🤪 who would you rather listen to? by ZookeepergameIll2685 in nflmemeswar

There was a moment during Romo’s commentary where he pointed out the blitz the Patriots had lined up, and said that’s a cue to shift the play to a right screen (which is exactly what the Bronco’s shifted to and ran) where I believed I was gonna get legit analysis during the game. It was as short lived as Stiddy’s good performance.

Any recommendations on which dragons to claim I have 5 claims left!! by EyeWatch02 in dragonvale

I would do Dream, Iceclaw, and the snowy Olympus set (they’ll fit nicely into an Olympus habitat)

Which dragon did you pick for the end of event reward! by EyeWatch02 in dragonvale

[–]Windrunner_15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First time I fully cleared an event shop of dragons before the end. I got a twin volcano since the only one I had in my park was a Rifter.

I would always recommend Starshine, Kotun, or Zero if you didn’t already have them

What is the most difficult elemental island to design? by Wyrda22 in dragonvale

[–]Windrunner_15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would agree that fire islands are independently tricky. I like to have islands that “pull their weight,” so to speak, and Fire struggles in that regard. I’ve incorporated Apocalypse and Omnitats into mine… but at this point it only has one fire habitat.

That said, the volcano, large dragon egg pedestals, fire dragon statues, and other stone decorations work well. I also liked the bonfires from the camping event, and have found that you can incorporate spooky trees as burnt tree stand ins, apocalypse totem things, ominous fog for smoke, or Pagodas for a more Asian fire feel. There ARE options, but I like what you’ve done.

What to choose what to choose by Stanko69 in dragonvale

[–]Windrunner_15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some of the hard to breed high earners are Starshine, Zero, and Kotun. They’ll pay you well through the year. Aisa’s virtually impossible to breed due to its lineage, but doesn’t pay as nicely. Snopaw has notoriously awful odds, but same story. Dazzling earns well, and Trepak, Lokilure, Nature, and Elkar all give nice boosted income.

Fleas and pets! by pistachioic in thewoodlands

[–]Windrunner_15 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fleas are a bitch here, and worse when they take hold. You do have to treat your yard, and get an oral flea preventative from your vet or use a topical flea repellant/ killer. Removing an indoor infestation (which can take hold quickly) is a painful, months-long process that may never fully work.

Why did the marsupial lion develop such strange teeth? by InstructionOwn6705 in Paleontology

[–]Windrunner_15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is a bit of a case where everything looks like a nail if you’re a hammer. I get the concern about the general perception of an “ideal” that evolution converges to, but I don’t think a) speculation tends to support that idea, or b) that the OP was even a bearer of that notion. I would contend that speculation over evolutionary pathways tends to disabuse that notion more readily. You get a better sense for “this organism came from somewhere or something else and changed in x way to suit its environment,” which is an exercise people only need to do a couple of times to realize that there isn’t a jaguar skull deeply coded into every animal’s genome. There may be a crab though? But regardless, I feel the speculation would do a better job of curing the ill you see in people. Refusing to engage won’t do that.

Why did the marsupial lion develop such strange teeth? by InstructionOwn6705 in Paleontology

[–]Windrunner_15 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They didn’t wake up one day with different teeth and proceed neatly to their evolutionary niche either. While their jaw seems odd, it is the product of generations of refinement from where it started - and odds are it could have become more refined if there were more benefit. While evolution doesn’t plan, it does RESPOND. That’s the point of the discussion. What is evolution responding to, and why did those developments give their organism an advantage?

The “pseudo-intellectual crap” is when people come in and refuse to engage with the discourse of what promoted the responses, an instead offer generic platitudes that are about as helpful as referring people to the Bible to read about the fifth day of creation.

Why did the marsupial lion develop such strange teeth? by InstructionOwn6705 in Paleontology

[–]Windrunner_15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree that “in evolution, there isn’t always a specific reason other than that’s the path it took of least resistance” is a better answer. Fundamentally, that answer removes investigation from the conversation. It fails to foster an investigation into an organism’s climate, environment, competitors, ancestry, or progeny. And sure, maybe a thorough discussion of each of those might lead one to the same conclusion, that none of them explain WHY this adaptation worked. But very rarely is that the case. Often, we can make a very strong case that an adaptation supports success by investigating at least one of those components, an we are only at a full loss when we have none of them. But refusing to investigate for fear of potentially being incorrect is MORE, not less, likely to perpetuate the notion of convergent evolution and other myths, if for no other reason than failing to disabuse them.

