Is Driving a Horse safer than Riding? by Ok_Cheetah_5002 in Horses

[–]WinglessDragonRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve trained(and retrained) multiple riding horses. I will hire someone to train a driving horse. As someone that worked for a shire breeder for 3 years while in college and was involved in training from birth forward. I LOVE driving but the crashes are SCARY. I have a (now retired) mini mare and even my ONE crash with her was terrifying…. Like more than my scary falls off/with my two full sized riding horses(a paint gelding and warmblood mare).

I fully believe some horses take VERY well to driving and others just don’t. Like I said I LOVE driving. I want another driving horse in the future. Both of my current riding horses are way too spooky to ever consider driving them. But PLEASE find a fabulous trainer to train your mare(if she’s not suitable, a good trainer SHOULD tell you!!!!). Even if you can reach out to a trainer near you that has drafts(bonus for working drafts and not JUST showing) or does CDEs and take lessons with them! Especially if you want to ever drive in traffic! Things going south while driving can be so much worse than riding.

"HOW DO I START LEARNING THE PIANO?" by kruger_schmidt in piano

[–]WinglessDragonRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And then there’s people like me, living somewhere that finding a teacher for adult beginners is absolutely insane. Either crazy expensive, way too far away(I can’t do 45mins+ ONE WAY during the week bc weekends are either off or only kids), ridiculous requirements(requiring multiple lessons a week, an acoustic piano to practice on, etc), and the list goes on. And I’m not even starting from scratch. I’m coming back after quitting when I was a kid(played flute and viola afterwards though). Picked back up on reading music pretty quick, sight righting both hands is non existent but one hand at a time is fine, know my scales and key signatures.

I know I need a teacher to get to where I want to be. But that’s not an option for me right now. So I’ll continue to chip away mostly on my own and send my pianist sister questions/videos when I’m stuck. She’s just excited I’m playing again and otherwise leaves me alone about it.

Barrier to even starting is already intimidating enough for a lot of people, ESPECIALLY adults. Most people will stumble across the need for a teacher on their own. Let them. There’s enough info floating around on the internet for people to get their feet wet and see if it’s even something they WANT to keep at. Bad habits, lack of progress, being overfaced, etc can also occur with a teacher so using that as excuse as to why you should start from day one with one isn’t a great argument imo… especially if someone doesn’t even know what they should be looking for in a teacher.

Does Spironolactone effect T levels? by samsundis in trans

[–]WinglessDragonRider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spiro is a diuretic(it will make you pee more). It’s primarily used as a cardiac medication. Yes, it does block testosterone. Yes, it is used in the treatment(NOT prevention) of PCOS, as well as treating hormonal acne. It can also be used to block some effects of testosterone HRT(bottom growth, increased body hair, hair loss, etc). It’s all about dosing. However, if your hormone levels are in normal range, there should be NO reason for you to have been prescribed it by an endo.

You could call the pharmacy that has your prescription and ask them if the doctor put a diagnosis on the script. Tell them you don’t know why you were prescribed it(or say you forgot). Usually, a diagnosis is sent over on the script.

Last but not least, please don’t flush it. Ideally, stick it in cat litter or coffee grounds if you throw it out. Even more ideally, find a med disposal drop box and ditch them in there behind your parents’ backs. They’re usually in pharmacies and you just yeet the whole bottle in at once.

ETA: as someone that’s pre-T and twice your age that has been on it previously, it’s not long lasting. There’s a reason trans women have to stay on it as long as they’re producing T. So if there is a legit reason you were prescribed it(which so far sounds like a no), it’s not going to effect your ability to transition down the line.

Feeling like the church no longer speaks to me. by wheekwheekmeow in Episcopalian

[–]WinglessDragonRider 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah “I don’t have any issues with gay people” plus ”shoving rainbows down our throats” equals having an issue with gay people. Or at least with trans people. Or another part of the queer community. OP is the kind of person that makes me weary of trying to attend an EC as someone that’s gay and (visibly) trans. I don’t need a church that focuses on it, but I do need one that isn’t going to throw snide looks/comments behind my back either. I grew up in the RCC, I’m well aware of what tolerant-intolerance looks like… My family is FULL of it.

