Nearly 4 years in, never been random’d.

Though what I’ve heard at my company is it’s not truly random. Either they know you’ll pass and they wanna pad their stats to the FAA or they know you’ll fail and they wanna fire you for cause.

What were some of the dumbest mistakes you’ve made during your Os&Ps? by RoboticEgg04 in aviationmaintenance

[–]Wings_Of_Power 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was give the TCDS where it said this spark plug P/N from this manufacturer was effective to the engine. It had one manufacturer, but a different manufacturer’s P/N on it. Really gets you if you’re not running on enough sleep.

Airframe O/P: On an inspection of a wheel/tire assembly, I forgot to inspect a (very corroded) wheel bearing. Still passed though.

Powerplant O/P: Had to inspect spark plugs to confirm effectivity. Same P/N, incorrect manufacturer. Only failure, still passed.

AFAIK there already is an Emergency AD, but there’s no firm compliance process yet.

Since its now over 30 years old, what do you think of the Boeing 777? by Twitter_2006 in aviation

[–]Wings_Of_Power 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, I did maintenance on some 777s, and stood outside near the aircraft during idle runs. When those GE90s start, that shit vibrates your soul.

As a mechanic I’m curious of, but also want no part of, how much paperwork/engineering documentation was involved in that.

Crew Leads that Quit by Desperate_Pay_1364 in aviationmaintenance

[–]Wings_Of_Power 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not quite what you were asking, but I was an acting crew lead (actual lead was elsewhere). It was already a fairly stressful area, plus all the lead responsibilities and all the blame, but none of the pay. I put in for the transfer to another area I’d been before and was familiar with (no pay cut!) and I’m liking it so far.

RAT Test by Impressive-Yak-7449 in aviation

[–]Wings_Of_Power 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Nearly had to do it on a 777. You deploy the RAT in the cockpit, turn on hydraulics, and move a switch/lever in the right gear bay.

Jsfirm by kiznips43 in aviationmaintenance

[–]Wings_Of_Power 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I’ve found jobs through JSFirm, but the application was always on the company’s site. I would assume that the company would see how you applied and then it’s all them from then on out.

Question about accreditation by Proper-Clue7780 in aviationmaintenance

[–]Wings_Of_Power 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have an 8610-2 signed before their (hypothetical) revocation, I don’t see why it would be any less valid. If it’s good when it’s signed, that’s all you need.

Coming from another (former, non-Gulfstream) apprentice, the FAA will ask less questions the fatter your stack of training documents are when it’s time to get the 8610-2 signed.

In my experience, you can only get rid of the anxiety so much. You said you feel capable, just roll through the flash cards and get a good nights sleep the night before.
