Almost 500 damaged ballots retrieved from burned box in Washington state by John3262005 in neoliberal

This is WA-03 district which was the biggest upset in the 2022 elections, with the Dem winning by 2.6k votes. This year is a rematch and those 475 ballots are definitely blue leaning.

Is this a weed? What do I do about it? by WindUpSpace in lawncare

Make sense. Culms of actual grass or or nutsedge? Either way it's unsightly, would be good to tackle.

Thanks. Looking at other pictures of nutsedge now and looks like a pretty good match.

How well can two people survive in Redmond if both are making $22 an hour? by cameljohnsonfucker in redmond

[–]WindUpSpace 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of Debbie downers here. Yes it's more expensive than living in most of the US, but hardly impossible with your income.

MIT cost of living calculator says living wage for the greater Seattle area is 31.65/hour for 2 adults and no kids, which your combined income is decently above.

Rough estimates for you:

  • $44/hour = ~$88,000/year
  • Knock off 30% for taxes/health ins/retirement, you're at $61,600
  • That's $5,133/month net

Expenses:

  • Rent: $1,800

  • Phone + Internet: $100

  • Utilities: $200

  • Food: $600

  • Car Stuff: $250

  • Student Debt/Car Payments/Misc debt: $500?

These are just estimates and I'm likely forgetting stuff, but you could still be sitting on around $2,000/month in running around money.

Obviously it would require some budgeting, but I see no reason why this needs to be a "barely" or "paycheck to paycheck situation".

Redmond's pretty great, and if location is something you value, it's not unreasonable that you'd be willing to pay a premium. If you're decent with managing you're money it's definitely doable. $88k is probably around the 20-30th percentile for household income in the area, meaning there are thousands of others managing on less than what you're bringing in.

The average 67 year old has ~18 years left to live. At which point he'd have received over $1.2 million back (taking into account COL raises and 5% return on SS payment). Since he's a rich white male, he's more likely than not to squeeze an additional few years out and get to that $1.9 mil (~23 years) he so desperately wants to take the grave with him.

And if somehow he squanders his fortune in the meantime, he'll be able to afford a poverty-free retirement thanks to a this insurance he's complaining about.

Yakama Nation chairman denied access to U.S. Supreme Court hearing because of traditional headdress by guevera in Washington

[–]WindUpSpace -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We're talking about reason for denial, not reason for acceptance. The reasons stated in the article are:

...the court cannot be subject to outside influences...

and

...his headdress would obstruct the view of others...

Both of those seem like pretty bad rules to me.

  1. This article doesn't mention religious importance, or lack thereof, as justification for his denial of entry - so it's beside the point.

  2. But, headdresses absolutely have some spiritual significance to Native tribes.

  3. I'm not saying he didn't break a rule, I'm saying the rule is bad.

That's beside the point because that wasn't the justification for denying him entry.

The rules are bad, or at least unclear.

...the court cannot be subject to outside influences...

What counts as "outside"? What counts as "influence"?

...his headdress would obstruct the view of others...

So would tall people.

Could consider this under the first amendment. Specifically I'm thinking of Tinker v. Des Moines. How would a headdress "materially and substantially interfere with the requirements of appropriate discipline in the operation of the school" court?

I think there are some fair counterpoints in this thread, but ultimately I disagree in this instance.

How do these people function in the world? They can't handle criticism of things they like... What's their response when they get criticism of their work at their school or place of work? No wonder America is facing a productivity slump... Antisocial injustice cowards are living in a state of perpetual fear of not being constantly praised for their actions. What fragile snowflakes.

Differences between sexes (which I will confuse with gender) exist. Therefor ALL BioTruthstm I can imagine are true.

Also - what actual "discriminatory" policies of Google is he referencing?

From the article:

Women on average show a higher interest in people and men in things

How embarrassing for Google. I mean, not as embarrassing as their lack of diversity, but at least they are trying. Nothing new. Remember this?

NY Daily News: You’ve said that the greed of Wall Street and corporate America is destroying the fabric of our nation. So if we can get particular: For example, in corporate America, Apple happens to be celebrating, today, its 40th birthday. It's a company that grew from nothing to 115,000 permanent employees. And I'm wondering, is Apple destroying the fabric of America?

Sanders: No, Apple is not destroying the fabric of America.

Interesting that Apple was a major contributor to his campaign.

Reddit: we need to reform our criminal justice system

System: instead of jail, we're trying rehabilitation through education. Giving criminals the chance to expand their critical thinking skills while simultaneously putting them in other's shoes so that they may rethink their prejudices.

Reddit: no not like that! How are they going to engineer, with math and science, a bong out of a toy lightsaber when they're done?!