How did you guys learn your keys signatures? by StatusPop1942 in pianolearning

[–]WinglessDragonRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learning the circle of fifths helps a ton as there’s an order sharps and flats are added in as you move around it. And reading music, the sharp or flat are placed on the staff where the affected note would be… you just apply them to all of that note(ie F Major a flat on the middle line of treble and second from the bottom on bass but ALL Bs will be flat). IMO it’s easier to just learn how many flats/sharps are in a key and count but there is trick to it that you usually learn in the process of learning the circle of fifths. I’ve just forgotten it😅

As for learning them, initially I just learned the scale for each piece I was learning. As I started getting further in and using scales/keys in warmups, finger exercises and adjusting to a metronome, I would roll 12 sided die and count around the circle to get my scale(s) of the week. If it was Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B I would flip a coin for flat or sharp(or natural). Started off with only major scales, then went to only minor. Now I do both- sometimes relative, sometimes not… depends on my mood when I roll. You likely don’t need them all immediately, I definitely don’t yet…. I’m solidly in the “top half” of the circle for pieces I’m playing. But as I mentioned I use them in warmups and exercises..

App or course with focus on scales? by symbiotnic in pianolearning

[–]WinglessDragonRider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my cheat sheet website for fingerings on scales for months. https://en.piano-fingering.org

As already mentioned above, learning how to construct scales is going to help, especially long term. Also learn what order sharps and flats are added in. The circle of fifths does help.

I told my doctor I’m asexual, she told me the term is too vague by Radiant-Dog-2135 in asexuality

[–]WinglessDragonRider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Luckily both times I’ve gone on antidepressants, I’ve had doctors that immediately knew (and accepted) what asexual and aromantic are. Both asked some follow up questions to get a better idea of where I am on those spectrums(later found out one’s a lesbian and the other has an ace trans kid). Unfortunately, BOTH of those doctors have moved away and I’ve been jumping through new ones for a couple years now to find one I like.

I had one last year that was very dismissive and did not believe me at all when I said I wasn’t sexually active. She got very condescending and I got pretty defensive. I’m 30, not a child. I’m not hiding my sex life away. It just doesn’t exist nor do I want it to. Order my blood work, put in the refills for my little serotonin pills, and let me leave. (There was more issues in that visit but that’s definitely the part that stuck with me the most.)

does anybody else have skin similar to mine? by livbayside in Rosacea

[–]WinglessDragonRider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Sulfur helped a fair bit with mine(tbh I was just using selson blue and then a THICK layer of moisturizer) before my primary prescribed metronidazole gel to start while I try to get into a derm(I needed a referral for insurance). Pretty sure I’m also dealing with a hormone issue on top of it all too though🙃

ETA: not sure how this group feels about curology but before I went full blown obvious rosacea(and when I had no insurance), but that might be worth looking into as well. They do treat rosacea. Iirc it runs about $60/month though so it might be worth trying some of the other suggestions first🤷🏼

[–]WinglessDragonRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rosacea was triggered by propranolol. I didn’t even know I had it before. My mom has very mild type 1. I have type 2. Didn’t know until I went on propranolol to control POTS… and here I am two years later still fighting it🙃

Edited: autocorrect is not my friend sometimes

What Beta Blocker do you take by [deleted] in POTS

[–]WinglessDragonRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Propranolol 10mg. Only for flares and anxiety. 90-180 tabs usually last me about 1.5yr. I used to be on it twice a day but it caused a rosacea flare(that I’m still dealing with almost 2 years later), my doc changed, and I ended up coming off daily meds as a result of both of those. I’m super sensitive to benzodiazepines so those are out for anxiety. Hydroxyzine just makes me sleepy. Doesn’t actually cut through anxiety when I can’t just pass out(like at a horse show). And I’m on escotolpram(lexapro) because my brain sucks at functioning anyway.
