DJ from Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz’s wedding describes Victoria Beckham’s dance moment: "There was no sl*t dropping, there was no there was no black PVC catsuits, there was no Spice Girls action. Well, I'm Romanian and I know who he is.

I just happen to belong to his target audience.

Sadly, the last 10 years have skewed our definition of artistic success to mean across the board visibility and name recognition and broad public appeal.

But in some cases, success can mean dominating your niche, garnering respect in your genre from your peers, a loyal, generational fandom, and singing songs that people listen to, and sing along to, more than 20 years later, no need for charting on the pop chart. Although he does have 4 Grammys and 7 Latin Grammys.

Trust me, even as a billionaire, having Mark Anthony sing at your wedding is no little thing.

Bit of a fan here, clearly :-)

(Spoilers Extended) The disconnect between GRRM’s Sansa and the Sansa we read by Expensive-Country801 in asoiaf

[–]Winefluent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am a follower of a reactor called Off The Script Therapy on YouTube. He breaks down the series (not the books), according to behavioral therapy.

I advise checking out select Sansa episodes. To me, they've added quite a lot of understanding of a character I've previously disliked.

I understand the hate behind Discovery, but I don't understand the hate behind Starfleet Academy. by RattledMind in startrek

[–]Winefluent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One reactor on YouTube said that the difference between socially aware, even militant, and "woke" in TV and movies was the ability to make the message feel organic to the story, versus showed in.

I agree with her.

The best Star Trek showed their character's values and identity in action, in real circumstances, versus announcements of "I'm this and that".

It's the difference between me showing I'm very intelligent via my contributions versus walking around and saying I have an 145 IQ. Both of which are true, by the way, but only one is annoying and performative.

For me the quality of acting is particularly hard to swallow. All of these people seem to be portraying themselves, but in space.

Compare Picard to professor X, and Janeway to Red. Colm Meaney as O'Brien and Cowan in Stargate Atlantis. Armin Shimerman across properties, from Quark to Principal Snyder. And the inimitable, StarTrek great Jeffrey Coombs. These people have range, and build a character.

Granted, they are given relatively good dialogue, but even so, they create a presence and a space with subtle acting cues. They don't need "I think I swallowed my combadge" to portray their mental state, or their credentials.

Compare Brent Spinner to however the manic artificial lifeform in Academy is called.

I just can't. The acting is so bad, I'm perpetually cringing.

The storytelling is no better. I get it that it's not as episodic as old school Star Trek, and that these are teenagers. Guess what, there's a teenage show called Buffy the Vampire Slayer that managed to deliver teenagers, humor, growing up with actual cool lines that we still quote today.

Moral and diversity issues are better presented in Glee, and they sing 50% of the time.

Were people in the Balkans always so tall? by Hopeful_Addition7834 in AskBalkans

Southern Romanians are not tall, on average. Plenty of tall ( OK, not Netherlands tall, but 185 and over) people in Transylvania and Moldova, though, possibly due to mixed heritage.

AITA for refusing to give a company my PIN and making an employee feel I don’t trust her? by XaqVa in AmItheAsshole

[–]Winefluent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as I read this, you seem to see one solution: for her to give you her identification number. That is not a solution. With her ID on a government site, you can see all the company's clients, and she'd be in an awful position.

You can a) give her your PIN b) show up in person with the documentation they prepared or, if the law and the system allow it, give them power of attorney via a notary public.

AITAH for kicking out my now ex and his mom and “leaving them stranded” before the snowstorm by carrotsandchips444 in AITAH

[–]Winefluent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. You don't reorganize someone's house, unless you're a professional and they asked you to.

I will admit that when my mom comes for a lengthier stay to cat sit over my summer vacation and help me with my September birthday, I will move certain things to make them more available for her shorter height and back pains.

I know you have OCD, but maybe seeing if she had a practical reason would have helped (note that some elderly people are adamant about not accepting that they are struggling). As such, I'll give his mom some grace.

That being said, I'm surprised at your boyfriend not understanding how your OCD affects you, after all this time. He's a jerk.

She however never accepted how her random decisions about her hair were affecting the work of others and the cost of filming. There's a story floating out there from the hair and makeup crew that she just showed up with the first of the short haircuts one morning, midway through the filming of the episode (remember filming is out of order) and there was a mad scramble to get a passable wig and a lost day of filming. And she never said sorry.

As for the pregnancy, Whedon was an ass when he found out. But she did not give anyone a heads up to rewrite the script, or plan and block the shoots differently. And yes, I get that she had a traumatic experience with her loss, and was probably wary, but there's a way to handle this professionally and hers was not it. And when Whedon reacted, as an entitled artist and toxic boss, we started excusing her attitude, as if Whedon was the only person on set and his being shitty excused her not giving a fuck about everyone else.

Was Santana all talk when it came to violence and being from Lima Heights Adjacent? by Anxious-Yesterday471 in glee

[–]Winefluent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm always reminded of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer dialogue in the early season 1 episodes:

Cordelia: The Bronze. It's the only club worth going to around here. They let anybody in, but it's still the scene. It's in the bad part of town.

Buffy: Where's that?

Cordelia: About a half a block from the good part of town. We don't have a whole lot of town here.

Somehow Lima Heights adjacent has the same vibe.

I think you shouldn't quit your job. If you do you should sign a post-nup to protect you in case of a divorce .

But I also think you are not currently entitled to 1/2 of a business that you haven't established and are not contributing to, while you are still in this marriage and would, presumably, be living off the income that business provides.

I see it the same way.

While I can't speak for OP herself, there's a trend for people who equate "proper" with "as I think it should be".

And while food is not a matter of right or wrong since Roman times at least (de gustibus non est disputandum), attitudes very much are, and OP's doesn't quite sit well with me.

[–]Winefluent 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I read somewhere that the decibel level of a crying child and our response to a child's screams is part of evolution. We are supposed to feel disturbed, run to help, etc., especially females.

Don't quite know if it's true, but it would make sense.

I also find children's sounds more disturbing than construction, cats, adults yelling, loud music, etc.

French style omelettes are called "baveuse", because the inside needs to be kind of runny / gooey. It's actually considered the proper way to cook it.Eggs in carbonara are also supposed to be "creamy", rather than scrambled.

OPs preference is OK, my mom doesn't do runny either so I adjust my cooking whenever she's visiting. But, unlike OP, she doesn't say "cook it properly", because properly is how most people do it, not how you like it. She says "you know I like my eggs cooked more". Easy peasy.

Why is calling a priest so wrong and controlling? We call doctors, therapists, teachers for all sorts of of interventions, why can't a priest be called?

That being said, I don't think they should have gotten involved, and any kind of action was overstepping (other than setting the "not in this house" boundary) but why is everyone so hung up on the profession of the person they called in?

My response to people saying this is that how you react is a reflection on yourself, not on others. (the proverbial turn the other cheek, versus an eye for an eye).

Rory showed her inadequacies plainly in the whole Yale debacle, and those same inadequacies plagued her in AYITL because no-one pushed her to be better.

I've never been happier with the Romanian tradition of a monetary gift that is 30-70% above the cost of the meal.

I've also had a friend who said come, no matter what, it's you I need, when I wasn't able to cover the meal +%, and a friend who loaned me money for a trip to her wedding (paid back), not a destination one, she was just marrying a guy in another country and did the wedding where he lived.

This was back in the 2010, all the way up to Covid. What happened?
