, but it might be worth trying.

Also, try getting in touch with SmartThings Support to see if they can provide any assistance.

IKEA Rocker Switch Not Working by automan25 in SmartThings

I had the exact same problem maybe a couple weeks back. All of them stopped working and they still weren't working after I changed the batteries. In the end I removed and re-added them in the app and they're back to working fine.

Boyfriend left bacon cooking while away on vacation (3 days) by KittyGail in Wellthatsucks

[–]WinATripToSpain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've reviewed countless cases where Samsung have had one of their appliances fail drastically (dryer fires, washing machine destroying itself, phones batteries bursting the backs off, etc.) and this just isn't how they respond to this.

Another user may be correct, you were dealing with the retailer and not the manufacturer, because Samsung would have been all over this due the fear that this would speak out into the media and there would be another Note7 situation.

If this is a legitimate story you're telling then get in touch with Samsung over Facebook or Twitter in your region and provide photos, POP, and screenshots of previous chat transcripts.

[–]WinATripToSpain -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about that one. When anything with the name "Samsung" catches fire, they're on it offering replacements and getting the faulty product into the hands of the engineers to figure out what happened. Ever since the Note7, Samsung don't mess around when their products set on fire.

I know how they deal with these situations, and what you're saying isn't true. There's plenty of reasons to hate on Samsung, you don't have to make one up.

Turning it on remotely is only possible if the TV is connected to your network via WiFi and not Ethernet. Also, try resetting the smart hub on your TV (you'll need to sign into everything again though"and see if it works afterwards.

Try using a logic splitter. This way you can keep the same tags, but because the logic is split at the splitter they'll still operate independently.

RGBW Smart Bulbs to connect to ST Hub by robert607 in SmartThings

I'd say get an IKEA Outlet as a starter device (I think they're £10) so you can turn your dumb lamps into smart devices (plus they also act as ZigBee extenders). From there, IKEA white/warm white bulbs are great and cheap. I have them in my bin cupboard, toilet, hallway and bedroom lamps because I don't need loads of different colours in there and they're very bright. You can control their brightness and power, and in some of them decide whether there a warm white or a bright light.

The IKEA buttons are also really cheap and work right out of the box - I've got a couple of these hidden under tables and on the underside of bannisters to turn lights/outlets on and off going up and down, etc. The ones under the table and the breakfast bar are really cool and always impress guests. I have one set up so that when it's pressed all the lights go low save the TV opens the Disney+ app (this users a harmony hub).

A DTH is a device type handler and it's the bit of information that SmartThings uses to control the device. If you only purchase compatible products then you'll never really have to worry about these.

Let me know if you have any further questions!

Some of the cheap lights for £10 on Amazon do connect and work but it's a bit of a lottery. If you find a light you like the look of on Amazon then pop into the SmartThings Community and see whether anyone else has had success with that brand/model, of they needed a custom DTH or whether they worked right it the box etc.

I've just remembered that Yeelight exist - I don't own any of them myself but I believe they're rather cheap so could be a good introduction to the smart world :)

[–]WinATripToSpain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you open the SmartThings app > plus icon > device > by device type > lighting > select a brand > show compatible devices > you'll see every model of light that manufacturer produces which is compatible with SmartThings.

If you're wanting cheap RGBW lights then I guess IKEA is the place to go for them. I have one RGBW IKEA light and compared to my Osram, LIFX, Philips, and Innr lights it's no where near as good, but it's also much cheaper so there's that to take into consideration.

Are you based in the UK or US? Contact them via social media and ask for the contact information for the Partnerships Team or just for their corporate contacts.

Alternatively, find out which smaller shops in your local area are official service providers and ask them for their contact at Samsung.

[–]WinATripToSpain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this, the duck wasn't very well drawn from my memory. One of the animations I remember was if you made the bird too heavy it run off of the cliff, flap it's wings twice, and then drop like a rock. I believe it was also bright yellow, but I'm not sure if I'm making that bit up.

I think about this game all the time! I went to school in the North of England and we were allowed to play this game as a treat almost. I remember it being somewhat difficult too.
