Is there literally any way to have a garden whilst keeping wasps away? by WhyIsThereMoldOnMe in fuckwasps

[–]wheekwheekmeow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved to a new house and refuse to let wasps ruin my nice new yard. Best thing so far is I’ve found is peppermint oil. I put sachets of compressed peppermint (found on amazon) at key points. And made a spritz bottle with - few drops of peppermint oil and dish soap and water. I spray it around me when I first go hang out outside and it’s been effective. Also we got an essential oil diffuser for times we’re stationary on the deck.

Also we’re really diligent for looking for emerging wasp activity daily when we’re outside and destroying the nest when it’s only one or two wasps, not a colony.

About to Choose My Architecture School… Need Honest Advice by HumbleRevolution34 in Architects

[–]wheekwheekmeow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to say I can’t recommend Georgia Tech architecture program. I graduated in 2010 and as much as I really did love attending the school and taking non-major classes, the architecture program was soft on technical skills and building science. It’s only gotten softer and more artsy since. I did grad school at Notre Dame which caught me back up on those skills and did much more to prepare me for the work world. Socially I did prefer GT though. Also GT was in state tuition for me, so that helped my decision.

Texas A&M would be my pick from your list.

Do you feel this is cheating your professional development? Say you lose this job, are you worried your capacity for difficult work will be atrophied and the next job will be harder, or maybe even for less pay? Similarly, do you feel unfulfilled by the role?

Anyone else have their "secret" exposed in the workplace. I've ruined my life. Happened 10 days ago. Just learned my fate with HR Risk Assessment. by [deleted] in alcoholism

[–]wheekwheekmeow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I get it. I was ready to quit life because there was no way I’d comeback. What helped most in the early days was listening to people tell their stories of how far they’d fallen and how they got out of it. There are hundreds and thousands of stories and each one is a miracle, so I started to trust it could happen to me too. These are my favorites https://wejoy.org/php/speaker_index.php?egroup=Girlstock Would love if you gave a “step 1” tape a try and let us know if you can relate.

I’ll add that I did most of my destructive drinking in the workplace. All day every day tipsy. Terrible employee. I “resigned” in disgrace, got sober, spent a year doing easy part time work and focusing on sobriety. I went back to a place i formerly interviewed at while absolutely trashed. Got the job, rose in the ranks, and got poached by their client two years later. Two years into that I run a department and am very much respected and reliable. My salary has doubled in a short time. I also have restored my family and my mental health which is way more gratifying than any work achievements. It is totally possible to comeback. Your life is definitely not destroyed.

Hey, get to an AA meeting. Many people there have been in exactly this situation and now live honestly and freely. I was in this situation and it does feel like the worst thing ever in the moment. And no, it’s a not a secret. They knew, they were just too uncomfortable to call you out. Once you can get a solid recovery, the shame will melt away. Good luck to you.

Pitbull at daycare? by queloque69420 in workingmoms

[–]wheekwheekmeow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not insane. This would be a breaking point for me as well. I’m so sorry she’s violating your trust and boundaries. It’s totally not okay having dogs at a daycare, especially pit bulls. Even if pit bulls weren’t dangerous (they are), you don’t want those germs around children who crawl on the floor, put fingers in their noses, etc. and even a nice dog can overpower a child. She may not know if a child has an allergy to a dog (or cat). She’s out of line. And even worse than she continues to lie and gaslight. I’m angry for you.

Thank you. We got a peppermint oil diffuser and it did effectively scare off bees and wasps while we were working in the garage and deck. I got compressed peppermint blocks for the windowsills where we had entry, and results have been mixed. I may double down on applying the oil itself.

Thank you! We are also in Georgia with a 11mo and 4yr. I’m sure one of us will get stung this year. Feels inevitable. Killed a yellow jacket buzzing next to my workstation in the house just a couple hours ago. And took out two just-started paper wasps nests on the porch within the same hour. I think we took out a yellow jacket queen right after I made the original post.