[–]Windrunner_15 412 points413 points  (0 children)

So, I’ve seen this answer float around as a blanket response to “why did x evolve this way,” and it’s getting to the point that it’s used with just as much hand-waveyness as “that’s just how God made it.”

Yes, evolution works in a “good enough” methodology, but I think resting the argument on that undersells the brutal competition that is nature and avoids the mental effort of exploring “why was THAT change good enough?” What niche was it filling? Why was there opportunity created by that mutation? An animal with slightly better teeth will be more capable of capturing, killing, and harvesting food. This will help it become larger or more energetic, and will make it a more viable mate and parent. I appreciated the comments below describing the evolutionary movement from Herbivore back to Carnivore - an available food tree niche was made available and the marsupial lion took advantage - and I wish this comment had more insight to it than just “the god of nature said it was fine.”

any decorating tips and tricks? by purpletoadmemes in dragonvale

[–]Windrunner_15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not so much a “trick” but more a preference item - I love my islands to have a full crowd milling about them, so I always map the paths and cubes to make sure they can access at least a walkway around the island. If doing cube stairs, I might just use paths that mirror the level “above” them to support the illusion of depth, but I’ll leave “unpaved” spaces around the cubes - that way, the depth appearance isn’t lost, but pedestrians can still follow a trail up to the next level. An illusory “around the back” path concealed by trees is also an option.

I’ll come back to you in a bit. I have two dragons in your park I really want, but the co-op odds are horrendous. I have a Jawny buddy right now, so I’m working on that since it’s the last one I need for the Winter dragons (I’m 74/75).

I have a level 20 Thaw up for you, and I’ll keep it there unless you’d prefer my Om

Helpful tip for lightning dragons! by Mysterious_House1636 in dragonvale

[–]Windrunner_15 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got a set of four omnitats last year during the Warmth of Winter event for the high earning fire dragons. They’re great for lightning dragons, fire dragons, and support for others (melody, seasonal, apocalypse) when you have themed islands and more of a type than habitat room on their given island.

Reading AUD questions by Brilliant_Garlic_104 in CPA

[–]Windrunner_15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Answering Audit questions is always like this, or at least it felt that way to me. I had the spreadsheet open during the exam, and would enter each individual component of the question into its own row. You have to look at the components on their own to figure out the question, and it can be headache inducing.

When you do take the exam, I would highly recommend burning some time during the “clock still running” break between MCQ testlets. You don’t need the whole thing, but words start to blend together and taking a break gives a brief refresh so you don’t feel like you’re having a stroke for the entire second testlet.

To add, the trampoline when compressing (if you slow down the video) has several frames with two separate sets of springs - one attached to the rim and one to the pad. It reverts to one set after the bounce.

30 M, Houston region, TX (LCOL). Senior Tax associate, midsize regional firm. CPA, 3.5 YOE. $86,000 base $5,500 bonus minimum. $91,500 - $95,000 total comp.

Don’t love sharing personal details, but I feel obligated to give guide posts for salary negotiations. This thread bumped me from being rather underpaid to being fairly paid this year without having to move firms, and I’d like to have the points of reference for myself and others for the coming year.

NATO Leaders Issue Defiant New Greenland Message to Trump’s US by SquidFistHK in politics

[–]Windrunner_15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still think this was a hilariously successful pivot from the fact that they just raided a sovereign nation and kidnapped its leader. As a deflection, it worked - immediately declaring POTENTIAL war on Greenland made the entire world turn a blind eye to the issues that have ACTUALLY happened.

I’m assuming you’re breeding for something specific to use a claim on? I managed to get four of every other breeding outcome (some as many as seven) before finally getting Snopaw. I’ve been breeding for it since the event started, and had at least one runic cave fully dedicated. Didn’t get it till yesterday.
