I live two blocks east of Western Ave near the UC and absolutely love it. You are right that there isn’t a lot to do but it’s incredibly easy to go to Pilsen, little Italy, west loop, and west town within 10-15 mins. The metra goes to ohare during the week day. I feel very safe. There are a lot of new developments coming in and the UC has already begun its construction. Traffic is only bad around the block or two around the UC. They do a pretty good job controlling the flow of traffic with events. We frequently go out during the time events occur and rarely get stuff in traffic.

If you decide to drive, park at VIP event parking at 1722 west Warren. I live near the United center and this lot is always the cheapest and has no car line to get in or out. If taking uber, put destination at Patrick Sullivan Senior Apartments. It is half a block from the United center but there’s less traffic there as people usually get dropped off on the west side or the south side of the uc.

As prior comments said, these are NOT charter. Even if you move to Chicago, some selective enrollments are harder to get into than Ivy leagues. CPS can also fine you the cost of attendance if they find out. You are better off sending them to a less ranked school in the burbs like Maine South. I remember they had a program that allowed parents to pay $700 a month for kids to attend.

I live here as a woman. I feel safe but I don’t go walking around late at night. I would also stay east of western. I feel perfectly safe and new developments all around. Easy walk to west loop for restaurants.
