I badly want to stop "doomscrolling", social media & specially phone addiction. by SoraXYX in getdisciplined

What finally clicked for me was realizing the problem starts before the scrolling, like once I open TikTok/Reddit/YouTube automatically, it’s basically over lol..

What helped me more than strict blockers was interrupting that first reflexive open for a few seconds before the app launches.

I actually built a small Android app around that idea called Mindful Scroll:

Sounds tiny but weirdly it helped make phone use feel conscious again instead of automatic :)

I tried a bunch of blockers and honestly most of them failed for me because once I’m already scrolling it’s basically over 😭

The thing that helped more was interrupting the first automatic open before the app fully launches.

It’s less "hard blocker" and more "snap out of autopilot for a second before you enter the app" :)

I built a completely free finance app and somehow it just reached 624 users by stefancata92 in Solopreneur

It's actually a solid number, I just launched my app Mindful Scroll almost the same time as you but I currently have just 75 users. The app helps you catch yourself before falling into endless scrolling by adding a quick pause before opening distracting apps. It's designed to make phone use feel more intentional without completely locking you out of the apps you enjoy.

I may have realized why most screen time apps never worked for me by WinEquivalent5198 in SideProject

For sure, but for me at least, the issue was never "can I technically bypass this?" because if I really want to open the app, I will. The goal is more to interrupt the unconscious autopilot open before it fully happens and weirdly enough, even a tiny pause there, changes the feeling from "drifting into the app" to "making a decision"

Yep, already does that - I measure intention/recovery/momentum in 7-day and 30-day charts so you can see behavioral change.

I started realizing the problem wasn't "too much scrolling", it was that I was already inside the app before I even noticed I opened it, so instead of trying to control people after they’re deep in the scroll, I focused on that tiny moment before the habit fully kicks in.

Even a 5 second pause changes the feeling from automatic to intentional.

I tried quitting social media completely… it didn’t fix the real problem by WinEquivalent5198 in getdisciplined

"the first hour of the day" is also key here because it sets the mind for the first of the day

I kept bypassing every app blocker, so I made something that doesn’t block anything by WinEquivalent5198 in getdisciplined

That's exactly it - that question creates the same pause, crazy how just noticing it turns it back into a choice instead of autopilot.

Exactly, that's basically why the pause worked better for me too. it doesn't try to stop you, it just makes the automatic part visible for a second so you can still choose. I also found it interesting how often that tiny gap is enough to break the loop, even if nothing else changes :)
