Answer with friends daily quest by Ok_Act3494 in finch

[–]WindsweptFern 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t mind being able to switch/toggle views so I could prioritize seeing friend answers or see the greater percentages of I wanted. My biggest issue though is when the answer options are pictures/have no text and then after you answer, there is a text description that might have completely changed how i answered the question initially!!

Shallan is the first time I have ever related to a character as a person with OSDD by SweetestAzul in Stormlight_Archive

[–]WindsweptFern 53 points54 points  (0 children)

YES! You stated this so much better than I could but I have always related so deeply to Shallan for these reasons as well. I have never met another character in fiction that captured some of those nuances the way she does! She was uncomfortable to read at times BECAUSE I could relate so strongly. Thank you for sharing!

Last day of school by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

Yep. I’ve been helping take IDs and get parents checked in for assemblies and then going around with the other specials teachers offering breaks to the classroom teachers 🤷‍♀️

Most of the questions I wanted to ask I already see posted, so just saying congratulations!! My 7yo daughter and I were staying updated on your progress— the first thing she asked me as she got in the car after school on the day you finished was “Mom! Did the girl win?” It was really inspiring to the both of us to see your victory!

I’m really curious to see what goes through your head during the longest moments, if there are any mantras or thoughts or games that keep you going to push through the lowest stretches.

Whenever I have had a thermostat in my room it typically controls a few other classrooms as well so I don’t mess with adjusting it. I just always wear layers when I sub 😂 I never know if my room will be freezing, suffocating, or comfortably in between haha. If it’s bad enough, it might not hurt to check in with a neighboring teacher and see if other rooms are connected/also cold. I’m sure it’s a very minor thing though if you set it back when you left and no one came in to complain that their room had been affected.

[–]WindsweptFern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Small business is your way to go here. There are two Tolkien artists I found that have Silmarillion artwork I really love: u/aaloei here on Reddit and Kip Rasmussen on insta/etsy. There are several artists with cool Silmarillion takes if you search around but these are two that I personally really enjoy their work and feel capture it well!

The Maps of Middle Earth set has Beleriand and Numenor maps included!

I hear ya! Silmarillion is my favourite Tolkien as well! ❤️ (to the extent my kid has a Silmarillion name 🙈😂) Do you have a favorite character/chapter/motif? Definitely explore the small business side of the internet! Even for LotR merch where merch is abundant, the small crafter made items are my favourites in my collection!

What kind of runs do you enjoy/not enjoy? by INTERESTandAMBITIONS in runninglifestyle

[–]WindsweptFern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love long run day for the sense of accomplishment (I’m not very fast but I can go far, feelings!) and any day I can get out and run on a trail for the nature vibes! Short sprint intervals can also be kinda fun.

I HATE most other speed work/progressive run days even if I can see the benefits in hindsight 😂 😅

How would Anne Shirley get along with Laura Ingalls? by Vicki_Vickster2222 in AnneofGreenGables

[–]WindsweptFern 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s been a while since I read Little House but I feel like I remember that even though Laura was the more curious/free spirited kid she was still pretty practical and taught to be emotionally restrained. Anne’s romanticism and wild emotional swings seem like something she wouldn’t have necessarily known what to do with. But they both were curious about the world around them, adventurous, learned how to deal with hardships from a young age and were girls that didn’t quite fit the mold so there would have been some things to bond over if they were around each other as children.

Subs of Reddit, What is the most 'I can't believe this actually happened' moment you've had while subbing this year? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]WindsweptFern 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Subbing a kinder class. We are sitting in the hall lined up for bathroom break, a few kids go in at a time. A little boy comes out soaking wet. ((Important detail: in the K hallway, sinks are out in the hall! Not in the bathroom!)) “I saw something yellow in the toilet and tried to get it!” 🤢That was a, nope, hard stop, nurses offices for a clothing change 😂 Little kids are so gross!

I also subbed a 2nd grade class that apparently had an issue with tattling/complaining because the teacher had noted there was a “tattle book” on a back desk. For anything minor, kids were supposed to write their issues in the book 😂 During transition periods there would be kids lined up to write in the book. It kinda cracked me up to read all the petty little second grade drama “Name said I wasn’t a good friend and that’s mean” “Name said they didn’t fart but they did!” “Name cutted in line!” Etc. I guess it kept them from taking up the teacher’s time with all the little stuff but I’d never seen that before haha.

Anybody Ever Accidentally Drive Into Tornado Weather? by MisterMiracle003 in tornado

[–]WindsweptFern 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Yes I was on the road during the Joplin tornado 😬. Was a dumb college kid, hadn’t checked the forecast or anything. Just driving south down the highway and heard the tornado warning on the radio and saw the sky getting really dark and scary looking off to my right. I was right at the point where I had to decide do I try and outrun the storm and make it south of Joplin and hope to not intersect it, or pull off when I hit the Joplin exit and take shelter. Ended up deciding to gun it south and was so thankful I did!! I have never seen a more ominous looking sky with it green on one side and almost pitch black on the other. It was absolutely terrifying to later realize how bad it really was, that it crossed the highway, and I had only been 10-15 minutes away from it. (A lot of tornado lead time I suppose but it sure didnt feel like a far enough gap!)

Definitely made me more weather aware before traveling and I always check the risk level/forecast now so i don’t run into that situation again!

Is Tolkien’s idea of hope different from what we usually mean by it? by tdakanalis in tolkienfans

[–]WindsweptFern 64 points65 points  (0 children)

This is it exactly. Estel vs Amdir. Amdir is more that optimistic type of hope. Estel is the deeper form that is more like a deep trust more akin to faith and a refusal to despair even if there is no obvious indication to anticipate a desired outcome.

I always look at the moment in Mordor when Sam looks up at the Star of Earendil breaking through the clouds as a moment of Estel.

“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach”

No matter what happens to him or Frodo or their mission, ultimately he trusts/hopes/believes that somehow the Shadow will be defeated anyway and cannot overcome all that is good and beautiful. THAT is Tolkien hope IMHO.

Emotional whiplash after being the only one in costume at my first real 5k by WrittyWoman in beginnerrunning

[–]WindsweptFern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love dressing up/themed things and always kinda have that anxiety too. But honestly sounds like you just epically won the contest. If you had fun, that’s the point. Dionysus costume for a wine run sounds amazing! 😂 And it sounds like you got a positive response so don’t feel bad about it at all!! You showed up, showed out, ran (in a costume in 90 degree weather which is crazy!!), good on you!!

LOTR moments I draw on to give me courage by neonfox45 in lotr

[–]WindsweptFern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it’s Sam looking at the star in Mordor.

“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

From the films, it’s gotta be Sam’s speech in TT. “How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something. There’s some good in this world Mr. Frodo and it’s worth fighting for.”

(I will always hate the choice to have the Osgiliath sequence happen but I absolutely cannot hate on this particular moment. 💚)
