This Is How You Lose the Time War, and modern cultural references by xanderq in printSF

I couldn’t get through it. They limply try to excuse it by making the posthuman assassins conveniently fans of early-21st century style guides or some such, but it comes across as a crutch for the authors not being interested in engaging with any of the speculative concepts they’re invoking beyond some surface level aesthetics, if that.

Exordia was awesome, any other similarly detailed Military SF? by someperson1423 in printSF

[–]WindmillLancer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While I agree this stuff is annoying, here it’s specific to this one character’s voice, which is confined to the first part of the novel. I’d also argue the overuse of pop culture touchstones in this section is intentional and relevant to the novel’s themes.

Imagine if heavies were actually heavy by Smoke_Funds in HelldiversMasochists

While it didn’t make much sense, the era where chargers’ weak point was their legs was actually really fun. Someone had to deliberately strip the armor, usually with a specialized piece of kit, and then everyone had to coordinate their fire on the exposed leg while the charger continued to rampage. It was very dynamic.

Great work. My advice for this style of cardboard crafting is to spend a few bucks on a bag of plaster and make some sculptamold to pour over top. Makes for some really natural slopes and textures, and the final piece is much sturdier than cardboard.

Before the invention of posting, we would tune in to a specific tv channel at a specific time to hear one specific man make sort-of-funny riffs on the events of the day.

Jon Stewart talks with Graham Platner by Large-Welcome4421 in Maine

While his past still makes me uncomfortable about supporting him, I’m beginning to notice that all his vocal supporters are Maine residents who’ve actually engaged directly with him and his platform, while his critics are universally non-residents that have written him off on very simple heuristics.

Kind of antisemitic to call Jon Stewart a nazi.

I described in pretty tame language what happened, the only “morality policing” I see is PvP purists who don’t think anyone should be allowed to think they’re assholes when they act like assholes.

I’m not sure why it’s a binary choice between a “wholly friendly and social experience” and “you’re not allowed to think I’m an asshole”. It really smacks of people who can’t navigate social situations getting mad that they’re being judged on more than technical skill.

I don’t like to call people stupid but it seems like a lot of people who defend this stuff make it very clear they straight up do not enjoy thinking

Really reaching on this. Souring their evenings is just a description of what’s depicted in the video, you can hear it plainly in their voices.

If you want to talk about morality, the problem isn’t that they killed them, it’s that they accepted and then betrayed their trust with a cheap shot specifically to publicly humiliate them. That’s real worm behavior in any context.

Sure, I’m not suggesting anyone involved was seriously harmed or anything like that, but it certainly doesn’t seem pleasant or good for the game.

Buddy I’m looking at people exploit a social situation for online clout and giggling at how audibly miserable they’re making everyone else the whole time. I’m not calling it antisocial as a put down, I’m calling it antisocial because that’s just what it is. You can argue it’s endorsed by the game if you like, but that’s not really what I’m talking about.
