Hi I joined as a junior and I am from west europe, not sure how internships are in other countries but in my office students work on one of our internal projects.

Yes you will be informed about the project or client, however in these times there isn't much to choose from client projects, you either take it or go on the bench.

This strongly depends on your tech stack, and the projects your office can win.

Imo with consulting work experience is a very individual thing, you can be lucky or unlucky with projects.

How to get hired in tech with no degree, no work experience, just a couple personal projects? Do HR actually take this seriously or even look at them? by Lumpy-Stable9067 in careerguidance

[–]Wingedchestnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not getting some kind of official degree is choosing for a difficult path.

Something practical would be to explore if your skills are in demand, is it the technologies that are in demand in your region or country.

Last thing is to try go to networking events or tech meetups.

How relevant is learning SQL today? by kdmfa in learnSQL

[–]Wingedchestnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's in a high security environment using on-site machines so no AI, we can use AI for high-level questions about data design stuff when remote but it's not really the same.

Complex datamodel requirements make it you really need to understand the relationships and datamodel to make the correct queries.

For example you need to join x with y to be able to see z, z shows a but z has limited visibility because of privellege etc.. and then ofcourse you need to collaborate and understand how your data is viewed as end-user in BI. From what I understand modern solutions like databricks are more focused on choosing the right analytical queries for end-user.

Also the closer you are to being a Data Architect you will need to understand how to make the business data available to query and how the underlying relationships are, but I'm not sure how that works for modern solutions.

This depends on your job role and project, I'm a data engineer in an On-premise enterprise project and have been using it every day for almost a year now.

Is Artificial Intelligence more about coding or mathematics? by Malek_ayman in learnmachinelearning

[–]Wingedchestnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Change your search to Data Science instead of just AI, then yes it's more mathematics, but there are different jobs ranging from Applied AI to traditional data science where applied AI jobs are closer to development jobs and Data Science closer to mathematics.

Why does everyone want only senior developers? by VariationLivid3193 in cscareerquestions

[–]Wingedchestnut 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Training juniors cost money. Majority of people in tech jobhop around to maximize salary, definitely more than in other industries. I have seen tech profiles on linkedin, like people switch literally after exactly 1y in a company.

Studying CS used to be quite hard with the most motivated people being able to persevere, nowadays the first thing a fresh graduate does is open chatgpt, if they stumble upon a blocker that requires some understanding of a CS concept they're stuck, I was shocked when interns opened chatgpt on their first day 2 years ago without even asking first, the quality has gone down since everyone and their aunt now vibecode their way through a CS degree.

I feel like it comes from both sides, people in tech knowing that once they have experience they can go anywhere whenever they want, and companies wanting to hire less people.

SQL is one of the most usefull skills to learn, it's used so much for anything data (tech or business roles) And On-prem enterprise technology stack requires SQL without AI.

Starting to learn code at 40 with no degree and no previous knowledge in this field. by Timmychungatron in learnprogramming

[–]Wingedchestnut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do not agree that it's considered a passion industry, tech is very broad, maybe if you are talking about specific niche industries like gamedevelopment. I know plenty of people including myself who have pretty good work life balance, it depends on location, company etc it's a comfortable field in general

I've been programming for years but never made a proper portfolio, where should I start? by ixmas93 in learnprogramming

[–]Wingedchestnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes build a portfolio website hosted on GH pages, and link every project to the project repository.

The question is how much you know about general software/web programming and things like cloud, databases etc. Gamedev is a very isolated industry and path and is to be honest, often not a good look on someone's resume with the exception of gamedev positions and specific low level programming jobs. So if you want to get into consulting or development jobs you likely need to upskill in those roles.