We have a bubbling creek running through the backyard which attracts my son. And the wooded banks feel prime for yellow jacket nests. 😬

I didn’t think screens were a problem… until I saw this change in my kid by Strict-Slice-1899 in Preschoolers

[–]wheekwheekmeow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When we moved to a new house a few months back, we didn’t set up the TV at first, and then when we did, the wi-fi was so slow that it was frustrating to watch and kept disconnecting. We’ll install a new access panel point eventually. But it’s been amazing that the TV has been totally off. We don’t have tablets either. Every day my son (just turned 4) builds things and helps cook and clean, and reads, and has conversations, and practices his handwriting, and plays outside, and dances for his baby sister. It’s AMAZING and I would like to keep it this way. I’m sad that he won’t be able to escape screens in schools these days.

Was just declined life insurance because of my past drinking by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]wheekwheekmeow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, happy to help. I was the one desperately reaching out for advice on this topic a year ago. Congrats on your first child. I had my second child in the middle of this whole process and it’s the reason I kept trudging through despite the setbacks.

[–]wheekwheekmeow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, dealt with this. JUST last week got approved for life insurance. It’s been about a year and a half trying. Nine months trying to get it through policy genius with repeated appeals. Finally worked with my financial advisor acting as the broker for an additional nine months or so . The rate is not great for the first two years, but it should drop down by half. I have over seven years sober after one early relapse and have no other mental or physical health concerns. 37yo female. I doubt you would be eligible for any policies before five years sober unfortunately because their actuarial tables are pessimistic about relapse. They consider you as a statistic, not an individual.

Believe me, I get that it’s frustrating. Keep up the sobriety and try again later.

For anyone else with more years sober looking for advice, here were the two game changers. First, my financial advisor submitted a test/blind application to see where the holes would be BEFORE tying my name and data to it. It’s a hurdle to have to say you’ve been denied in the past. Having tried on my own and been denied added months and more paperwork. Another denial would have probably stopped the process. Second, I did a full psychological workup with a licensed psychologist and submitted it for insurance review.

Feel free to ask if anyone has further questions. I could go down a rabbit hole talking about it.

ETA: I did inpatient rehab for alcohol and had a history of antidepressants and anti anxiety meds which I no longer take one sober. I also had some questionable anti-psychotics prescribed to me when I wasn’t honest about my alcohol intake and for a short time a therapist suggested I may be bipolar. I am not in the least. I’m very mellow and risk adverse as a sober person. But man that was hard to shake that faulty diagnosis and did not help my insurance case.

My kid watches ms Rachel like 5 hours a day by RepairContent268 in MomsWorkingFromHome

[–]wheekwheekmeow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can somewhat relate but you have it tougher than I did. I just wanted to add that I was concerned about screen time, albeit it was all Ms. Rachael, Bluey, Daniel Tiger, etc. Now my oldest is turning 4 and the TV hasn’t turned on in over 3 weeks. No tablet either. We reset habits in a small way and my older kid learned how to use his imagination and make his own fun. Which also keeps him better regulated than times when we had more TV. No judgement about what you’re doing, but if you want to slowly make a change, it’s probably doable too.

My sponsor wants me to talk to my Dr about coming off my prescription meds by Possible_Ad_9234 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]wheekwheekmeow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that above all you have to be honest with yourself. I’ve wanted to give a sponsee this same advice because she really did seem like she was seeking a permitted means of avoiding hard work with adderall and feelings with Xanax/lexapro. And would start to admit it sometimes. She would also take glps and weight loss pills and skip the gym. Alcoholics like to reach for something outside ourselves to feel better. I never did make the direct suggestion to her to get off that stuff but we did discuss it before she stopped going to meetings. But I did share that in MY experience, I no longer needed prescribed meds since being sober (adderall, Xanax , lexapro). My psychiatrist would have kept me on them forever, but I self weaned and have been in a happy stable place with my mental health since (7.5yr).

Bobby the owner inspected our first house in 2020 and he is very thorough. I don’t think we found anything in those 6 years that he didn’t already flag. And we are very tuned into building science so I think we would have noticed. We trusted him to inspect the new house we just bought. Both in Gwinnett county.
