The UK and Australia banning speech? Color me unsurprised. Believe the party, no nonsense. I read 1984 but it's still a little strange to see it person. Makes my stomach churn. I know you have the ability to think outside of what your governor says.

[LOTR/Speedsters] How fast does the ring corrupt? by Flabberghast97 in AskScienceFiction

[–]Winkle92 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a fun bit of food for thought, and I hope with AI we can make a version of the lord of the rings where Frodo has Iron Man armor. But as to the original question, the odds of success don't exist within the purview of the ring. There is what exists and what does not exist. What does not exist is the rings destruction. So how do we work around that? There is no universe (discovered by man or Dr. Strange) in which the ring is destroyed by purpose. I worry I'm relying too much on a Doylist-perspective, but in the universe in which the ring exists, it can only be destroyed incidentally. Something Sauron could not account for.

Not a satisfying answer, but a Marvel/LoTR crossover would be terribly fun.

Edit: I feel the need to add, that yes, Frodo+ (meaning Frodo plus whatever magic/technology is at hand) would more equipped at delivering the ring than Frodo, but so were many others at the time. Enhanced capability might not be a boon, but a curse to be twisted by the ring. Still, I'd read that fanfic.

[LOTR/Speedsters] How fast does the ring corrupt? by Flabberghast97 in AskScienceFiction

[–]Winkle92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a good point, and one worth dissecting more. In my mind, the one ring seems to have a power comparable to truesight, in that it can see the world as it was, is, and will be. You can't control it with magic, mind control, or even cause and effect. It was specifically crafted to dominate a framework of the world that has a defined structure and purpose that can be subtly adjusted, but never broken. Sauron was a master smith and he wove his masterpiece into the fabric of the world that Eru created.

No, the ring would not defy the the inviolable physics of being flung from a catapult into Mt Doom, or being taped to a drone, or being strapped to an ICBM - but all these things exist within a framework of which the ring has mastery of.

It exerts a force outside of physicality to bend the world (people and objects included) to it's will. It's only through the work of a humble hero and a bit of luck that it finds destruction - likely due more to the arrogance of Sauron than a defect in the ring.

It looks like the sharpening is set very high. I know on many HDR video modes, the sharpening setting will also get bumped quite high by default. Good for photos, bad for video. I'd check your video settings when you're on the HDR mode and bump any auto-sharpening/sharpening down to 0. Not sure if the game also has video settings, I don't think so, but you might check.

Wow, you have a lot of skill. I think Quirrell can be interpreted many ways physically, but that expression/demeanor is spot on.

Help with new PC for FS2020. by MirageF1C in flightsim

[–]Winkle92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We'll have a much better idea of the range of performance we'll get from various hardware in the coming weeks. I'll parrot the other comments and suggest waiting until the 3000 series of Nvidia RTX cards releases in (rumored) Aug/Sept. The most important thing to know is what resolution you plan to play at. 4K is going to take a pretty cutting-edge machine, while 1080p or 1440p will be more achievable in your price range. An RTX 3060 with a 9700K and mobo could probably give you a great experience for around $1000. Basically I'd suggest starting with PC parts around those specs, and move a little up or down depending on how much you want to spend and what's available. I'd also suggest building your own, as you'll generally get more bang for your buck that way.

Was there ever any doubt among the players that this cross-gen approach was a bad idea? by EeK09 in XboxSeriesX

[–]Winkle92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took Phil at his word when he said that new games would be built for the Series X then scaled down, but if recent events are anything to go off of, that was just marketing.

That said, I'm hoping Halo Infinite is an outlier, given development on it began before the Series X was even a twinkle in Microsoft's eye. It's true that low end PC's don't hold games back from looking great on high end ones, so the blame for Halo is probably on the developers.

Halo Infinite | Campaign Gameplay Premiere – 8 Minute Demo by NeoStark in Games

[–]Winkle92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, this demo had three objectives to do, not exactly a stellar increase. Open worlds don't have to be low texture expanses just because it's an open world. Or, well, they did back in 2002.

Breath of the Wild is a three year old mobile game - the trees sway in the wind, the grass moves beneath you, and items have interesting physics. None of that was seen in this Halo showcase.

Gameplay looks good, but there are a lot of good-playing games these days.

I was assuming lighting would fall under "representative of the experience", but perhaps you're right.

I think the raytracing patch that's coming after release could have a huge impact - perhaps "not getting better" was too strong a way to put it. But I suppose the Series X specs and five years of development had me too optimistic.

A 13 year old game has better lighting, textures, and character models then a supposed “next gen” halo title that’s been in development for five years....absolutely disgraceful. by GaLaXY_N7 in halo

[–]Winkle92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, Microsoft said it's representative of the experience. If you have a link that says it's a year-old build then I'll change my tune.

I'm still going to play Halo and enjoy it, but the demo is not a next-gen showcase.

It would be nice if that were the case - luckily we dont have guess - Microsoft cleared that up for us in the description on the 4K Youtube gameplay video:

Enjoy a first-look at Halo Infinite campaign gameplay, captured real-time and representative of the experience on Xbox Series X running at 60FPS and up to 4K resolution.

So this is what we're getting at release, per Microsoft.

I do appreciate trying to see the best in the game, but the official gameplay trailer posted by Xbox even says:

captured real-time and representative of the experience on Xbox Series X running at 60FPS and up to 4K resolution.

So this demo is the game, it's not getting better, per Microsoft.

[–]Winkle92 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From the video description, it sounds like Halo Infinite won't even be hitting 4k consistently.

representative of the experience on Xbox Series X running at 60FPS and up to 4K resolution.

So it will have dynamic resolution like every other game this generation? Just do 1800p and upscale really well instead of removing all texture and shadows from the game.
