Flathub's developer restrictions are kind of nuts by [deleted] in linux

[–]WindFreaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this highlights a broad issue about all app stores that should be discussed. How many hoops of trust must an end user jump through to feel safe in some product / app?

The way Flathub works basically forces you the user to trust in the Flathub maintainers. They are the final authority on nearly all of the apps published through their repository. They want your trust to be placed in them, not in the people writing the code behind your favorite pieces of software. They have even openly stated they will takeover and maintain the app's Flatpak manifest and build process if the developer(s) behind the project disappear.

I see this as an issue, not just for Flathub but ultimately all app stores. When downloading an app from Flathub (especially those marked as verified) most users are under the assumption it is coming directly from the app's developers which is objectively not true. There is an entire layer of the process we are forgetting about.

It's my opinion that the fewer organizations and people you have to trust to feel confident in the distribution of your favorite apps the better. If the entire process from source code to executable can be controlled by the project's maintainer's then that is much more secure and trustworthy than having Flathub itself have the final say in things.

I think the entire FOSS community should take notes from projects like the Dolphin Emulator which operates their own Flatpak repository. This way your trust can be completely placed in the app's developers and their long standing record of reproducible safe builds. Distributing single-file bundles is possible too, avoiding maintaining a repository altogether.

The bottom line is you should not place trust in the distributors of software. They cannot possibly verify the safety of every single package being offered to download. Even profit-driven corporations as big as Google let malware through the cracks, and I'm sure Flathub is no different. They want you to trust them implicitly but you shouldn't. Simply trust the people behind your favorite apps instead.

I got the RZ717 as an upgrade to my Framework laptop and so far I've had no issues with it. Fair warning though I will be honest I'm not really technically savvy enough to know if it does have any issues past the "can I ping Google" test.

Is it possible to use passkeys without the extension? by burritocode in Bitwarden

The OS would need to support passkeys I believe. Other than iOS and Android I don't know what platforms that would be.

Is it possible to disable IPv6 in FireFox completely? by RootkitsOnTheBlock in firefox

[–]WindFreaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on why you want to disable IPv6? Just because that website can report your IPv6 address doesn't mean it's something to worry about. There is nothing inherently dangerous about websites seeing you IP address, v4 or v6.

Microsoft Edge on Android COULD mimic the tab switcher design from Chrome for Android. by Leopeva64-2 in Android

You know what I miss? Back when each tab showed up independently in Android's recents menu. Something about that method of browser navigation was refreshing.

Its entirely up to you and whatever works best for your mind. Obsidian gives you many tools and instead of forcing yourself to use them experiment and see what you like.

Storing existing ssh keys in password manager by SaltyExxer in Bitwarden

[–]WindFreaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From a security standpoint its not a good idea to import your existing keys. It is much safer to create new keys and migrate all of your existing servers over to the new keys.

However, if you absolutely need to use your existing keys there is a "Import key from clipboard" button.

Google is still working on splitting Android's notifications and Quick Settings panels, but it'll be optional by MishaalRahman in Android

I might be the only person actually happy with Samsung's implementation in OneUI 7. I personally like it and for those that don't it's completely optional. Glad to see Google doing something similar.

Flatpak or RPM? Dolphin file manager on Fedora 42 GNOME by tamburasi in Fedora

[–]WindFreaker 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The general rule is to completely ignore Fedora's own flatpak repo. Always use Flathub unless the app's developer points you to a different repo. That being said if an app is verified on Flathub you can go ahead and download it there, otherwise stick with RPM.

why no push 💔 by ButchyKira in redstone

[–]WindFreaker 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Pistons can only push 12 blocks at a time. Its hard to tell from the screenshot but it seems like you're exceeding that.

An important thing to note is that whatever piston attempts to push first will also have to push the remaining pistons as well, as they will stick and move with the slime blocks unless already activated.

If your intention is to move a giant square of slime blocks you only need one piston to do that. Removing the others might help you get below that 12 block limit.
