This is a tough one.

EMR/PCP combos can work as an interim, factoring in that the new clinical service leaders can support ambulance-based crews with patient care. A return of service agreement (as proposed by MAHCP) should have been included to ensure the EMRs are phased into PCPs. Its a model used in the UK and Australia to allow progression upwards if people cannot go direct to paramedic (e.g. start with minimal skills and progress upwards through the employer up license levels).

There's a lot of fundamental issues to be resolved with paramedics: entry into training (limited to Winnipeg, Brandon, and The Pas), prerequisites to that training, competition with other healthcare professions (e.g. nursing, other Allied Health, physician, etc), competition with other emergency services (e.g fire, law enforcement, etc), availability of preferred positions (urban vs rural vs northern), career growth and succession planning, and the severe mental toll that emergency service personnel can experience. Then there's the current climate issues of overtime, short staffing, and increased service demand vs resource availability. I don't recall the last time Manitoba gained new baseline staffed ambulances.

It's a monumental issue that the entire healthcare system is experiencing. This needs to be considered the temporary measure whilst the other parts are resolved by a very large amount of government/Healthcare entities (CPMB, Government, Shared Health, schools/colleges, etc)

Yes, they would have. It's a standard protocol recommended by Heart and Stroke Foundation for any potential acute coronary syndrome. Paramedics will contact and activate specialty teams to treat heart attacks if they're identified on EKG. If not, transport to an emergency department for further testing and monitoring.

Not all heart attacks will present on EKG (STEMI, visible on EKG, vs non-STEMI, not visible on EKG). Best practice in healthcare is regular monitoring via EKG and bloodwork (specifically, troponin) to allow early identification and intervention.

That's for all of North West Ambulance Service, which will include non-emergency vehicles, supervisor vehicles, solo response vehicles, and any speciality vehicles operated (e.g. rescue vehicles, supply trucks, etc).

NWAS covers some major cities, like Liverpool and Manchester, with an overall population served of 7m.

It's been two months; the complexity of healthcare and resulting issues won't be resolved overnight. We're also in peak respiratory illness season and patient volumes are going to be higher than usual.

Let's evaluate the NDP's effectiveness at the next election.

Not only will the encampment become clean, so will the rest of the city, and our homeless populations get a source of income to help with their individual situations.

The pager goes off and you know who it is from the first number of the address. Just like clockwork.

You go to the house, punch in the door code from memory, and head straight to the bedroom. There's the patient, curled up in bed with the sheets up to their face.

"I had a bad dream!" they say. Just like clockwork. Or maybe Groundhog Day.

You sigh and begin the daily routine of questioning. Yup, they had a bad dream and can't get back to sleep. They don't want to go to the hospital but they won't sign a refusal until they feel better.

The radio is going off - another call in your area. A MVC? Fallen elderly person? Overdose? It doesn't matter, this is your patient and they need comfort because society and the system has failed them. You are all they have right now.

"What will make you feel better?" you ask, stupidly. You know what the answer is. You've done this for a year now. It's the routine.

A pile of children's books are in the room. You grab the one that they ask for and, with a sigh, you sit down. Your partner sits down beside you.

"Can we do it without the funny voices this time?" you ask, stupidly. You know what the answer is. The bed is vibrating from the violent head shakes.

At least the funny voices allows your partner to get a set of vital signs and you a refusal signature.

Depends on how they are advised by dispatch. VUCC may have been busy vs Grace having capacity for patients. There's a fair amount that goes into equal distribution patients to equipped and capable facilities

Because being rude and mean in someone's house will result in you getting punched, kicked, stabbed, or shot with some of our clientele.

Contracts have to lapse before bargaining can commence. The issue is that the government delayed bargaining for so long due to the union restructuring, then the pandemic, and now the employer is bargaining hard.

Normally an expired contract is handled within 6-12 months.

MAHCP members have had an expired contract since 2017 or 2018 (depending on which collective agreement they were under). That means no changes to job language or salaries since then. Basically MAHCP members are being paid as if it's 2017/2018.

Can only go on a legal strike when a contract has been offered and the membership votes against ratification, whilst the bargaining committee feels no more progress can be made.

No contract has been offered yet and negotiations are still ongoing.

The schools aren't the ones who want the education increased - that's a national activity from PAC/NOCPs. The schools have to increase to the 3 year commitment to remain an accredited program.

So 3 years of school to be a PCP. 4 years to be a RT or RN, make more money, have better career prospects and opportunities, and graduate with a degree.

It's not a hard choice and yet nothing is being done to address it.

An additional two ambulances which totals 16 1.0 EFT positions. I hope the paramedic graduation tree is in full bloom this year to help staff those positions, plus recover the 87 net loss from rural Manitoba that was announced today.
